1. I've tried the BA200 version and it does indeed have 'that' tone. The problem is there isn't very much of it - it is not very loud at all, as in not much better than a decent practice amp. I am guessing this is the issue with the SS from Ampeg? Although the 300 (and 600) has a valve in the pre-amp, so maybe this can improve things somewhat?
2. What a difference a day makes! Went back today, loved the Ampeg tone after having a play with it in a side room, it was the tone I carry around with me in my head. Couldn't get the Ashdown to give any clarity, the notes just got lost in the general sound. I wonder if it was because I was in a smallish (10' X 10') room so it has no space to breathe?
3.
How did you find them different ? Am intrigued to see how other people interpret the differences .
I do a lot with PA's etc. so I like to think I have fairly good ears (even though this is all subjective). Basically the Ashdown gave me the sounds and tone that made me smile. The Ampeg sounded very dead and lifeless to me (I'm sure the SVT stuff is truly awesome but this combo just didint float my boat at all) and the trace sounded too much like it wanted to be a guitar amp (very toppy as though the horn or tweeter - whichever it is - wanted to take over events too soon). The Ashdown gave me that lovely gutteral punching popping sound that I want when I think 'amped up Precision'. I am gonna go and give them another go this afternoon before I sign up for one (this is something I always do as what sounds good one day, may seem awful the next).
4. I know there is the manchesterguitartech, but I think that's quite steep. So where can I get the stuff from, particularly black and clear. In tins is fine as my bro sprays for a living, so he will apply it. TIA.
5. For Frankie Vallis 'The Night' - please note that this is not 'Oh what a night' also by him. I want to learn it, and am not able to figure it out myself, any help would be most appreciated. TIA
6. Popped into my local SC tonight to see what they got. Tried an ABM Ashdown Combo (2 X 10), an Ampeg Combo (2 X 10) and a Trace Combo (2 X 10) To my ears using my fingers and using a precision the Ashdown was miles ahead of the others and looked cool too. And I had got my heart set on the 'Ampeg' sound as well. I'm gonna go back tomorrow and have another go before I make my mind up.
7. I must admit fellas the Ashdowns do lok the bo!!ox to me but I am pretty sure that Ampeg seem to typify the tone that I carry around in my head. And yes, I do intend to try before I buy, just a shame the local SC has so little bass stock in. Thanks for the replies (I'm still tempted by a portable head and to build my own cabinets).
8. Cort Curbow, lighter than my telecaster, lovely neck.
9. OK, so the boys at SC have 2 years 0% APR on this week, and it's just too good an offer not to look into. What rig, up to say £600 would you pick from their range? I'm a precision kind of guy and like the Classic British Tone kind of thing. I'd also like it to be (one fat) man portable please. TIA
10. Right, I had a friend bring me the titled bass and announce it's 'broken' but that he had tried to fix it but its still broken. Oh God, this is gonna be bad methinks. So I open it up, and aside from 2 of the wires being broken to the jackplug and the other hangng on by the skin of it's teeth it looks OK. So battery out, replace the duff wiring put it back together and nada, it's dead. Nothing else seems amiss, and yes I did get the wires the right way around. So is it possible that the little potted block and the circuitry therein is dead? If so how do I check, and where can I get a replacement from. He has 2 big gigs coming up so any help would be greatly appreciated. TIA.
11. Basically it's one of these: http://www.tanglewoodguitars.co.uk/product...mp;sID=26465238 But has had the sh!t knocked out of it. In fairness it isn't that bad, just got dings and scratches all over it. I'll try and sort some pics out soon.
12. It's not so much damage more hard use and careless handling (I would not even consider calling it mojo).
13. Red dunlop ones.
14. to even out the volume levels when I play? Sometimes notes (and in particular the open strings) really thunder out when I play far above the rest of my runmblings. Whilst I do want to retain some elements of dynamic expression when I wish, I would like to be able to even things out a bit. So would it help? TIA.
15. A Tanglewood Rebel XT. It's in wine red, is not in particularly good condition but does have fairly new strings on it. It was my first bass, got it as a fixer upper (a pot had disintigrated as had the strings). It's missing a nob (ooh-err) has a fair few war wounds but plays fine. I'd deffo class it as a beater bass, or a project if you are bored. Only reason I don't use it anymore is that it's 35" scale and I find it uncomfy. Currently it has little stickers on it for every note on the fretboard upto the 12th fret (well we all have to learn somehow lol). These can be removed if you wish I know pictures are needed but I can osrt that later, just want to know a ball park figure. TIA
16. Has your friend been sterilised in the interests of evolution? Just kidding
17. I can only play comfortably at any kind of speed with a pick. I get all clumsy using just my pigs t!ts, erm, I mean fingers. I am working on it though
18. Xmas got in the way, I haven't been on here since Xmas Eve. Did a bit of work on the neck (800 grit to get it how I want it), will get my bro to finish the body soon (he sprays cars for a living). Tempted to upgrade the hardware prior to the build but will probably shove the kit stuff in and see how it goes. I want to oil finish the neck but also want to fit a decal, I am usure if this is doable - any ideas?
19. Is that part of the original Death Star model from Star Wars in the recess on the back of your bass?
20. Front of House. What the audience hear. Better to be foolish for a moment than ignorant for a lifetime.
21.
Cheddatom, How did the gig go? - I couldn't make it as I was gigging in Cheadle on friday......... maybe next time mate. How's it going with you Harry? Mart
Pretty good thanks, been so busy with band related projects I havent even picked my bass up for a few weeks Hows u?
22. That's what some of it sounded like to my old ears, and it was the closest analogy I could make. To be fair, I don't listen to many modern bands so there may be somebody with a closer sound and feel, I just haven't heard them.
23. Bump for an answer please so I can get cracking
24. Thanks bud. If I oil the neck, can I still apply decals to the headstock? If so do I oil first or after or both (in relation to applying the decal)? Also whats a good way to seal the body do that it can be painted with car body paints? TIA
25. Sorry bud, too close to Xmas, I am decked out with other band related stuff. Hope you had a good 'un though.
