Bloody hell theres more than i realsied in this budget range. A good mate asked me to find him a Bass for that cash & i am looking to upgrade as well. simular budget but i always say set a budget & then stretch it to the best you can lol I am more looking for something with deep tone that i can then make nice & clanky (Fender Jazz sounding) for the funky bass lines, to be honest i'm more into what a bass sounds like than looks (Although there are exceptions). My mate on the other hand is looking for a easy Bass to play, so i guess a thin neck & light body. I'm not that fussed as long as i sounds nice & i wont be looking to change anytime soon then i would be happy Again people thanks for advice & pointers, it's really appreciated. I'll e-mail me mate see what he wants to do & start budgiting for my own purchase.
I'm about to sell a virtually as new Cort Curbow, in a very nice (cause they vary a lot) Mystic Ice Crazer finish, very light, very slim fast neck, great variety of sounds (It's active) and it's had a pro setup (frets levelled etc.) and Elixir strings fitted. I'm selling it because I have switched to short scale basses only. Yours (or your mates) for £200 - that's a bit of a bargain.

An old Westone Thunder, end of story, and you'll get a good one with money to spare.
OOoh oooh, I'm the first! You're a WIZARD Harry
It's been said But remember there's more to it than pups alone, bridge, woods, strings etc all play a role, although a pup change is probably the biggest change you can make to your sound, perhaps after strings.
Excellent I think the bass world needs more Mike Watts I wonder if his bass turned up after it was stolen ? Now this to me is bass porn !!!! forget you fancy woods and multi - laminates Just looks so good......and you don't need to polish it....
Hand on heart I don't have it That too is my kind of bass, while I love graded wood (you should see some of the gun stocks I have) I'd much rather have a bass that was beaten to hell but plays like a dream and sounds even better.

Santa got me an Epiphone EB-0 which now has the thumping tractor of a pup you sold me in it (and yes you were right about it subtelty or lack of). I've managed to get a go of a few shorties as well since then and I like them all, far more satisfying for me to play than full scale basses. First rule of any serious project - 'it will always take twice as long as you first thought to do it properly' Amen. I look forward to reading your updates, and trying one of them out would be a pleasure I can even dump the missus off with some relatives in town Win win
Under the distance selling regulations you can ask for a refund irrespective of the reason for up to 14 days after purchase and just stand the cost of sending it back to them and put it down to experience, its a good lesson. The best secondhand basses by far are Yamaha's and my personal favorite Westone Thunders which can be had for £120.00 You get a quality well made , sonically good bass that will last years. Search the threads and you will find lots of good recommendations.
What Paul said, both legally and bass wise I can wholly recommend. The Westone thunders are probably the most underated basses there are right now, grab one before people cotton on.

I'm still looking ... Basswise at least. G****r wise it's my Patrick Eggle Berlin that cost me £300 new in the early 90's - I'm being buried with that thing, I guess I'm after it's bass equivalent.
-
A Cort Curbow springs to mind, an unusual fairly high end design in a low end package. I have one (although its in retirement now due to me going over to the shorties side) and it's great, skinny at the nut and very, very, very light.

Sound clips would be wonderful if possible, I'm sure that others on here would be interested as well (scale length excepted). At the moment I am 'living' with the bridge, it's not wonderful but it works (just), for me it's just the neck on this little beasty that's so comfy and keeps me coming back. In fact, as a bass to play it's just so comfy and they are so rarely seen compared to Fendery type of instruments.
+1 for the DiMarzio Model One, I have one in my EB-3
Using just the neck pup, how would you describe the tone please? The standard pup on an EB-0 is just like it says on the tin, muddy the main prob is there are so many mids it's not easy to tell the difference between an open E and an E played on the D string Ideally the Pup I'm after would lose some of the mids and gain a bit more articulation but keep the rumbling lows and gain a bit more in the way of dynamics. Ideally But right now I'd settle for not being microphonic.
-
Yeah, thought about one of them, til I saw the price :S On a gibson, maybe, but not for an Epi, thanks for the response though
-
I noticed today just how microphonic the pup is on this bass (and how weedy output voltage wise). Basically it needs replacing - the bass is great, pup aside. So does anybody have any ideas for a drop in replacement? Electronics and soldering etc. I am good at, I just don't fancy cutting wood. I've contacted Brandoni to see if they have anything and Andy at Wizard to see if he is able to help. Best price I can get a Dimarzio model one for is about £75 from Thomman. So what do you guys know / think. TIA

Hi Paul, hows the project going? Thanks to Santa I'm now a total convert to Shorties (your old Westone is now in Semi retirement). There is definately a gap in the market for mid-lower price basses, after the beginners sub £150 stuff the next thing is the £4-600 Mustang (as far as I'm aware). My shortie wish list would be something like the below: A comfy, fast playing neck. Make sure it's not made out of balsa wood (nor Agathis - 'shudders') - some half decent tone wood please, although I'm not expecting swamp ash etc. Decent bridge, tuners and a truss rod that works (that is not made from monkey metal and designed to take an allen key measured in cubits so that it will adjust properly). Decent strap buttons (a case of not overlooking the basic essentials). Standard size pups & pots etc. so if I do wanna change 'em I'm not limited by choice and if there's space make sure the pots cavity is big enough for the modders to bang in some active electronics if they want to. In fact, standard size components across the board is a very good idea, it's partly (IMO) why SX's are so well liked - a good product that can be made great with a good choice of off the shelf mods (although if you get the hardware good enough changing it won't be necessary - like Squiers VM's the hardware is good enough that it doesn't need chaning even if you're usually so inclined). If you can make it have a half decent tone out of the box - especially on the E string (acoustically - to me at least - they just sound 'wrong' even though they're fine when plugged in) then that would be great. I'd offer to try one out (I probably am your target market) but I don't think I'm a good enough bassist to help even though by day I am a Senior Design Engineer so the feedback would (hopefully) be fairly intelligent. A shame really as I could even come and fetch it :S These are all just my ramblings and my opinions, hopefully it could restart a bit of brainstorming.

Thanks guys, looks like the real world has caught me up this time and I'm gonna have to wait til the next pay day before I can make a purchase :S

I went with rotosound 88's and used it in anger today - my got it's got some bass to it very different voicing to a P etc. May end up looking at a PUP change if I end up being unhappy with the definition.
-
Good headphoes I got, I still use my old Senheiser Ovations that I bought in about '96, and they cost a fortune back then. However it's looking like the Microcube RX - They're £100 at stagebeat right now - that's almost too good to miss.
-
I'm basically after something that will let me widdle away to my hearts content in the bedroom (as long as the boss aint sleeping at the time ). Initial thoughts are some kind of practice amp - Roland Microbass RX thingy or maybe something similar - I don't want the strangulated fart you get from the normal 8" practice amps and to be fair they're probably too loud (its a small house). Another option is something like the Behringer V-Amp Pro through headphones - but to do this it needs to be fairly loud - I currently use a Zoom 607 and the output through headphones is basically inadequate for my needs. So it needs to be small and packable awayable and have a fairly decent tone so I'm not cringing as I play and be loud enough to hear over the regular instrument sounds (I play fairly hard). And it will never ever be used elsewhere - I have my ABM stuff for that. Budget, lets say Microbass RX max - £130. Cheers.

I never thought that anybody thought I played Jazz, I just don't slap or do jazzy things blah blah bah I've ordered some of the rotos, I noticed they were thicker than usual and I have no issues with truss rod adjustment (I'm unhappy with how slack the truss rod felt to get the right amount of neck relief with the standard strings). Also if they sit a little higher in the nut it should help to confirm my feelings that the nut has been cut too low. I also have very strong (just not very flexible) fingers so hopefully it should cancel out in my case, thanks for the caveat though.

Thanks guys, I am very much a rock player, no jazz stuff from me I'm afraid
