1. The OP is amazing, I can't see anyone topping that.
2. Hmmmm, it's interesting. I can listen to and appreciate the talent that's gone into all sorts of music, but I wouldn't say I can enjoy listening to all music
3. If you actually like listening to all music, doesn't that mean you have no opinions on music?
4.
I used to play in a rock covers band whose guitarist/singer had never heard "Alive" by Pearl Jam. He's in his late 30's.
Lucky bastard! I'd give anything for that musical blind spot
5. There's loads of classical music I've not heard, I'd like to get through that at some point. In terms of pop, I've made myself blind to a lot of it. I just can't stand anything that doesn't really grab me quickly. There are also bands I've neglected because I find their singer's voice annoying to listen to. Maybe I'm too fussy but I've not run out of new music to listen to yet
6.
Maybe, however I don't believe your story about these young bands. Blue
I run a recording studio and have recorded them. Here's one band who talked about the beatles a lot https://www.facebook.com/TheAlbionOfficial/?fref=ts So there's proof that I'm not a liar. The first time I've had to do that on Basschat. Do you ever wonder why people accuse you of trolling?
7.
I know what and how the younger generation feels about The Beatles
A bunch of the young (16-20) bands local to me are really into the beatles and borrowing lots from them in their song writing. So, maybe you don't know what you're talking about?
8.
...one of the reasons your generation will never generate the amount of great musical artists as mine.
How do you know everyone's age? I'm 31, so I've no idea whether I'm included in that bracket or not, but I'm still wound up by your post. There are many reasons why lots of attention was focussed on a small number of songwriters in "your day", compared with a greater/thinner spread of attention over more songwriters today. What is certain is that there is still original music being written, music is still evolving, and people are still finding new kinds of music to enjoy. With the greatest of respect to "the greats" (not that they'd care), I'm so f***ing glad we're not all stuck in the 60s, and I'm certain that most of them would agree.
9. "What year car do you drive" - Seriously?!
10.
Nope, not kidding... the vast majority (drummers) are muscially conversant and know how to compile muscial tracks as per a brief.. Most deps show up with parts written out.
I wonder if this is a fact based on evidence, or an opinion based on your personal experiences?
11. There are loads of 15 Ltr plastic and metal bins, so just wondered if that was a cheap and easy option
12. The weird originals band I mentioned have supported covers bands twice, to crowds of over 100 people, and won them over with our freaky image and heavy instrumental music. These crowds were expecting metal covers, so not your average pub crowd, but I think it does prove that people are open to something different, even if they've come to see something they know.
13. I learned a load of theory when I was younger but I can't really remember much of it now. Having said that, if someone says "F" I know where it is on the fretboard, which is very useful. Maybe stick some dots on the fretboard? I realise it'd feel a bit silly given you're so technically proficient to go back to "beginner dots", but you really should be able to locate a note on the board after someone calls it out. Once you've figured that out, you should start to notice which notes from your "shapes" are the root notes, and then you'll be able to play in any key You've learned all the hard stuff, it's just anchoring that to the right position you need to do now I agree a teacher would be the best bet but it's not always possible
14. a stupid idea no doubt, but the "15 litre" number is very round... Does it have to be square and made of wood? Or could I buy a 15 litre bin, cut a hole in for the speaker, and another for the port? IE Is the shape as important as the volume?
15. My most recent project is a mostly instrumental rock band. It's crazy music with a crazier image. I honestly never thought we'd win over any audiences as it's all so weird, but it's been very successful so far! So, you never know what's going to go down well I wonder what causes some of these threads to turn into an "originals vs covers" battle? I play in 4 originals bands but I really don't care what anyone else does. As far as I'm concerned, once the song is written, we're all the same, out there playing to audience, trying to win them over
By the way my 70s style rock & blues band has released 2 CD s of all original material.
I'm really surprised by this! Where do we get the CDs?
16. People go on about neck-through basses having more sustain. I have one neck through and two bolt on. When played acoustically, one bolt on bass sounds rubbish, the neck through is better but lacks sustain, and the other bolt on sounds great! I would have thought the manner of construction would have more to do with it than the actual wood. How many pieces the neck is made from, how many holes are in the body etc. It'd be interesting to see a proper scientific study on this
17. Yeh I've played with a couple, then took it up myself. Around here there seem to be a lot of drummers who are great at one particular genre. Some of the guys playing technical metal are just incredible to watch, but for whatever reason I doubt they'd get reggae or funk - could be my own weird prejudices.
18. how do they compare acoustically? My basses all sound different unplugged - not necessarily due to the woods, but still
19.
If they're aware of the risks & are still refusing to wear hearing protection then they are responsible for any damage to their hearing.
Well, I've tried to explain, but they're all 15 years older than me and have stories about putting their heads in the bass bins at motorhead gigs etc. which is obviously "rock n roll"
20. If I'm playing drums in a medium sized pub, there won't be any mics on the kit. In order for the snare to have the necessary impact at the back of the room (relative to the volume of the rest of the band), I will play it moderately loud, and to do this without damaging my hearing, I wear ear plugs. I get frustrated with the rest of the band who refuse to wear earplugs as I worry that I'll do them damage
21. wonderful work!
22. Some vicious pedantry in here :-D
23.
... My point "I don't like it", what's it really worth?
I think that's a great approach, and it's one I use when I'm recording other people's music, or playing it for them When it comes to listening to music, there's some stuff I really can't tolerate. The cheesiest easy listening pop, for example. It makes me angry. I can't even have it on in the background! I think having strong preferences is probably what drives my writing, and my creativity in general. I imagine that most of your favourite artists would "hate" some music.
24. From the OP, it sounds like if you had a good graphic EQ you could get the sound you like from the barefaced, and it'd go louder. That's just how it read to me - I've not tried either brands
25.
Funky R and B
OK, yeh, that's ace! Very funky
