What if I use a Sansamp and plug it into the FX return on an Ampeg? Does it sound like a Sansamp or an Ampeg? Like I say, I agree that a certain range of tones are available from different amps, and from amp to amp this range can differ in width. However, you still think you'll be able to tell if an amp is an ampeg or not without looking, and that's rediculous, clearly, as each Ampeg has a range of tones available, and other amps cover some of this range in their range (if you know what I mean). Yes, there is an "ampeg sound", yes, they have a tonal character to them (which Ampeg you're talking about god knows, there are a few different models!!) and yes you could say "wow, that's the ampeg sound" or "they have nailed the classic Ampeg tone". However, to say that the ONLY way of getting a tone within the range available from a given Ampeg amp is to use that specific amp, it's just crazy. There are so many different amps out there with so many options and settings and such wide ranges of tones available, not to mention all of the computer modelling etc. Oh yeh, and about the Ampeg SVX VST plug-in - Have you tried it? Have you tried it with some great headphones? Have you tried it on a great computer with a great soundcard running into a poweramp running into an 8 x 10"? I went into Magic Garden studios who do a lot of pro work, and he has an Ampeh head which he's not touched since buying the SVX plug-in.

You're saying you can recognise them all as Ampeg? And can you pick out the individual models? Why not? They're very different sounding! One day you'll be outside a gig and decide that your expert ears can tell it's an ampeg inside. Then when you get inside it'll be a POD XT or a Marshall VBA or a DHA head or a Zoom B2.1U going straight into the PA. Just because a sound is distinctive doesn't mean it can't be created by anything else. You're implying that nothing can create "that Ampeg tone" other than an Ampeg. Clearly Ampeg SVX VST Plug-in sh*ts on that claim.

Incidentally, some people will be able to convince themselves of their ability to recognise a specific brand just because of the sheer popularity IE I bet that guitarist's using a marshall, just from hearing it. Well what do you know, you're right! Except you were always "odds on".
  9. It's obvious that amps sound different and have an individual "character". Some amps are more flexible than others. I would generally regard an Ampeg as not very flexible. I think this is due to the sort of "character" built into the pre-amp. It's true that you can use the settings on your bass, on the amp, and varying your playing style to acheive similar tones from one amp to the next. What's clearly not true is that you can get any sound from any amp. Especially if you're relying on the pre-amp. Alex - What if nick oliveri asked you to get his distorted valve-driven sound out of my peavey combo? I personally treat my pedalboard as one big very flexible pre-amp, and whatever amp i'm using as a PA. This way I can extremely close to the exact same tone out of a wide variety of rigs.

  11. I think I could get a good bass sound out of almost any amp, as long as I had some pedals with me. Since my Laney head blew up about 8 years ago, i've used a Peavey TNT combo with a BW 15" and I love it. Adding a guitar amp using the bi-amp feature really sets it off. I bought it for £150 or something, and I bought a 1 x 12" guitar amp for £50. I did upgrade the guitar amp later, but only because the opportunity came up. It was an amazing sounding rig for £200. Incidentally, I had to give the upgraded guitar amp back, and the old 1 x 12" is broken, so I bought a 2 x 10" Behringer extension cab from someone off here. Obviously it's not bi-amped so it's having a very different effect, but the amount of extra low end produced by the behringer cab is amazing! I was very shocked. I'm convinced that I'll only ever buy bargains from now on.
  12. For a few interesting wahs, a great chorus, an expression pedal, patch saving and foot-switched patch-switching PLUS pitch-shifting, get the Digitech XP-100!! Or you could get a Zoom B2.1U. Or you could tell us you've got a £300 budget and we'll recommend a filter a wah and a chorus for £100 each.

  16. It seems to me you need to figure out if you can compromise and hopefully get along with the complainant. Writing a very sensitively worded letter regarding the complaint and posting it through all of your neighbours doors is a good idea.

  22. You could cut the end of a stereo cable off and add on a mono jack and a DC jack. The DC jack could drive a daisy chain. It would depend on the amount of current the amp can supply as to how many pedals you can run off it.
  23. TC electronic controller or G system or whatever it's called. Or it could just be a midi foot-controller. To the right of that is a white boss pedal but you can't tell what it is.
