  1. Can anyone advise me if there are any commercially available 12” drivers with a performance comparable to those used in BAREFACED enclosures, for home-build?

I am assuming the BAREFACED type drivers are superior to the EMINENCE DELTALITEs specified for the GREENBOY builds.

If I am wrong about this, or there is any advice on high performance hi power enclosures and drivers, I would be grateful to hear from anyone with experience in this quest.

  2. I have made a very extensive search for this item, it is the cream rubber grommet for the toggle of an Ibanez RS924. It is not available from Ibanez and secondhand ones are likely to be perished.

I do not have a photo but the above reference should pull up an internet image.

  3. Hi;

Is there anybody out there in the US of A able to help me ?

I am a retired UK bassist living in France on a meager UK pension, (AHhhhhhhh...........)

I am in need of a spare part (rubber toggle switch grommet) for a renovation project .

I have trawled the net and only found one source of supply, great! Not particularly cheap (7.50$) not so great; Postage 13.50$ Terrible !!!

The supplier says he cannot ship any cheaper, but I have just received two sets of bass strings from USA for 8.00$, (the grommet only weighs about 5grammes.)

So, question is, is there anybody in US I can have this grommet mailed to who is prepared to forward it by the cheapest letter post ?

I know I ought to be posting on the oppositions site, but I am  a staunch supporter of BC !!

Any proposals gratefully received and any reciprocal favors can be discussed.

    Happy new Year

But how many differences are there between these two basses other than their weight?

This is why the question IMO is mostly meaningless.

The heaviest bass I have owned (Yamaha) sounded good, but I own lighter basses that I think sound better. The lightest bass I have owned (Lightwave) sounded great but I suspect that was down almost entirely to the pickup and electronics than anything to do with the weight. Also there is very little point in comparing the two as about the only things they had in common was that they were mostly made out of wood.

Do both basses have identical neck construction?

Given that the neck is much less stiff than the body, it has a much bigger potential influence over the sound.

Yes , You are both correct, the two basses have nothing in common, apart from being dead trees.

I  go with the consensus, weight is not a requirement for good tone, whatever that tone may subjectively be deemed to be by anyone.

I can let the boat anchor go and drift into the the sea of light ( as in "NOT HEAVY')

Thank you all for your observations

  5. I find all these views of my initial post interesting. The reason I posted in the first place is that I have a 3.6kg and a 4.9kg bass. I love 'em both, I eq them for "my tone", they are great....however they are different, niether can emulate the other. I accept that there are all the usual variables at play, but the heavy one seems to have a more focused, fundamental "presence" in all registers. But this is most noticeable when I switch instruments, after a minute or so the notes played become more important than the tone.

So, those of you who traded down in weight, did you A/B the released heavy against the received light weight in a prolonged and meaningful way ?

Please excuse the verbal you-know -what,  got to go now Matron says it's tea time...............................

  6. This has probably been covered many times already, maybe indifferent forums, but what is your experience, tonally, of heavy weight basses.

When I stated playing, 57 years ago, weight was never thought about but now my generation, and the one after, are in the aches and pain zone it seems to be an important parameter when evaluating an instrument ,

    especially for gigging.

I don't know if I am deluding myself but I feel my heavier basses have a better voice.

  7. Hi.

I am being offered a G&L Tribute L2000 carved top 2005. The owner tells me it is limited edition, nitro lacquer, offered in 43mm & 44.5mm nut widths, 1000 produced of each.

I have trawled the net to verify this but have come up with nothing.

Anybody who can shed light on this out there?

I tried the guitarsbyleo site, but it is so complicated to navigate (at least for me) that I gave up !

    So sorry, sir.

Let's play it again: I gave you but too many ideas. Some studio guys have these switch based P-basses with two switches: on/off, tone on/off. That is probably the simplest configuration that exists. It also provides straight line from pickup to board without any pots or tones in between if needed.

Stellartone's solution is close to the all on solution but has more sound options, too. I am pretty confident that you would be happy with it.

If you are not after the very trebly sound, this studio type on/off -thing is probably not yours. Anthony Jackson's Fodera has just the pickup and an output jack. He will have some high end rack effects and a studio mixer after the bass and cable. That's why he doesn't need any cheapo adjustments in his bass.

No need for apologies, just got the wires crossed, which is a very apt euphemism. Why? Because I have the bass all wired up, exactly according to the published Ibanez diagram, working perfectly ok EXCEPT the passive tone and volume are working  anticlockwise.

I assume that reversing the connections to the outer legs of the pots should remedy this ?

If you have this switch, do you need anything else? You could do studio version, i.e. no pots, only switches.

Three position mic switch, tone switch & vol switch (which is also On/Off). Can be done with a multiple position rotary switch, like:

Off - quiet & tone On - loud & tone On - loud & tone Off - quiet & tone Off - Off (6 positions)

    OR

loud & tone On - quiet & tone On - Off - quiet & tone Off - loud & tone Off (5 positions)

Or just one switch for tone and a step attenuator. I have maths for a step attenuator if you want to do quite a few solderings...

    Hi itu.

You've lost me a bit there. What I am hoping to do is use the Tonestyler as the basic tone shaping and then use the passive tone as  "depth" of tone , all as suggested by Stellartone.

The Tonestyler has a bypass setting, so the original wiring (passive tone only) is achievable. What I want it to know if the passive tone is basically "out of circuit" at ten, delivering Tonestyler only, or do I need to switch it out to achieve this. Oh what a tangled web we weave !!!

  10. Thank you all for replies and advice.

The reason I was doing this mod was to enable me to add a Stellartone Tonestyler without having to drill more holes in the body.

I am now considering an alternative circuit by replacing the passive vol. & tone with a dual concentric (which I already have in the correct values).

The Tonestyler works independently from the passive tone and I was wondering if, when the tone pot is fully open, it no longer effects the circuit tonally or in any other way. If yes would a simple switch cutting the hot wire to the vol pot make it invisible to the circuit ?

I was also going to add a treble bleed to the vol pot but am unsure what values of resistor and cap to use. The pickups are P & J with three position toggle, no blend.

    Any comments or advice?

    What are the chances 😊

So there are actually four gangs there - 2x20K and 2x100K.

I guess that you can just use one of each as long as it fits mechanically.

Thank you for the link. I did look but it seems psychically too small, both for the D.Conc. knobs I have and the mounting hole in the body. I know there are ways around this but I am now looking at replacing the passive vol & tone with a d.c. pot. Both are 500k I will have to sacrifice the log/lin parameter but I have a dual 500k log pot which should not be too bad, what do you think people ?

  12. Yes, interesting. The neck pocket should not be a problem because it is the Ibanez Quadralock system, a high-flown way of saying it is fastened on with four machine screws instead of wood screws. For some reason Ibanez decided that because of this the pocket could be .5mm larger than the tang, so easy to repeat. Likewise it will be easy to rout the pickup wells exactly the same as the original, no problem there, but tone wood and neck dive do present unknowns. Neck dive particularly, as the neck has the steel implants under the fingerboard which Ibanez used to take the resonant frequency of the neck out of the lower frequencies to avoid dead spots.

  13. Yes, good idea ! If there are any differences it will be useful data for others. If I go ahead with it I will also record the respective weights, without hardware.

I wonder if anyone could come up with an educated (or uneducated) guess as to what the ball park weight of a PB body in swamp ash might be ?

  14. Hello all.

Firstly I do not know if this is the right forum for this topic, I have put it on Repairs an Technical also.

I have, after fifteen years of trying since my beloved '77 Stingray was stolen, found a bass that could be "the one". Nothing extra-special, just a 1980 Ibanez RS924 in natural finish.

The DiMarzio P & J pickups are fine  in passive mode and the two-band active tone mode allows useful tweaking. However I since added a Stellartone Bass 11 Tonestyler which operates independently from the passive & active tones............result PERFECT (for me at least).

    Now comes 'the insect in the ointment', it weighs about 5kgs. I have a Damian Erskine DuoStrap, which a least spreads the load over both shoulders, but still not easy at my age. So now to the point of this topic. I have been considering having a new swamp ash body made. The current body weighs about 3.25kgs. My main concern is that I might loose the voice that the instrument has at present;

So, any advice, comments or is there anybody out there who has done this body transplant or had experience of neck and hardware on different density bodies?? If yes with what results ?

I will be very grateful for any assistance in coming to a decision

  15. Hello all.

OK, no connection with Frankenstein but hear me out.

Firstly I do not know if this is the right forum, the build forum might be better. I might put it on both.

I look forward to replies..........I am agog. (Eric Clapton was thought to be agog in 1968 I understand)

  16. I am hoping to consolidate two tone pots to a single dual con. pot , but the original values are bass 20K and treble 100K. The only odd value concentric pot I have found so far is a Fender 250/500K version.

Can anyone suggest a solution to the problem or point to a supplier. I have to add that my electronics knowledge is sparse, so layman's version please !

  17. Hi all.

OK, a very simple question. I am trying to identify a wire-wound string set on a bass I have just bought.

The single most obvious detail is the anchor bobbins. They are colored,.......... gold  E, red A, grey D & silver G.

I am sure I have seen them before from some very well-known mfg, but I cannot remember who !

    Any help  would be great.
