1. Hey all - thanks so much for your thoughts! The SWR sounds tempting, but from what I've been reading around, you need some power to drive those cabs - 500+ into 8 ohms is what people are recommending to really make use of the cab. I only get 300 at 8 ohms from the PF 500 head, so I'm not sure thats the one for me at this point. The Genz Benz also looks great, but out of my price range right now. Cheers!
 2. Hi all, I am considering purchasing one of two used cabs, and I am wondering which (if either) would best suit my style of music. For those of you familar with either, or preferably, both these cabs, I am wondering what you think. Cab 1: Ampeg SVT Classic 410 BE, USA made, 8 ohms, 500 watts (sealed) Cab 2: Avatar B410 with the ceramic magnets, 8 ohms, 1400 watts (ported) I play through an Ampeg PF 500 head, and usually play blues, motown, blues-rock, and jazz. Also, any tests or checks that I should do for these cabs I check them out? Thanks much! Cheers, Steve
 3. Thanks for all the great posts here mates! I've enjoyed listening to them on a snowy afternoon in Michigan, USA. In the spirit of things, considering the holidays, here is a bit of amateur jazz with a holiday flavor. Be kind in your listening - it features my 15 year-old daughter on sax doing "Baby it's Cold Outside" by Frank Loesser with her high school jazz band. First time they've performed it live, and they didn't do too bad, if I can say so from a proud parent point of view Hope you can look past the not-so-great and enjoy it nonetheless Cheers and Happy Holidays to all! 4. I put a '62 Vintage Fender P pickup in my Squire Affinity P and have been really happy with it. Good luck with your mods! Cheers
 5.
And if Fender made sub standard guitars soon people would stop buying them I think it would take decades to take down a reputation like Harvard's. Especially for the general public.
If you can even get IN to Harvard - you already have proven you have a lot going for you. Unless of course, you get in only through some connections... which is rarely the case at Harvard.

 7. Almost 50! Play four and five string, P and J and a P/J Combo. I have played the guitar for about 30 years, and played trumpet for six years when I was younger. Have been playing mostly bass for the past 3 years and love it more than any other instrument I've played! As is no surprise given my screename - I love to play the blues. I also enjoy playing Jimmy Buffett songs - mainly 'cause I love Jimmy Buffett songs , and I also have fun playing Beach Boy songs - also because I love Beach Boy songs. Among other things, Brian Wilson played bass, and he wrote some fun bass lines, many of which Carol Kaye played in studio for the albums. If you've never tried them - check some out ie. Dance Dance Dance. Right now playing in a band called Don't Fret, but we've never gigged out yet - one of the members is still dealing with stage fright. Mostly playing out at a local Blues Jam that has an awesome host band. Cool thread - nice getting to know more about fellow basschatters. Cheers!
 8. Absolutely - do it about every day!
 9. Here's a decent tab, though you'll have to work it out a bit yourself. Hopefully it saves you some time. Good luck! http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/tabs/v/van_...ndance_btab.htm
 10. cafepress does have some great bass-related products under their bass section - t's, hoodies, steins, etc. - Go figure!
 11. For me it depends on if the solo adds to the music of the song OR sometimes I can just appreciate the talent behind the solo.
 12.
The guitarist helpfully suggested a "singer capo", produced a monkey wrench and attempted to raise the singer up a tone!
Good one!
 13.
Indeed. Growing older is compulsory. Growing up, however...
Jimmy Buffett wrote a song about just this thing "Growing older but not up" a classic...
 14. Although I have a Fender Mustang Bass too and that's really light - but I like the playability better on my SR505 because of the neck.
 15.
+1 I have an SR505 and, although weight wasn't a deciding factor in buying it, it weighs next to nothing and has one of the most comfortable neck profiles I've experienced.
+1000 to that ^ Love mine and sounds great too!
 16.
Bishop basher. (Noun): The term alludes to a person thumping his hand down on a Bishop to emphasise his disagreement during a sermon.
17.
I now have the most sumptuous, gorgeous, utterly lovely tones from my bass !! I can't tell you how beautiful it feels to want to play every note to its maximum effect. It's making me play differently, more sensitively, more simply. Everything I play feels like what I remember it being like on a lovely mushy trip in the 1980s (probably a bad thing to say, sorry!). I take delight in the simplest things, a simple octave, a grace note, a ghost, a tinkling of harmonics, a simple accent. It's wonderful, like fireworks going off in my head, to paraphrase Blue Oyster Cult. Coupled with the beautiful neck on my new Fender Jap Jazz, I could not be happier! For the first time, I feel like it's a true reflection of me. The chain .. Fender Japan 62RI Jazz, CAR with matched headstock, rosewood dot slab board, American Vintage pickups, Badass II, East J-Retro 01, DR Strings Black Beauties. POD X3 LIVE - amp model Acoustic 360 with a highish gain setting and the high mids up full, a little compression, a little basic digital chorus. Want some clips? Give me a few days to get that sorted. 28 downloads and one nice comment. I guess most people think my tone is sh*t then Seriously all comments are welcome, even if you do think my sound is a pile of poo.
I know that tone! I have it stored on my laptop using my Squire P Bass with '62 Fender Pups run through my Line 6 Pod Farm amp modeling software and Toneport GX. I call it my "William Ackerman" tone 'cause it reminds me of his music I love it too! Nice job finding the one you love
 18.
SR505 is fantastic value, I love mine and saw that it one 5 string of the year in a US bass mag recently
+1 Love mine too!
 19.
I have the "non-special" Jag-the black one Its a lovely bass-i went for it as its a bit quirky- it has the block inlays, p-j split pups, stacked volume/tone pots and matching black headtock. Since i got it, ive had it properly set up, a new bridge and nut fitted and it plays like a dream recommended!
+1 I love mine too
 20.
IME, D'Addario Chrome flats are bright and can be slapped (not that I slap) for a fair while before they dull down - much more so that TIs or the very thuddy Pyramids. They still have the nice slipperiness of flats though
+1 to the D'Addario Chromes - love the feel and the tone I can get is very versatile - am going to soon get another set to replace the rounds I have on my P right now - I had some on before, but switched them to my VM Jaguar - now I want them on both! Cheers!

 22.
Seriously? I thought we were better than that here, or did I accidentally sign in to TalkBass? He might be using the thumb tape for extra attack. And that isn't a mullet, it's just long hair tucked under his headphones, as if that's relevant to anything. *rant over* Kinda strange they used these clips on the site though, they were recorded in 1997 and I dare say the basses have changed at least a little since then. Wojtek's bass didn't have a Nemo carved into it, either! Unfortunately I couldn't read the whole introduction on the website. After the 4th time they used that dreadful American habit of referring to people as things (artists that..., players that..., people that...) I gave up. Objects are thats, people are whos, if that's OK with you, America.
It's just poor grammar - don't be getting down on all Americans!
 23. You probably checked already, but I'm sure I have seen these offered on E bay in different colors.
 24. Guilty here - have 4 basses - a Squire P Bass, an Ibanez SR505, a Squire VM Jaguar, and a Fender Mustang Bass, as well as a Fender electric/acoustic and an Alverez acoustic. I figure I have the P sound, the 5 string, the J or the P or the mix, and the short-scale basses covered However - still have yet to get on stage. I have a stand-in gig lined up for this summer - I saw a band I really liked last summer who did not have a bass player (but I thought they could use one) and I emailed them about maybe playing with them sometime. After awhile without hearing anything (I fugured they either thought I was a loony or that they get so many requrests like this they don't bother responding) I finally did get a reply. They said it would be great to have me sit in with them for a few sets. This probably won't happen until June or July, so I have a lot of time to prepare, but also time to get more nervous as the gig approaches. In the meantime, I'm trying to get the time (and nerve) up to go to a local jam, see what it's all about, and then give it a try if it seems like a fun (and friendly) crowd I have really enjoyed and appreciated reading the posts and replies to Hot Tub over several threads! Thanks for making those available and sharing your experiences. I agree - the people on BC are awesome! I will probably be looking for a bit of encouragement myself when time gets closer to that summer gig!! I know that getting up there and just doing it is the thing to do - it's just been easy to avoid with a busy life! BUT - I really want to do it and I'm going to. Cheers to all
 25. I have a Squire VM Jaguar (Blk, blk, tort, block) and LOVE it! Looks aside (which are sharp!) it plays and sounds like a dream. Nice being able to easily choose between j pickup, p pickup, or any blend between the two. I put a set of chrome flats on it and finally found the tone I was looking for. Neck is smooth and very playable. I have an Ibenez SR505, a Squire P bass, and a Fender Mustang Bass as well. My fav has definately become the Jag. I compared it in the shop to the Fender Jag, and I just could not justify spending the extra $ because it said "Fender" on it. I actually liked the feel and tone of the Squire better - so I bought it and I've never regretted it. YEMVH - but most everyone I've talked to or who have posted on here or talkbass have been very happy with their VM Jaguar. Good luck on your choice! Cheers!
