  1. That's a bummer if the bass starts it
  2. That's kinda Sad guys @CamdenRob @AndyTravis
  3. Not sure if this has been asked before. Who sorts out the running order for your set list ? With us its the guitarist mainly because he needs to change between acoustic and electric guitars and likes to keep the acoustic songs together to save a lot of change-overs and wasted time between songs. He also has a better overall idea of how the band sounds. He starts it and passes it around the band for approval or possible changes Dave
  4. Band mates. See them at rehearsals and gigs. Occasional meet for coffee usually at my house cause it seems to be most central for everyone. We all live in different parts of Central belt Scotland. Wanlockhead, Thankerton, Cumbernauld, Boness and Glasgow. Get on really well with these guys. Personally i don't really drink and drummer is much the same. Guitarist and singer like a beer but not when gigging. Keys guy has only just started with us a few weeks ago but i knew him from another band few yrs back. Dave
  5. Just watched that clip too and Glenn's voice is still incredible. Dave
  6. Send me your address just in case i need to send out a 59 LP. Dave
  7. Yep that was what i probably read and picked him up wrong. I only ever remember the Fireglo one with DP era. 👍 Dave
  8. I read somewhere recently about Glenn loving his blue Ric from those early years. Dave
  9. An Italian Restaurant ? That has to be up there with some of the weirdest places to play. Dave
  10. Forgot to add that when you start with a new band keep it simple and play the basics til you have settled in. Most bands don't want a flash git showing off in every song. They just want a solid reliable bass player that can hold a song together with a decent drummer. Dave
  11. You must have an idea of how you compare to other bass players that you like or listen to. 1. can you play what they play 2. can you play it exact same as them 3. can you play as well as other local bass players you've seen 4. can you keep good timing Just a few simple little things to help you judge your ability. Once you have an idea how competent then have a go at a jam night or even get together with fellow musicians just for a laugh and play a few songs you all like. Hopefully that will give you a better idea how good you are. You'll never know til you try. Dave
  12. welcome and a wee question what does the switch do on the bass. ? Dave
  13. I've still to try a set on my Jazz. Think that will be the next bass to experiment them on. Yep agree Gary had an amazing tone with his Jazz.
  14. You only worry when they are still wearing it.
  15. Think i'm still trying to find that balance between foundations and a bit more clarity like this Gary Thain using his Jazz with flats. Has always had a great tone from any of his basses and from what i've been told on BC he always used flats.
  16. Used them at 2 6hr rehearsals now first gig on 7th Dec. Have to say i'm finding movement on the neck a lot faster and easier on my fingers. Tone within a band setting seems to be holding its own. I do miss that roundwound edge tho but turning the treble up on the VM4 gives an unusual click if that's the right word. Not so much a rattle on the frets as a definite click but it gives some songs that little bit more when required. For most of our set the EQ on the bass is flat on treble with some bass boost both pick ups on evenly with the amp EQ at very slight plus on bass and treble. With rounds the treble was centre and mid was slightly plus. Doesn't seem to be a lot in it within band setting. I still need to tweak the EQ to get a little more clarity on the D & G strings but that's maybe down to the studio gear (EBS hd360 thru Ampeg 810) EBS amps are normally quite clear sounding amps tho whereas my Mesa can be more muddy tube sounding. I have the Reidmar 750 head at home so i have some comparison between the two amps. At the moment i'm enjoying them and i'll see how they sound first gig on 7th. Only a vocal PA as its a smallish gig 100-150 people. Dave
  17. Was in a Deep Purple tribute band few yrs ago and it was a challenge covering Glenn Hughes bass sound with my fingers rather than a pick. I had to grow my fingernails to get that click from the Made In Europe era which was my favoured DP era. Not tried a pick on those songs since late 70's Dave
  18. Not that i'm anywhere near as good as Geddy but i liked his earlier tone. Wish i had his ability tho
  19. Oddly enough most of my bass heroes back when i started were probably pick players too Glenn Hughes, Roger Glover, Chris Squire, Phil Lynott, Gene Simmons, Dave Hope, Mike Rutherford, Roger Waters i started with pick but moved to finger style as i got more into prog and jazz rock and then there was Geddy who had best of both worlds using finger style but sounding like a pick at times. Dave
  20. Go on you know ya wanna. Publish it. I remember playing in Dunstable in mid 80's Would it be the Wheatsheaf or something like that. I remember it being a great wee gig. We were well looked after by Landlord / owner and the punters both before and after the gig. Dave
  21. So who is Dave ?
  22. Current band was word of mouth. Singer was doing solo work with backing tracks but wanted to go down the road of full Glam rock covers band. He posted an advert on his FB page and a mate who knows both of us passed it onto me. I replied saying i would be interested. I said i knew a drummer from about 5 /6 yrs ago that was into Glam Rock. When i said his name he told me he already knew him for years and he had recommended me too. Small world i guess. Our guitarist was the bass player in the singers "other" Ozzy tribute band and our current keys player i was in an originals Prog band a few yrs ago. Was all basically word of mouth and people that knew people. First few bands were all mates but in last 5-10 yrs its been mostly word of mouth with one or two thru JMB or similar sites. Dave
  23. When younger watching bands was every weekend and therefore i was very aware the music was live. For those that don't go to see live bands are they under the illusion that everything is just mimed like the many TV programs they watch ie TOTP. There are artists / bands playing "live" that also mime and if you follow pop music i guess its what you'd come to expect from any band. Its a wonderful world we live in. Shame about all the naive idiots we have to put up with. Dave
  24. WOW that's a first. That really does take the P. Dave
  25. I'm very rarely in Edinburgh because of traffic and parking a nightmare. I've always headed into Glasgow so i know more of the venues in that area. If you asked that question as a topic you might get a better idea of what's available in Scotland. Dave
