1.
We could have one more, if you like - what about learning the importance of synergy in operation and execution? Does being in a band not provide you with a perfect example of such?
Kinda depends on the band.
 2.
Er, one other point that nobody's mentioned (and which I'd forgotten!): On most multimeters there are several different settings for measuring resistance, designed for measuring different ranges of resistance. You want it on the most sensitive setting, i.e. the one with the smallest number of ohms. On this one here, for example, you'd want it set to the "200" setting that's at 6 o'clock on the dial: If you get this wrong then you may be reading 0 even when there is a noticeable resistance.
That's a very good point. I use a Fluke which I rarely take off of 'autorange'.
 3.
HAHA ok I let you off but use it again and I'll send Katie Price round to talk about herself to you for 4 hours
Ah. That'd be 'black hole thinking'...
 4.
I am now able to communicate with the common folk using the vernacular.
Oooh! Is that the new app for the iTentacle ?
 5.
AAAAHHHHH he used business-speak. Must count to ten, must count to ten
I know. I did actually sit here for quite a while trying to find an alternative to that phrase but it sounded so fake and contrived that it would be obvious I was trying to avoid saying it, which is even worse!
 6. Absolutely. I'm can talk confidently and eloquently to large audiences, I have no issues being a 'team player' and, even though I fall into the 'analytical' (aka unimaginative) personality group, I have a reputation for thinking 'outside of the box' when it comes to problem solving.
 7.
.. that said you don't want to end up built like a man from holding your bass up for hours at a time!
Well it's not had that effect on most of you lot...
 8.
OK so this is really going to confuse you. The Ω setting reads .000 when the probes are together. Everything on the bass reads .000 when linked with the bridge. Is there a sparky in the house!?
No confusion here. It just means you haven't got an earth issue within the bass. Next thing to try is to plug a guitar lead into the bass. Measure from the body of the free end of the guitar lead back to the bridge - have you still got .000?
 9.
Being a musician is supposed to be fun - where's the fun in having constant back pain?
Oh I dunno, depends who's got the back pain really...
 10.
My bad. I am a multimeter newb so I was reading it wrong. The continuity test seems pretty good. Nothing is registering above ~025. Should I still be getting this noise? I'm really lost now. This just doesn't seem to add up. Whenever I touch any metalwork it's a really obvious pop and strings still crackle. I've tried a different floor now as well. Same problem.
OK, this is getting confusing now. Most multimeters working in 'continuity mode' aren't measuring resistance in a tangible way - they are just indicating that the item between the two probes conducts a generally unspecified voltage. Unless you have spent a significant amount of money on a multimeter with a calibration certificate, you are only going to be able to do a comparitive test. Using the meter on the Ω setting, touch the two probes together and make a note of any number that appears - you now know what a 'perfect' connection will look like. Make sure the tips of the probes aren't touching your skin when you do this or your reading will be off. As you work your way down the earth path, anything that varies from that 'reference point' number should be seen as suspect.
 11. It is odd isn't it... Probably the best bet would be to have a quick chat with the good folks at Korg(UK)Ltd - they're the UK distributors for Hartke. They're always been reported as being dead helpful here on BC when people are after advce or spare parts so this should be dead easy for them to answer. Korg(UK)Ltd. 12. In theory, the lower the value the pot is, the less high end is removed. In practice, the high resistance of the pot means that the signal becomes so weak at the end of the pots rotation that you can't really hear the difference anyway. Easiest way to approach it is to experiment changing the capacitor value and the pot value. Having said that, I'd fit the Seymour Duncans into the bass first and see if I actually needed to make any 'tweaks' with those in place - otherwise you've no idea where you've just moved the goalposts to...
 13. It's not unusual to find two different instruments have two different volume outputs and I'd expect the BB5 to far exceed the output of a JB. If you find it annoying when swapping instruments during a live performance then just set everything to suit the volume you play the Jazz Bass at and turn the Yamaha down a bit.
 14. Bet I know what's gone wrong here. This is easier to show than it is to explain, so bear with me. Remove the outer cable casing and you can see the braid. Untangle it and twist it to make a sensible earth you can work with. You are now left with a black wire - this is where things go wrong. That layer is actually a conductive sheath over the plastic insulation of the centre core and needs to be removed. I usually run a scalpel blade gently around it (it's very thin) and slide it off. If that black layer comes into contact with the centre pin of the plug then you're creating a partial short, so make sure you strip it well back. Once you've done that you'll get to the inner core insulation which you just strip back in the usual manner to give you a suitable length to work with.
 15.
But then, nobody's heard of Liam O'Brien, a 24 year old hip hop bass player from Cheshire have they?
Nope, and the only reason I've heard of Wooten, Pastorious and Geddy Lee is because people on here keep intimating that I'm a heretic for not falling to my knees whenever their names are mentioned.
 16.
Ok, so the tech put some 250k pots in, and everything works as it should.
Interestingly, the phrase about the 25KΩ pot is duplicated on every single instruction sheet on the EMG website. I do wonder if they perhaps made a typo on the first one and then copied and pasted that onto every subsequent one...
 17.
Do you have another floor you could try it on - generally domestic wiring is done with a ring main for each floor so the problem may just be on one of your rings *EDIT* - please take little care if the shocks are getting worse, we don't want any charred bass players.
+1 Try running an extension from an upstairs socket. Also, it would be worth doing a test on the actual earth wiring. A multimeter isn't really the right tool but you could do a fairly crude test to 'prove' that there is an earth connection of some sort there - kitchen sink or radiator pipe (assuming you have metal ones) to an earth point on a mains socket using the continuity setting (usually shown as a diode symbol... ->| on most DVMs). Ask a mate if you can pop round with your amp and bass to see if the problem is equipment or environmentaly related could also save a lot of guesswork as well,
 18. Right. I've read it properly this time. Soldered connections to pot casings seem to cause a lot of people problems (there have been numerous threads on here about that) so that would be a good place to look. One thing that does bother me though, did you make any changes/repairs/upgrades to the bass electronics prior to this issue surfacing or did it just start happening one day?
 19.
Yes... the thread title promised much. Like when Otto went to Stoner's Pot Palace and it turned out to be kitchenware.
Yeah. Had the same problem with the phrase 'as much pussy as you can handle' and ended up with 39 cats...
 20.
Thanks gentlemen, that's helpful. :-) Perhaps using a balance pot would be an option then.
Could very well be. Although the EMG forum has a number of posts about signal bleed when using two volume controls, there weren't any sensible ideas about a solution.
 21.
+1, except that this is also the first place the OP checked:
Oh good grief How can I have possibly missed that?!?
 22. Try taking a look at the wire that runs from the bridge back to the common earth point inside the bass - that's the first place I'd check as it seems to be a very common point of failure.
 23. The last minute call, yes. The fixed tuning issue, no. If a different tuning is required then my own expectation is that the guitarist would have a suitably tuned (or detuned) instrument ready to go.
 24.
I don't see myself using it much live as my band don't have much call for it, but it's a nice thing to have nonetheless.
I originally only used DB with a couple of folk bands until the guys from my covers band saw me playing at a folk gig. I now use an NS EUB for a couple of songs with the covers band and it sits really well.
 25.
Well, it's another string to your bow.... Ouch! Who threw that?!
Just be thankful it was a potato and not a sharp pointy thing with feather on the end...
