  1. Recently sold Greg a gig big for his DB. Lovely bloke, easy pleasant transaction with great communications throughout. Recommended!
  2. Not yet - got a couple of people looking at delivery possibilities though. Let me know if you’re interested, cheers.
  3. Totally agree - so much easier singing whilst playing guitar chords than bass lines.
  4. I’ve sung (mainly backing) vocals in every band I’ve been in. I’ve found that it’s a massive advantage if you can do this - I’m a competent but not brilliant bassist, and the fact that I can harmonise has got me work over more accomplished players. I have a very ‘neutral’ singing voice with a reasonable range, so it fits for BV’s just fine but as a lead vocal it’s not that special - I do sing the odd song here and there but know it’s usually to give the proper singer a rest, and don’t particularly enjoy doing it. I do really enjoy singing harmony, especially when playing in my acoustic duo - my partner on guitar has a great lead voice, and his range is slightly lower than mine so it works well. I think having played other instruments helps when playing bass and doing BVs. I started off on piano when I was a kid, moving on to guitar/keys in my first few bands so had some experience of chords/harmony which proved invaluable when starting with playing bass and singing. I think it’s harder playing bass than guitar whilst singing, and sometimes struggle with parts that say require a root note on bass and a major 7th on vocals or similar. Tend to rehearse each part separately and then try to do them together for ages until it sinks in.
  5. I saw 801 at Hull University in the late 70’s. TBH only went as I got free tickets from the record company, but enjoyed the gig and subsequent album despite not particularly being my kind of thing. Phil Manzanera is a great player, and love his iconic red Gibson Firebird V11. My brother was a big Roxy Music fan, and I remember hearing their first couple of albums blasting from his room. Wasn’t sure about the ‘smoother’ later albums, but enjoyed some of Bryan Ferry’s solo stuff, especially as it featured the great Chris Spedding on guitar.
  6. I’ll have what Danny’s having….. Clapton nicked ‘Tulsa Time’ from Don Williams, who recorded his version around the same period. Danny was in Don’s band at the time, and Clapton was a big fan.
  7. I like Stevie’s version more than the original. Good that we’re all different eh? Seeing as we’re talking covers of Beatles stuff, I can’t abide Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel’s mauling of George’s ‘ Here comes the sun’.
  8. Now ON HOLD, pending the usual stuff. Cheers.
  9. Even one missing rubber foot from a mic stand can create horrible resonances, especially on hollow stages.
  10. Nice bass , Univox?
  11. No probs - Castleford is good with me. Cheers.
  12. Skipton isn’t that far if you’re considering it - could maybe arrange a halfway thing with your bro? 😊
  13. I'm selling my double bass as it's not getting used and I could do with the space. After asking around on here (see 'Help needed to identify DB' thread in EUB and Double Bass section), it would seem it is probably a Boosey and Hawkes Excelsior ply model from around 1970's period. I can't find any labels to confirm any more than this I'm afraid. The soundpost is in place, and the bass appears in fairly good condition. It plays fine with an action I can manage as an electric bass player! It has two pickups fitted, one of which is a Polytone, (not sure about the other one). Both work although with a low-ish output, presumably typical of such pickups back in the day. There are also two bows in a bag included with the bass. The bass is for sale in East Yorkshire, about 12 miles west of Kingston upon Hull. I'd prefer cash on collection please, although I may be up for a meet up somewhere or possible help with delivery, depending on where and when of course. Any questions / offers / request for more pics etc welcome, and thanks for looking.
  14. Our (very) occasional Country band are playing a gig soon. We used to have a weekly residency, then things slowly started getting less frequent until now when we maybe do one or two gigs a year! It's a lovely gig with friends I've know for years, and an audience who have followed us throughout. Probably be using my Dano Longhorn which is due an outing.
  15. Paul Jackson is a bit of a local legend, and as you know Lozz the Adelphi has seen some great bands over nearly 40 years. Glad your memories of it are good ones.
  16. Try Darren Bunting, owner of venue O’Rileys in Hull. Also in Hull you could contact Paul Jackson at The New Adelphi Club.
  17. Great info, thanks. I wasn’t thinking of asking anything like those prices, was hoping for around £350/£400, so hopefully will sell.
  18. Some great stuff so far, thank you! Do you think it’s just one off those things that you just stick a price on and hope someone agrees? I probably haven’t got the opportunity at the moment to take it anywhere to get a professional opinion, hence my post. Appreciate it’s not an easy thing to evaluate of course.
  19. I’m hoping you knowledgeable folk on here may be able to help me identify / value this bass. (I’m looking to sell it soon, and have a subscription to BC so not after a cheap advert!) All I know is that it appears to be ply construction, and has some sort of pickup attached. The soundpost is in place, and overall condition is good. I’m no upright player ( or great electric player either TBH! ) but it seems to play okay. There is a bow with it too. So, any help greatly appreciated. Once I know more I’ll probably put a listing on here in the first instance. TIA, cheers.
  20. From what you’re saying I would think it highly unlikely the gig will be even there by October. How can places like that carry on being in business?
  21. We’ve been playing together a long time Dave, and between us can usually get through a wide range of songs. My mate Gary is an amazing guitar player / singer and knows so many ‘old’ songs- never ceases to amaze me. We can usually remember song structure / chords etc, it’s the lyrics that trip us up. Because of this we use a massive pad of material accessed via the ForScore app on iPad. Must have over 2000 songs which really helps in such situations. I think audiences understand that to play such a diverse set we need a bit of help so not a problem, and they really appreciate it when we can do their choice. We have a booking to play at a village hall do in the Yorkshire Wolds for the Coronation in May, and guess there’ll be a massive list of requests to challenge us - can’t wait!
  22. Played our monthly residency at a local pub with my acoustic duo. It's a request evening, and never fails to amaze me with the variety of songs people want to hear. Really busy night further bolstered by a group of people who had been in since lunchtime attending a post funeral do, so suitably lubricated by the time we struck up at 8.30pm. Some of the party were from Australia, so the evening was scattered with some (perhaps stereotypical) songs for them - starting with 'Waltzing Matilda', through to 'Whole Lotta Rosie'! These were fortunately well received by all the audience, and made the evening fly by for us. I really enjoy the unpredictability of gigs like these, which make a welcome contrast to my main band's gigs.
  23. Been doing that, and FB market place - nowt!
  24. I’ve been watching this thread with interest, especially as I’m currently looking for a bass for a friend of mine. He is a beginner, and asked me to help him find a bass. When he said how much will he need to pay, I said probably around £100 which is what I thought it would cost to find him a Squier Affinity or something similar. Been looking for a few days, and haven’t seen anything half decent for less than £150 or more. It would seem that even the budget end of the market has not been immune to a big hike. (I’ll maybe take a look at Thomann for a Harley Benton or something, but would have preferred to have a go on a bass before buying.)
