1.
All seemed very blinkered and small minded to me... but they'd still regard them selves pretty highly. Big fish small pond..?
There was a lot of that with the last covers band I played with for a bit, happy to play around their home town for their mates, employees, families, people that worked for them etc - and who would be careful to be seen applauding loudly lol - for peanuts, literally, they came away with 10 or 15 quid each for a 4 hour set. Put them in a decent venue away from home and all the confidence went. But they enjoyed it, and why not ? It was more a hobby than anything else, trouble was a couple of them thought they were stars... There is room for bands like that, but they should appreciate that for others its their livelyhood, or a big part of it. Trouble with telling bands they have to sell tickets is, it smacks of the pay to play scams that used to be run by a few promoters, y'know the one, £50 to cover the PA and bar staff, but if you sell enough tickets to your fan base and arrange a coach, your quids in
 2.
You would be surprised. There are some very dull forums where electricians talk about the size of twin and earth and electronics engineers talk about the characteristics of different diodes. It's possible to enjoy your work. In fact you spend a third of your life doing it, if you don't enjoy it you're almost certainly in the wrong job.
Yep, almost every 'normal' job I ever had was in electronics, Its not just forums, some of em spend their lives like that. i been lucky really, retired now, after beind self employed for 40 years, but I never had a job I didnt like, and never did one I didnt enjoy doing, never tolerated a boss being an arsehole, and never worked for free. Lifes just too short.
 3. My daughter started playing bass at about 14, I gave her an old P copy that I had bought to cannibalize, within a couple of years she was borrowing my gear for gigs and school concerts. I didnt really mind to be honest, I would have loved to get my hands on decent gear when I was 16. She doesnt play much now, but I have been known to borrow bits of gear from her.
 4.
I get this but I think good bands charge full stop...and they do so because they know they can get it. Of course, it might relative as if someone offered you the main stage at Glastonbury that would the Main cherry but it is unlikely anyway as the festival have NO reason at all to offer that. I don't think a good show would want to water down the bill by insisting on a free band... they'd be more interested in the integrity of the show than a small cost of the fee. FWIW all the best beer festivals around here pay...some pay decent money but none of them pay less than a pub. If they don't adhere to that some of payment structure, they aren't taken seriously and the better bands wont play that game for too long.
This...
 5.
maybe I should add that there's is no way I would do I'd do a NYE gig for beer money, but, we are doing a NYE gig for less than some of the sums that have been mentioned on here, but more than our usually fee. We are also playing a festival this weekend for no fee, but we get free admission for the band members and wags, worth £50 for each band member for a 40 minute slot, which I'm happy with
So admission is £50 each for the punters, but you get in free if you play free. Are the bar staff working for free so that they can watch ? How about the security staff ? Is the bar owner turning over his profits ? If all of the bands are playing free, its a nice day out, but dont kid yourself your not being exploited. Free admission is not worth £50. if your playing you wouldnt be paying. However, If its a charity you believe in, fair play to you.
 6.
don't people support bands as well? if you get enough support you make a lot of money at it, if you've just got a bit of local support you make a bit of money at it, if you've got no support you make nothing from it, or maybe I'm missing the point
Football has scores. Band get followers yes, but its hardly the same. If your entertaining professionally or semi professionally, you need an act, an image, stage presence, or be backing someone that has. A lot of bands playing for free can play well enough, but punters pay to be entertained, not to hear their mates play Alright Now and Brown Sugar etc while staring at their hands or feet. the same as the band that was on last night and the night before. NYE in pubs is as has been said, about selling beer, which will happen anyway - its new years eve, not many will leave if they have tickets and their friends are all there. Landlords know that, they also know which bands WANT to play and treat them accordingly. Better venues will pay for decent bands, its the range in between that misses out, but if the free beer type bands handled it better I think they could get a decent fee. its not just NYE, a few years ago it was red nose day and similar, now it seems to be daytime 'Charity' festivals, where its only the bands that are not getting paid, and a little bit is - Maybe - going to Help for heroes.
 7.
it's the same with any hobby, it's unfortunate that you've chosen a career that other people enjoy doing, but as I stated you have to make sure you're good enough to do it professionally, for instance the guys who play football on a Sunday morning do it for free because they're not good enough to get paid for it, go up a notch and you get semi pros who need a day job to earn enough money to live on, why should the music industry be any different?
It isnt. People support football teams, usually their local town or pub or whatever.
 8.
yeah I was anticipating that one, if someone wants to do your job for less either have to make sure you do it better to justify the money or find another job or lower your wage demands, it's called market forces
Its not a market, your giving it away. Whats more, your paying for the privilege. You still have overheads.
 9.
it all boils down to this, do you play for a living/the money or do you play for pleasure? I'm in the latter so money is of secondary importance to me, in other words I don't need the money, I don't think people should criticise me for it
So if you found someone doing your day job for 10% of what your paid, because they enjoy it, how would you feel ?
 10. To go out on NYE,is expensive, so there are always bands who will do it for free, or cheap, possibly not realising quite how much its worth. It gives them something to do for free, they can invite their friends, take the wife and sometimes the kids, and show off. Then 2nd Jan its back to the desk job and dreams of well paid gigs. I took a 10 year break in the 80s, and when I started again I played in a covers band like that for a couple of years and was surprised by the attitude towards getting paid, They got rid of me when I woudnt play NYE for the second year running, even though it was for money( not a lot though), family came first. Plus I hated playing the same old covers, often for free, and refused to play All Right Now etc. Out of that band, I'm the only one still playing though, and never for free. But then, I didnt have a career, or even a boss, so it was different for me.
 11. Just came across Muddy "Mississippi" Waters Live on Spotify. Excellent. Been on couple of hours so far, might move on to Koko Taylor in a bit.
 12. Are you errr, Jack the Ripper ? Wont you roll away the stone ? (Shalalala push push)
 13. Old trick is to loosen the screws, and with the amp on and buzzing give the tranny a good clout woth the handle of a screwdriver. But dont do that, its dangerous to work with the amp powered up... If the amp has a silicon rectifier, could be one of yer new caps is the wrong way around, or the rec has died, drawing excess current from the tranny might make it buzz. But then I'd expect it to smell or be getting hot, probably both.
 14. Most likely just loose laminations on the mains TX. Assuming theres no smell and its not getting hot.
 15. Who do you love ? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w_gMC3T7mIU
 16. Do ya think I'm sexy ? Who's gonna drive you home, tonight ? Who's Next
 17.
Hi. I am hoping someone out there can educate my addled brain on this subject of impedance matching. Basically I have a signal path through units as follows: Preamp output 10K ohms.....to.....Greater than 500K ohms effects input.......to........1K ohms effects output.......to......10K ohms power amp input. The question is, do I need to have matching transformers at any stage or can I just link it up as is ? Any help on this will be welcome, but not too technical please, "I look like a farmer but I am a farmer", to mis-quote Bo DidIey. Brian
Try it, wont do any harm - does it sound OK ?
 18.
That website's hilarious...
And theres a lot of truth on it too...
 19.
Got a weird one for you amp gurus out there. Got a Markbass Momark which has worked fine for years. Last nights gig only getting output to one of my 8ohm cabs. Tried new cable still nothing. Tried swapping cables and each cab works fine so happy the cabs are ok. Tried daisychain cabs and both work fine from a single speaker outputs on amp. Fine on both speaker outputs. So it's only when each cab is connected to its own speaker output on the amp it doesn't work. Any thoughts & yes, Monday morning I'll be emailing Markbass tech support too. Cheers.
Does a single cab work with both sockets ?
 20. I Wont play NYE any more, but thats a personal thing. If I did and beer was the only form of payment, I'd want £250 in beer/meal tokens redeemable any time during they year to suit me.
 21.
The disappointing thing for me is the number of people who take a bit of trivial internet banter so damn seriously as to feel the need to 'challenge' Mr Blue's opinion in strenuous and somewhat personal terms. I mean, do these chaps think that a grateful public (comprised in the main of mortally affronted 'young' people) will erect a statue to them, the plinth whereunder might bear the simple inscription 'He Fought For The Truth'. Actually, it's not disappointing. It's dispiriting. And very dull.
Cant argue with that. even if Keef does believe it himself. We dont know what the man really thinks though, do we ? He may not have really said anything of the sort, I can remember reading a 60s 'interview' of is where the thing he hated most was cross eyed people, and his favourite drink was milk. Anyroad, here's something else for diehard beatles fans to get angry over http://suckmybeatles.com/2009/11/29/reason-21-sgt-peppers-is-a-load-of-crap/
 22.
Don't put up with it. Although you probably write it off as "banter" at the moment, it is bullying and will eventually eat you up. I was in a similar situation when I played in a trio for 10 years. Over time the drummer's ego grew out of all proportion and I was the butt of increasingly nasty "jokes", "pranks" and comments. I haven't spoken to him for the last 20 years. I still play with the guitarist, who is a great bloke. The long and short of it is that it will get to you in the end, and you are best to nip it in the bud as soon as possible. If that means walking away from the band, so be it!
This... Before they get too confident that you wont react and include members of the audience in on the jokes. and that will happen if you dont sort it. Personally I'd not just walk, but do it so that people know that you quit and were not pushed. Cos rather than admit to going too far, they might well make out they had just been trying to get rid of you. Trust me, the same thing happened to me once.
 23. My old Bassman vibrates around the top of the cab, but only at some venues and not others. Simple answer, lay a bar towel between the top of the cab and the amp - always carry a few anyway, theyre cheap enough.
 24.
Water based adhesive + metal screw = rusty screw.
But not that rusty in such a short time. deffo something corrosive, at least in the builders PVA I used
