1.
I'll admit, as a bass player- that just looks like a strat to me. I was expecting 12 pickups and loads knobs or something
It was originally white 'vintage' (cheap) hardware. Stock pickups, single-ply pickguard, and horrible vintage tuners that didn't hold the strings in well at all. I had the pickups, pickguard and tuners replaced. Essentially it is still just a Strat, but it's the Strat I always wanted it to be, so I'm happy with it
2. My big interest is processing electric guitar (among other things) through software, namely Max/MSP. I'd choose electric over the others purely for its receptiveness and being manipulated. Here is my Mexican '62 Reissue that I recently had modified by a friend. I love it https://yfrog.com/nz9k8ksj:tw1 That being said though, I would really love a resonator...
3.
Eden cabs are nice, usually very loud, and full-bodied in the sound - or at least, the ones I`ve had were (410s).
Excellent, thanks! I think I might try a few different ones out first, though the price point on that Eden is very tempting just to get something of decent quality. I also saw on the LM250 page on markbass.it that it requires a 'minimum' of 4 ohms impedance. Does that mean between 4 and 0? Or 4 and upwards? i.e. could I use an 8 ohm cab with the LM250?
4. Has anyone any experience of this Eden cab? I'm thinking of buying one to go with a Little Mark 250 I just bought: http://www.thomann.de/gb/eden_ex112.htm
5. Thanks for the recommendations guys. I've just bought a MarkBass LM250 from a fellow member of the forum, so just after a cheap cab now! A lightweight 12" or something similar. I was thinking along the lines of this in terms of size, weight and price, but obviously would need to try it with my bass and the head: http://www.thomann.de/gb/eden_ex112_8ohm.htm - Any ideas? I play a Stingray 4 as mentioned.
6. So I became very disillusioned with bass around a year ago. Essentially I got bored of it and got stuck in a rut with my playing. I also got more into other forms of music that I didn't play bass for. Anyways, I'm looking to getting back into playing and maybe teaching a little, so I'm after a small, CHEAP amp that I can practice with, and maybe play the odd small gig with. Let's say max £350 for now. Second hand definitely an option too. I'm open to any ideas really. I play a Stingray 4 and an Ibanez BTB406QM. I've not been following anything bass related for about 14 or 15 months now so I'm pretty clueless! Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks! EDIT - Should say I'm open to anything that's SUPER portable. Planning on moving back to London in the next couple of months so needs to be tube friendly!
7.
Being frustrated is not a good frame of mind to be learning anything.
Agreed. I don't think I've ever learnt anything when I'm frustrated.
8. My strings arrived but I think I bought the wrong gauge (the E in particular feels too thick). I've put them on the bass obviously, so am I right in thinking I can't send them back for a replacement?
9. Thanks for the suggestions. I usually buy online (Overwater rounds), but was picking my bass up from the Gallery so figured I may as well buy some strings whilst I was in town. EDIT - Just ordered some Chromes from Stringbusters. £15 more expensive on Stringsdirect!
10. Tried to get some D'Addario Chromes for my Stingray today. Tried the Gallery, and most of Denmark Street. Couldn't find any except a 5 string super long scale set (not what I need). I seem to have trouble with buying strings in London; either seems to be Rotosounds or Elixirs. Is there anywhere else I should look where I can get some Chromes?
11.
Got the Rhythm Section Jam Pack and its pretty good. Sound quality is excellent. I only really use the drum loops but there's many guitar and bass loops in there. I think they're also compatible with Logic if I remember rightly. The only trouble is I've found that if you find a particular set of drum loops that sound good, there just isn't enough variation. Minor gripe if your only using them for one or two songs. There's also plenty of midi loops which, if you have a decent sample programme you can really get some good variation going.
You're right. Logic Studio comes with all of the Jam Packs built in. I only really use the drum loops myself; I don't have the means (or the skills) to record live drums!
12. I have the score already, from Lucas Pickford's site.
13.
Its a standard 12-bar in Bb. The substitutions are fairly routine but I would avoid replicating them if I were you. Just stick to the form and the feel rather than the detail (because if you try to nail every nuance, you will fail and fall on your ar*e and, remember, Jaco was playing with Michael Brecker and Don Alias. You won't be because they are both dead - unless you are looking at the Mingus LP version?). You may want to look up the original Mingus version (no idea where that is) or there is a Mingus Dynasty version featuring Charlie Haden that will help. Good luck.
Thanks, just out of curiosity could you explain what he's doing with the substitutions? The version I'm learning is the Mingus LP one, yeah.
14. Learning this for a singer friend of mine, and it's doing my head in. I have the score, but that's not much help at the moment; I'm having problems getting to grips with the feel of it. It's moving too fast for me at the moment, and isolating parts of it are just confusing me at the moment. I don't really get what Jaco is doing. I know it's a 12-bar, but the substitutions he throws in don't seem to make much sense. Bah! I'm not a fan of his playing at all. Any help tackling this is appreciated!
15. http://vimeo.com/21526701 This is my Live Electronics assessment performance. I was playing tabletop bass and guitar through Max/MSP, controlling FX with my iPod, and recording loops with a Behringer FCB1010. Go have a look!
16. I'm playing almost everything at the moment. I don't own an amp but I usually set whatever one I'm using flat. I set the EQ on my bass (SR500) to: Bass - 6/7 Mid - 5 Treble - 0/1 I find that suits me for most things (primarily jazz and rock), but I'll tweak it depending on what I'm playing.
17.
Are you just playing them by running patterns,or do you actually know what you are playing and how the notes work together? Don't look at scales as technique practice. Learn the notes that are involved and play them all over the fingerboard and over every available octave. If you are just running patterns then you will get nothing out of them.

That's great advice. My bass tutor has got me to do this and it really helps! I now think about the notes and where I can go from there. I still use patterns but within the context of knowing the notes I am playing.
Yeah, I'm doing this. I used to just learn the patterns but obviously you just get locked into that shape. I'm running scales from the root, up to octaves in different fingerings so I can learn as much as possible re: improvising from different places. I'm also going down to the bottom of the range on the bass in a particular scale, so for CMaj I'm going C, B, A, G, F, E then back up.
18. Here's my very basic pedalboard, looking for more effects! I'm open to suggestions: playing everything from jazz improv to silly synth rock. Thinking about a Behringer BDI21, maybe replace the PD7 with a Big Muff Pi or similar, a tuner pedal. Any ideas for other pedals I haven't thought of? http://img841.imageshack.us/i/28022011420.jpg/
19. My bass teacher has me on this new practice routine, which is going well so far, but! I'm having trouble sticking to the scales practice. He said I should have 20 mins a day "technique" practice, which means scales, modes, fingering etc. I can certainly see the benefits, but there's only so much of playing up and down a scale over one octave, two octaves, one string, in thirds etc. It gets old, fast. I'm too easily distracted from it at the moment. Does anyone have any tips for making it more interesting?
20. My dad insures my music gear on his home insurance. It's all insured inside and outside that house, so anywhere in the world!
21. I leave one or two on my amp so if I drop one I can just spin around and grab one. Hasn't happened yet though!
22. Traded my Boss ME-50B for an MXR Auto-Q. Arrived this morning and it's great! Well packed etc. Friendly PMs, easy as pie to deal with! Top marks all round.
23.
How old are your guitar leads?
They're all new! Less than three months.
24. I have three basses, and all of them have developed similar problems. They're all active (Ibanez SR500, Ibanez BTB406QM, Music Man Stingray 4 3EQ), and there seems to be some kind of problem with their circuit boards. I think there might be some kind of contact on the boards that shouldn't be happening. The Stingray is at the Gallery getting fixed (took it in 13th Jan, heard nothing from them...), the BTB is almost unplayable through an amp; sometimes it works but mostly it crackles, makes popping noises, cuts out randomly and general white noise. The SR500 is the least problematic; every now and then there'll be a pop sound through the amp (definitely not the amp, I've tried several different ones). Any idea what's causing the same sort of problem in these? The Stingray's issue is a recurring fault from a couple of years ago, but I'm suspicious about how both my Ibanezs have sprung the same problem within a few months of each other. The electricity safety report thing for the house I'm living in at the moment says the electrics are 'satisfactory', and are 35+ years old. Is that likely to cause any kind of issue in the basses? Maybe a surge of some kind? They're all giving me electric shocks from time to time too, which is annoying. Any advice is appreciated
25.
All I can say is that our keyboardist only uses Mainstage live now , two controller keyboards and a laptop , Rhodes pianos , strings samples you name it its all triggered from mainstage , and it all just works , bloody amazing if you ask me !
Yeah, a friend of mine uses it for keyboards in a cover band, and the synth player in my band uses it. I wouldn't mind having it to get some really synthy sounding bass; I don't fancy shelling out for a synth pedal! Also wouldn't mind it for some sounds that lean more towards noise.
