1. Firstly, beauty is in the ear of the beholder. There are guys out there that hear a good sound from cheap gear (and that goes for the majority of the public) that's all well and good but if your looking for "that" sound you have to diversify a bit more and when the options narrow the price goes up. My combined gear is in the "not too shabby" sector (and it makes me happy) but most of the gigs I do I use the farty old house backline and this doesn't bother me because at the end of the day I know that even if I took my gear to every gig chances are the sound guy would slaughter my sound anyway. In these situations it is an advantage to have a bass that has either a distinct sound or enough eq to rake you out of the sludge - there aren't many low end basses capable of doing that. In my experience upgrading your gear exposes your technical inadequacies which in turn forces you to get better... and it's cheaper than lessons in the long run - win/win.
2.
....I was actually very happy with the numbers that showed up I thought it was a great day, great chatting with everyone and getting to play some gear in a very, very well mannered fashion. On the note of Alan's effort have to say the only thing I was a bit disappointed about was the lack of people telling Alan they weren't coming if anything just so we could let the band know earlier no one else was bothering really doesn't take long to post up on basschat or shoot a pm to someone. Just common courtesy I think...
Word! Great pics man.
3.
That blue fretless bass attracts me like a magnet...
It was one of my favourites of the weekend. It is effortless to play - really silky in your hand. I was left with the impression that you could play it all day long and not get tired fingers.
4. Nice pics Pete.
5. I wipe down after every gig with a microfiber cloth and polish on a regular basis. I use it on everything.... varnish, fretboard, hardware and strings. There's probably some secret guitar rotting chemical in it but to date it works for me. I love the feel of my freshly polished guitars - especially the strings.
6. Was a bit too hungover to remember to keep taking pics (doh!) but I managed a couple... Not sure if Neepheid actually wanted to come or if he'd been booted out with all his worldly belongings In the loud area. L to R Eude, Neeps, Greenking, 7string, a token guitarist (who's a great bass player too) and Sugden. Dave's headless acg 5 and some random junk that came down with us fae Aberdeen.
7. I guess you could say I put on a passionate performance and often get lost in the moment especially at the end of a long set (last big gig, I passed out in the backstage area due to exhaustion straight after coming off stage - can't even remember playing the last song). Not so long ago I kicked my bass in the neck a few times as part of the "final chord cacophony". It took me a day or two to pluck up the courage to see what damage I'd done - thankfully nothing. If you knew me and knew how well I look after my gear you understand how these spontaneous "posturing f*ckwit" episodes totally run against the grain. Planning to do it (unless for comedy value) is crap. I've never smashed a guitar and probably never will but I can't rule it out. We'll just have to see what happens. I've often thought about clunking it round the head of an annoying punter though.
8. What they said ^ It was a real pleasure to meet each and every one of you and to bare witness to some righteous basses and bass playing. Did I really see Dave tapping like a mofo possessed on Neepheid's Les Paul? Or was it just the Ketamine....... I've said too much. Nice one Alan. Put me down for next time.
9. Come on peeps. Who else is coming?
10. IIRC they have a different core and are wound at a different speed (dunno what diff that makes). I've got Blues on my MM S.U.B. best strings for it to date. Yes, even better than EB strings.
11. Jezz that's not even trying!
...but i want to be completely honest...
60 points to Slytherin.
12. Although the latter makes for better science, I have fallen head over heels in love with the Lindy Fralins on my custom 4 so the former may well be true too. edited for atrocious spelling
13. Yeah the way it was originally knocked together meant that it was far more convenient to desolder from the pup end than desolder the mess of wiring and then re-thread the pup wire back through the dodgy routing. The Bart pup is a dream to desolder too as it has a common earth plate and a hot post sticking up out of it - so there's no mucking about, 2 touches of the iron and it's off. I see the 2 wires coming out for the common earth are good but as you say there's no way of telling what has happened at the other end of the +ve post as it is in the resin.
14. The title says it really. I have feverishly spent the last few days getting my custom 5 ready for the England/Scotland bash, just putting it back together and I discover that the bridge pickup is nearly dead - one side works (very quietly) but the B E side is dead. I pull it and test it - no continuity. I rig it up to a spare jack socket and it is now completely dead. How? It's a Bart 59J1 - L completely encased in resin so physical damage to the coils is out. I was quick and careful with the soldering and desoldering. I don't get it. I'm so scunnered coz there were so many issues with this bass when I got it and I really wanted to show it off now I have fixed each one. The bridge pup really was the jewel of the bass, there's no point taking it to the bash now.
15.
I'm assuming the guy is Polish and English is his second language...it seems from his feedback that he's sold a few guitars previously. As i said, he may have gone back to Pole-land for his hols over Easter...Easter is big in Poland...but he could have stated as much if that's the case...
Yep, I hope you're right. Googling his name brings up a couple of mentions so I guess that's something. A bit of a Virgil Donati fan apparently. Good luck man.
16. You'd think that with £500 coming into your account that it'd be in the forefront of your mind.
I sell Sandberg Basic 4 string Bass Guitar
I don't know why but that description would have got alarm bells ringing for me. Keep up the PayPal approach - sometimes a$$hole sellers will just delay and delay until the the dispute process runs out of time. Have you done a "details request" yet? It sort of lets them know that you are on the case. An email mentioning legal action might get the ball rolling if all else fails. Maybe our Evesham massive might recognise it (it doesn't look that big a place) and be able to do some chasing up for you.
17. Last shout for a lift from reet oop north (room for 1). Probably take the western route (Aberdeen>Stirling>Glasgow>Moffat) but as I had a gig in G/gow last weekend and just drove that way already I'd easy be up for coming down the east side (Aberdeen>Edinburgh>Moffat) if needed - it's six and half a dozen to me.
18.
I'm guessing here but there might be a few other basses there to play, if your's don't make it I'll even let you play one of mine for a second or two...
That's frightfully decent of you sah.
19. I'm panicking. Both the basses I was going to take are in bits, I don't have enough materials (ie veneers) to finish them and my sander died today.
20.
Aye, 1066
Right enough. Here's me and my mum leaving the hospital...
21.
I thought this may be misconstrued. What i meant to say was did you mean to put 24 as opposed to 42, a common typing error?
Aha I see. I wish it was a typo. But no, I'm genuinely a '66 vintage.
22.
Are you joking? Surely you've just mixed the numbers the wrong way round mate.
Ha ha she'd be chuffed to hear that.
23. I'm 42 years old.... the girl is 20 years old... this pic is 4 days old. I've still got it... it never left me.
24. I've got dibs on the J if he's shipping.
25. Yep shame. I would have had the J 5er .... and the P-esque ... aw heck I'd have had the lot.
