2. Slayer are the only one of the big 4 that I've never gotten into, I have respect for the career they have had, but just don't like their music Is there something wrong with Lombardo that has caused him to be replaced? He is a monster of a drummer.
3. if you PM me your postcode I can give you an exact amount, but I would guess £10-15
4. Hey all, Large bills this month means that I have to move on my Orange Terror Bass before I've even had a chance to use it I bought it on eBay about a month ago, and the guy had bought it new 18 months before that. He told me that the active/passive switch didn't work, but I have since found out that it works fine, but the catch is broken, so it doesn't stay pushed in. Other than that, everything else works fine. I am visiting my mum this weekend so I can't get any pics of it right now, but I will put some up on Monday after work. Taking into account the dodgy active/passive switch, I would like [s]£300[/s] SOLD for it. The head can be collected from Oxford, or a courier can be arranged Thanks, Adam
5. the one sold was at 9.90. I think this is a standard tactic when you are waiting for more stock to turn up: rather than remove the listing, just put the price up really high so no one clicks 'buy', then once you get more in put the price back down.
6.
Through the bridge, a standard 34" P bass needs long scale Chromes in my experience. If you string through the body it might be different.
awesome thanks. I'm going to be top loading the strings, as this is my first set of flats and I don't wanna risk messing them up with the high break angle you get going thru-body.
7. I've just realised the d'addario chromes I've bought are long scale, rather than medium will they fit onto my p bass, or should I send them back? EDIT: just did some reading on talk bass and apparently when d'addario say 'long scale' they mean 34"-36" so I should be fine
8. also, this should probably be moved to the effects and pedals section
9.
I agree to some degree, but it's possible that someome "giving it a go" will get turned off if the fretboard buzzes and the sound is wrong. If they aspire to a good sound, then the sound needs to be what they expect to hear. I'd advocate secondhand, but they need to try some basses out. Also, off subject maybe, but if you want to keep your local music store to still be there next year, then buy your gear from them. They won't survive if you only use them to try stuff.
are the cheap instruments really that bad? I've certainly never picked up a 'cheap' bass (sub 100 quid) and been put off playing because of it. I still quite regularly pick up my girlfriend's Benson bass to practice because it is closer or my P bass is packed away. The only bass that put me off playing it was a 500 quid MiM Fender P-bass, it was just awful.
10. Personally, I've always been disappointed with over-ear noise-cancelling headphones. I much prefer a nice fitting set of in-ears that form a seal in my ear to cut out extra noise.
11. I guess it depends what you mean by the word 'beginner'. Do you mean people who want to give the bass a go to see if it is for them, or do you mean someone who definitely wants to play the bass and needs a decent bass to keep learning on? If it is the former then they aren't necessarily going to want to spend 200 quid on a peavey/squier vm are they?
12.
Mmm, yeah it is fair. How did you handle it? I've had a no recently, we took our kit and ended up using theirs anyway. Massive waste of energy. Would you expect your drummer to share his shells?
I said that it was fair enough, and got our drummer to bring his kit instead. Our drummer had a decent sized car, so it wasn't really too much of a problem for us. It made set up take a bit longer though. I wouldn't necessarily expect him to share all the time, in the same way that I wouldn't always share my rig, but I would expect an open mind to requests to share
13.
I'm guessing that a few of us here end as default band manager so how do you handle the tricky situation of asking about sharing drum shells? I always try to ask the band who are playing last if its ok before we turn up to the gig. Mostly people say that its fine as long as we bring drum breakables. Is this other people's experience?
I've been the organiser person for my previous bands, and yea, this is pretty much what I have found. I've only had someone say no to a request to share drum shells once, it was a guy who had just bought a new kit and was really protective of it. Fair enough though, it is his kit.
14. my first bass was an Eastcoast (rebranded Stagg) P/J. It cost me 60 quid back in 2002 and it was very playable. Sure, the pickups were a little weak, but for a starter bass it was absolutely perfect.
15. I always used to let other people use my rig at gigs, until at one gig I happened to walk onto the stage as one bassist had decided that every dial on my amp should be at full cos 'that is what [he] always does'. I was really close to removing my gear right then and there, but decided to give him a firm but polite explanation of the controls and EQ, with strict instructions not to touch them again. Since then I make a point of having a bit of a chat with anyone who asks, in advance, to borrow my rig, and if they seem reasonable and have an understanding of their instrument and EQing then they can use it. I no longer loan out use of my rig without being asked in advance. Some people call me grumpy and a spoil-sport haha.
16. personally, I have never seen the point in trying to sound like, or play like, someone else. After all, I'm not someone else, I'm me, so why would I waste my practice time trying to copy someone else, when I could be spending it becoming a better version of me. OT: to me, a 'good' bassist is one who plays what the song needs, rather than what their ego wants.
17. Very nice I really like all 3 songs. Everything comes together really well, awesome vocals, great bass sounds and nice song writing. Great band name too Let me know if you gig down Oxford way, I would love to come see you guys play.
18.
An opinion in a forum without a back-up is like a public, smelly fart.
Please elaborate? I don't quite see the link there. I think what people are saying is that a very small number of people use a bass guitar in the way the player does in the video, yet there are so many companies who use slap players to sell their gear, most of whom use a tone that sounds like it is coming out of the end of a long cardboard tube.
19.
Why the hating? I would like to see the level of the "down-talkers" around here.
People are allowed their own opinions (P.S. don't go near the 'you can't comment unless you are better' comments that ended badly on here last time, haha)
20.
Yes! http://lakland.com/ac_j-sonic.htm
that is great some of the sample songs are really catchy, haha.
21. Definitely IMO, if rounds sound right to you then it is rounds you should use, regardless of potential fretboard wear. I've just ordered myself a set of chromes because I really want to try a set of flats on my P bass. I may hate them, but at least I will know
22. it sounds like the amps you are using are a bit dodgy/have been abused. FWIW, I have had and used several ashdown rigs in my time (including an EB180) and I have managed to get a nice tone that can be heard and sits well in a mix with every single one, and they have never had any problems I would actually put the MAG600 head up as one of the best bass heads I've owned, especially for its price.
23.
Be aware that no flats sound like round wound strings. If it's the sound of roundwounds on your fretless that you like, you may well be disappointed.
This is very true. Flats are definitely not for everyone. I would say they are worth trying though you may end up loving the sound.
24. If you plan on going down the TC Electronics route I strongly recommend saving up and getting the RH/Classic 450 along with the RS cabs. I have had the BH and BC range and found them to be cheaply (read as badly) made and quite nasty if I'm perfectly honest. In contrast, the RH450 I was loaned for a couple of gigs last year sounded lovely. The GB stuff I have used has been well put together and sounded decent. Not had any experience with the rig you mentioned though.
