1. Surprised that we haven't much mention of base! Why are your speakers so big? As for kettle leads - then I would prefer to call them power leads. As I work in IT I'm very conscious of the correct terms, especially when having high-power draw devices that actually use the C15-C16 connections than the usual C13-C14 connections.
2. I have and within 30 minutes I got an email from Chris May asking me to call. I did and it turns out I'd got the pickup control the wrong way around fully anti-clockwise (from playing position) it is the bridge pickup and fully clockwise is the PJ. Anyway Chris said that the bridge pickup may have a pair of coils out of line. I live just down the M6 on the Lancashire/Cumbria border so I offered to bring my Classic J up on Saturday. I will just ring Chris on Friday to confirm. I'm looking forward to getting the bridge pickup sorted and using it more, as it sounds great. I will update here and continue to give all praise to Chris and the crew at Overwater for such great care.
3.
The plug is not an issue they all have an icc (iee?) or 'kettle plug' style socket as most of us call them so you just use a local version where ever you are.
It is an IEC 60320 C13-C14 as the inlet and outlet. They are often called kettle leads but that may be a misnomer as high power leads actually use a C15-C16 set up which is the same as the C13-C14 pairs but there is an extra notch in plug and a ridge in the socket . You will find that most computers, monitors, etc. use the C13-C14 but most laptop power supplies do not as they either use a cloverleaf style of plug and socket in the PSU (this is also properly called a C5-C6) or a figure-8 (C7-C8). Several USB printers use the C7-C8 - but this is only a Live and Neutral connection. If you are looking at going to other countries then the opposite end to the C13 will be the domestic plug for whatever country. I would pop along to the local PC or computer store and pick up a power lead which would fit the bill. Just make sure the fuse rating is OK - if the domestic mains connector is fused.
4. That encourages me to get in touch - as I have a Classic J - but on the PJ pickup the D string is very much weaker in response than the others. The other pickup setting is fine. I have tried a bit of tweaking - the string height and pickup height, but I cannot get it to be at even roughly the same output level. So who did you get in touch with?
5. Currently: Virgil & The Accelerators - debut album. Saw them supporting Robin Trower at Brewery Arts Centre, Kendal recently. Very neat - actually thought the bassist had a better tone than Robin Trower's new bassist/vocalist. http://beta.mflow.com/artist/virgil-the-accelerators BTW mflow is another streaming music site - but better organised than grooveshark. mFlow is free and has Pink Floyd unlike Spotify.
6. Quite like the twenty pound note, or the hundred euro!
7. The head is a dream. Thanks for the sale. I hope you can sell the cab. It was just too big for me. But the cab sounds great - looks in great condition. At that price someone will get a bargain.
8. Maplin - expensive try CPC: http://cpc.farnell.com/pro-elec/pe00070/rewireable-iec-plug/dp/PL09635 For the price of the Maplin IEC C14 you can get a ready made C13-C14 cable from CPC.
9.
Yep, tis a very good DVD as well. Good stuff. Garry
If you're on Lovefilm - then you can get it from them. I did and a great DVD. Check it out
10.
They should employ somebody with "Putting a decent magazine together" experience while they're at it.
I'll be pedantic and note the number of xrst items -I think that the pre-press people used ligatures and the printer did not - this is probably why first changed to xrst - the fi were a ligature. Eg page 35 It smacks of poor controls. Also I would to have the EBS CL112 cabinet - its weight is stated at 15kg (3lb) can I have the one in imperial measurements! 3lb for a 12" cab would be fantastic. I also cannot understand why the EBS CL112 cab with a 12" driver is 380x490x340mm whereas the Genz Benz 12T is 690x580x440 - seems almost twice as high? I don't play an upright but on the AER review I'd expect the reviewer to have actually tried an upright through it. I'll stop now.
11. Anyone who is a subscriber found the Digital Edition yet? I could not see anything that led me to it.
12. I'd suggest Airbourne - though very much in the same vein as AC/DC; but as someone mentioned a didgeridoo then some songs from Jamiroquai like Didjital Vibrations (great groove). Vince
13.
hi everyone, so we have our first gig. 24th at the georgian theatre, just a short support slot. was wanting some advice as im bass aswell as lead vocals. as i want to be a good front man and get involved and stuff so people will want to come see us again, but dont want to wind anyone up by doing to much.... if that makes sense. is there some sort of etiquette that goes with doing a support slot?
I'd make sure that none of your songs are done by the main heading band. Even if you have to change your set list.
14. Good communications, good price, fair dealing and everything is fine. No issues at all - very smooth.
15. We have started with 3 Beatles songs. But have changed to start with 2 CCR numbers: 1) Bad Moon Rising 2) Proud Mary. Well known songs, fairly straightforward starters.
16.
Get the drummer involved first if you intend to use one on gigs. And then set up to the natural volume of the drums...so you can ALL hear what is going on. Adjust instrument/vocal vols accordingly. Different type rooms make a huge difference so get used to working with unhelpful rooms..and the same applies..start the mix low and keep it in check. Don't let anyone instrument swamp the overall mix. If you do this, it is hard to recover and you might miss cues as you are lost etc etc .... If you can't hear, you can't play... always always keep that in the equation and if anyone 'forgets' that, you'll always have potential problems so you may as well make it a band rule now, IMO/IME.
Thoroughly agree - one of the reasons that you are "all over the place" is the change of venue - it will make things sound very different. I bet that you are losing the cues that you provide each other during a song. The thing is, that with time spent on setting up, sound checks, getting the levels, mix right will play off in hte long run. You will find that as you then get gigs in different places that the experiences of setting up and getting the levels right will mean you are able to adapt to the various places. The basic thing that drives the mix and levels of my band is the drummer. The vocals have to get over the drummer, from there the guitar, keys, bass fit in. Personally, I use a small bass combo with a feed into the main PA. My combo is mainly for my hearing. I also put a bit of it in the monitor mix. I have found that the people in the band need some "education" about the difference between the main mix (ie FOH and what the audience hear) and the monitor mix (ie the foldback what we hear). Of course, there is always the struggle from most people that I need to hear more of me. It is a compromise - and just increasing the monitor levels can mean that the monitor spill will affect the main mix in small venues.
17. I have a plastic enclosure with a tweeter and a 12" driver. It used to have a pair of amps, but they went and I have removed them. It was part of a small PA system as one of the active speakers. So my (potentially dumb) question: Could (should) I re-use them as a bass cab? I note that that the tweeter has an impedance of 2.5ohms and the 12" driver is 8ohms. Which means either I ignore the tweeter or have to do something (?) to make the overall impedance either 4 or 8 ohms. I have a simple passive crossover that replaces the gubbins I had to remove. At present, I use a Line 6 Studio 110 as basically a stage monitor as the output goes into the main PA. But I'm thinking that I might get a rig of a head and cab, as I find the 110 a bit quiet as a monitor (to get over our drummer and guitarist). So in spreading out the expense, I thought of getting a head first and using it with this enclosure. Then getting a either a 1x15 or 2x10 cab as the next step. Comments, suggestions, recommendations? Thanks
18.
Minotaur Bass straps are what I use and they are the dogs dingly dangly bits. Fairly pricey mind (£40ish) about 4" wide and 60" long.
I've just got my minotaur strap and very comfy it is as well. Getting the Schaller straplock on the front end of the strap where it is thick leather was a struggle - but I got there. It was a 7 day wait before a little parcel from Greece appeared. Recommended.
19. Well - I've done the deed. I bought a black Classic J from Promenade Music, Morecambe. The Contemporary J which was my object of desire was just too much money for my limited budget. But the feel of the Classic J is great and the black Classic J will be like the photo neg of my Cort C5H which is white. I'm liking the simplicity of the Classic J: passive (no batteries to worry about); three controls (pick up pan seems much more sensible than the Fender two volume controls). A great variety of sounds in all and great build quality.
20. Attached is a photo from the gig....with me sat down with my Cort C5H. My cast is off now, so looking forward to being more mobile and getting back to grooving about!
21. The gig went really well. I lasted both sets and was grooving along even though I was sat down. We were outside and our band's PA covered more of an area than I thought. The wind was a bit troublesome with the MICs - must get some foam covers. For me it was great to have an hour between sets as I could get my leg elevated and try to reduce the swelling a little. Even more so was the rest of the band had to set up and take down the rig and PA. I'm the one usually taking care of PA stuff and set up. We even had a couple of people listening and making adjustments to the main mix. So we sounded good and played well and the sun came out strong in set 2. All in all - a great gig.
22. If you are a member of Lovefilm.com then Victor Wooten's Groove Workshop DVD is in there. I have disk 2 at the moment.
23. On my iPhone I have: Guitar Toolkit - mentioned previously TabToolkit - can take Guitar Pro files and play back on the iPhone PolyTune - neat - but the low B can confuse it Pedersen Strobe Tuner - neat Bass Rig models: Amplitube - there are some bass amps and FX Ampkit - a bass amp and some FX PocketGK - GK amps and two cabs; can play backing tracks directly from the iPod app I use the Peavey Ampkit Link as my interface into the iPhone. I also use on my Mac: GarageBand iTunes Guitar Pro Neutrino - this can do key changes or tempo changes; uses the iTunes library Line 6 PodFarm - some very neat Bass amps, and FX Amplitube - I have a single Ampeg model which sounds great Ableton Live - not used much recently Interfaces: Line 6 UX2 Presonus Firebox
24. Despite the title, I've only been playing bass for a couple of years with some friends in a band. We do covers and a wide variety of songs as well. Anyway, we're playing tomorrow at a Royal Wedding party in the local primary school playing field. So there are two bits of strangeness: 1) Royal Wedding Gig 2) Outside. Furthermore the main strangeness factor is that I'm playing sat down. This is because about 6 weeks ago I came off my bicycle and ended up fracturing my 5th metatarsal. So my foot is still in a cast. However, in the intervening weeks I managed to get DVT in the same leg as the cast, and some clots (pesky rascals) managed to move to my lungs so I was kept in hospital two nights. Anyway, that's getting behind me and I'm improving. Still means that I'm sat down playing which is very strange, as I'm usually wanting to jig about a bit (particularly when playing Love is the Drug). I'm really looking forward to the gig, as there's not much else I've been able to do in the meantime. No walking, cycling, driving. Even getting about the house has been difficult - what with the crutches and all. So any ideas for my sedentary bass playing? Or will it just be put on the bass face? If anyone else has a Royal Wedding gig tomorrow then have fun and groove away! It's also put paid to my intentions to get a new Overwater/Tanglewood bass from the first batch.
