1.
I'm only now considering selling it as I'm not gigging as much now after leaving The Polis, so I've not advertised it anywhere..... D.
Oh, I see... I wish I had known. It'll sell in a heartbeat, 'though, I am sure. I kind of like the idea of owning the very amp I tried in the first place... ah well. So I never got to see The Polis!
 2. Happened to me a few times. It was the string. Once it was fixed by removing the string and winding it again... maybe it was twisted? The other times I ended up installing another string to cure it.
 3. I've had a VT-Bass pedal for quite a while (in fact, I used to own two v2 units, now I just own one with the Putnam mod adding a DI XLR socket to it). I go through phases where I think I don't really need it... and just before I am about to put it for sale, a situation arises where I need an overdrive pedal and this one just keeps coming with the right sounds. VT-bass: the pedal that refuses to go away.
 4. Get in touch with David Wilson... he is great to deal with and his work is impeccable. He's done work for a few well known artists, but his rates will be more attractive than you'd probably imagine. Still, my main reason to approach him is the quality of his work, not the cost. The cost is just a bonus. He's refinished a body for me, and cleaned/lacquered the maple neck of my Stingray... I would not go anywhere else. https://www.facebook...5970885&fref=nf edit: he's also a bass player
 5. Filling that gap will never be a good idea. It'll probably not look great without a lot of work and if you ever need to replace the pickup you'll curse. A lot. If replacing the pickup covers is not an option, and it looks like it would be risky in your case... do you really need those pickups? I'd choose another set that sounds good which you can replace pickup covers on. There's lots of pickups out there that would fit the bill and look just right.
 6.
If you cover Hawkwind, King Crimson and Van der Graaf Generator, the pubs might hate it, but I'd come and see you!
I'll let you know!
 7.
Mine is for sale.....
Really??? nooo! I was looking for a used one to save a bit of cash as these beasts are not cheap! I could not find one... Eventually I went for a D800+... which is nice as I like the HPF (the semiparametric controls are a bonus but not necessary, as the D800 works very well as it is, as I found out... but I would have absolutely gone for your D800 had I known. Is it advertised here? How did I miss it???
 8.
Brilliant! You couldn't make these things up could you? We play at a venue where the undertaker from next door always turns up, he's got a bit of a wandering hand when it comes to the young ladies he pushes by which inevitably ends up with a fight! ps-Estamos en españa ahora, mi espanol es más mejor como el año pasado. La picina, mis revistas, unas cervezas y helados ¡Perfecto!
Rub it in, won't you!!!??? (scottish weather... ugh) Espero que lo estes pasando bien It sounds like you are.
 9.
I've seen footage of a live band where some total idiot ended up on the Mic right at the front, just stood there he was glaring at everyone, obviously he couldn't hold a tune for his life once he inevitably tried to join in with the band, no one tried to stop him or anything. Turned out to be Oasis
!!!! a few weeks ago with my RATM band, a drunk guy jumped onstage... there was no mic for him as the guitarist was right infront of his and the singer had his in his hand... started jumping about with the singer, who humoured him for a bit... but he was getting a bit out of hand and I moved towards them to block him from getting into my not small pedalboard... then singer managed to get rid off him. We thought that was it. It wasn't. He proceeded to take his willy out and pee on the dance floor... Glad he didn't do it onstage or I might be typing this from prison.
 10. I just bought a Boss Chorus pedal from Dave. It arrived quickly, safe, great condition, no fuss. Very pleased. Thank you, Dave
 11.
Loads of Hawkwind, King Crimson and Van der Graaf Generator tunes to choose from. Guaranteed floor-fillers down the Dog & Duck
We don't play the Dog & Duck anymore. It's the Tickled Trout or better now.
 12.
The Led Zeppelin Story.....unplugged. https://www.facebook...30639227005478/ They are playing Motherwell Concert Theatre in August. I know they've played Glasgow various venues recently but not sure about Edinburgh. Dave
That's very cool, thank you!
 13.
[Whimpers] Sorry. I wont do it again, just please stop subztituting zeds for esses and I'll promise. I am scared of getting beaten up by h4x0rs and script kiddies.
14.
I dunno. You lot. If you don't like it - tough. It's that or do all of your shopping in high street retail outlets where customer service is still put into practice. I agree it's good to be informative with potential buyers but remember a lot of sellers are saying the same sort of things about buyers.
Now now, don't come round here and talking all reasonable and stuff, this is the interwebz!
 15.
Translates it into French as 'Hasta la vista!'..! Very useful.
literally it's "until the view"... meaning "until we see each other again" really. Just a very general goodbye.
 16.
This has been an unexpected bonus of moving to in-ears - it saved me from pissed punters three times last weekend... Although the best one was the hammered girl at a Rugby Club do, who did the clicky-finger thing in front of me during a Foo Fighters song, got annoyed when I didn't instantly devote all my attention to her, then demanded Abba. I politely declined with a "Sorry, we don't do any Abba" to have her point at the Mac on the mixer (we run Mainstage) and insist "No, play Abba." This we repeated this exchange three times until it was clear she wasn't going to understand we weren't some sort of iPod, so I said "Fine, yeah", and she went away. I told our singer, and he introduced the next song with "Not a lot of people know this, but the next one was originally recorded by Abba. This is Rosanna, as covered by Toto..."
Brilliant! We had a group of drunk guys (on a pub crawl, they seemed) once coming up and yelling for "Wonderwall". We play originals, a mix of ska/funk/somethingelse. So the singer got tired of that nonsense and announced the the next song as "Wonderwall, by Oasis", to be received with huge grins by the group... and we played another of our songs instead. It was amusing to see over the first few bars to see their grin turn into complete confusion... and then they yelled again but they now knew they'd just be ignored so they stopped and just danced with the rest
 17.
I like talking with punters about bass during downtime - especially if they actually have knowledge of the subject!
I met my girlfriend that way she wanted to know how I played some part of a song (she was trying to learn our songs at home from our CD)... so you never know!
 18.
Cheers. The more I think about it, the more it makes sense. If the saxophonist is doing the serious business for the band and he's good at dropping in and out where the tune demands, he'd make an ideal band co-ordinator/leader. I don't know or want to know the proposed politics of the band as that's such a personal thing but if it means the bass player has not got to do all the leg work it's a winning idea.
That's pretty much how it would be. I mean, I do have a few contacts around here so I'll deal with a couple of places for sure (I take care of booking gigs at a few places with my other bands), but he's the guy who would get us the gigs and he's good at it. He gets his commission, but he earns it! In the other band I'm in with him, the vast majority of the gigs are booked by him (I only book a few and nobody else books anything). It's a nice little extra earner for him, and we would not have those gigs at all without him, so it's good. He likes that sort of thing which I'm happy to let others do...
 19.
Let us know if the band gets gigs as far south as Swarkestone Bridge then. Sounds like a worthy project.
It looks a little far, as the plan is gigs within a couple hours of Edinburgh or so... but with the other band we go down to England a lot, through the sax player's contacts, so who knows? Maybe some day go on a little excursion nearer you... if it happens I'll let you know
 20.
Thin Lizzie have the odd bit of Sax on there, and I could see AC/DC It's A Long Way To The Top with sax replacing the bagpipes, and there's a lot of stuff that has horn sections on the odd song (some Aerosmith, Chili Peppers) and some that have horn sections in the band (Rocket From the Crypt, Mighty Mighty Bosstones if they're not too ska). And beyond that I reckon you can get away with new arrangements with non-original instrumentation, as long as you're doing it really well (and that's the test...). Maybe don't sell the set as being sax based and see whether the punters think it's a nice surprise... For song choice, my last covers lot were doing hard rock/metal but with an emphasis on doing stuff that wasn't cliche'd or that every other hard rock/metal covers band would do - the "No Paranoid" rule. Basically so that we wouldn't get bored, but always stuff that we thought the crowd would know. So we'd do a Metallica song but it would be Master Of Puppets rather than Enter Sandman, Neon Knights rather than Paranoid, Touch Too Much rather than Whole Lotta Rosie, etc. Specifically stuff that any punter who was going to see a metal covers lot would know and like, but didn't usually get to hear. We only ever played a handful of gigs (and split up due to lead guitarist issues when we were gearing up to make a proper push on getting gigs) but the ones we did play went down really well, and always the same feedback - "it's really nice to hear somebody playing stuff that isn't the same set that everybody else plays" So i reckon you can get away with some more unusual/less obvious song choices if the crowd are there to hear that sort of a thing in the first place. We reckoned that our audience would probably know 60-80% of what we played, and only played stuff by very well known bands - it was never "here's Meanstreak by Y&T which you won't remember but you'll love once you hear it" it was "here's a less obvious song by Anthrax or Megadeth or Iron Maiden". And we structured the set so that if there was one song that we knew would be less well known, we followed it up by a more well known one so there weren't whole passages in the evening where everybody would be scratching their heads.
Indeed, there are a lot of songs that can lend themselves easily to a bit of sax here and there. Thin Lizzy's "Dancing in the moonlight" is a favourite of the sax guy, and mine (it was one of my favourite guitar solos to play back when I played more guitar than I do now)... I think you got the right idea: not to play obscure songs, but try to play the ones that are still popular just not covered by everybody. We don't plan to sell it as "look, rawk with sax!", just as a normal rocky covers type of thing... but then you'll find the lineup cotains a sax. Some bands get remembered because they have that pretty girl on drums. We have a[s]n ugly[/s] dude on sax
 21.
Just out of curiosity, why isn't the squier a "proper" jazz bass?
yes, why? I'd say go around and try all the basses you can. I have owned many Jazz basses, including several Fender 75RI, a roadworn, and others. I only kept one, the one I liked best... it's an old battered '94 Made in Korea Squier (replaced the electronics, but the bass itself cost me £75 used). Sometimes best is not the most expensive. Basses vary so much, that buying an expensive model does not mean you'll get a better instrument than a lower one. Yes, your chances are a lot higher and they're build with better components... but it pays to shop around to find one that 'talks to you', and if it ends up being a lower end one, you know you can replace any parts that let it down easily.
 22.
Avoiding such messing around is one of the reasons I play a 5 string.
but sometimes (many examples) you really want to take advantage of an open D... so I'd even detune to D on a 5 string.
 23.
Sounds like he's going to get an easy ride compared to the rest of the band. Does he not do BVs?
Well, somebody has to drink the beers that accumulate onstage
 24.
My mates band is a Led Zep tribute act for about 10-12 yrs now and they decided to acoustic set with Singer, guitar on mainly acoustic and bring in a female backing vocalist and two cello players with quite different techniques. One being very classical trained and sticks to the music note for note (i'm exaggerating a bit) and the other is more able to ad-lib as and when required. When he told me this set up i thought it would be a disaster but it was an absolutely fantastic gig and extremely entertaining so my advice is to give it a shot and see how it goes. Dave
That sounds pretty cool, actually! What are they called? If they play around here I'd like to see them.
 25.
The girl who plays sax in The Zutons is quite cute.
Not sure this applies here (sorry Peter )
