Andy
2. I bought my TB from Andy67 here on basschat and I believe he had a Dimarzio Model One fitted to it before I bought it. Might be worth dropping him a message to see how well that fitted and how it sounded? Andy

4. Hi Folks, I have almost finished cleaning my 78 precision up ready for painting and have a question. The body is sprayed with an acrylic (waterbased) sanding sealer. I would like to respray the body in a transparent red finish and then clear lacquer on top of this. Unfortunately, I can only get the trans red finish in Nitro but I normally use a waterbased clear coat. Are there any problems using : Waterbased sealer then Nitro colour coat then Waterbased clear coat? Or do I need to use a nitro clear coat on top of the nitro colour coat? I've had a search around on the web and in the Stewart-McDonald refinishing book but couldn't find an answer. Any ideas? Thanks Andy

7. That looks great - seems a shame to hide the wood! Looking forward to seeing it completed Andy
8. I use the procell PP3's for most things - radio systems, basses, effects etc and find them pretty good as they are rebranded Duracell. Expect to pay around £10 to £12 + Post for £10. I usually get mine from CPC (www.cpc.co.uk) when I'm ordering other bits Andy
9. Mine was a Peavey Milestone 1 - basically a Jazz Bass copy. Played it for a few years when I was a student before I sold it to a jazz musician who I believe is still using it now (I think I sold it in 1998 - I know I bought a Squier Musicmaster later that year!) Andy
10. Update 20-06-08 After many hours of sanding I have most of the front and back down to bare wood, or so I thought! I suspect that after 1 factory finish and at least 2 refinishes there is so much paint/sanding sealers/etc in the grain that I would have to sand a fair bit out of the wood to get a finish suitable for staining so I am looking at giving up on the transparent/wine red and going with the natural finish. Having given the front and back a very light wipe with a damp cloth the grain looks good so I suspect the natural will look good. Still a lot of sanding to do as I haven't got the whole back down to bare(-ish) and still have the edges to do. Whatever the clear finish was, it stinks pretty badly as you sand it! Most of the sanding has been done by hand or with a detail sander but the original Fender finish was scraped off with a screwdriver then sanded. Andy
11.
Here's my old setup... loved it to bits and it never let me down. Alas, it got too much like hard work carting it to gigs and so I had to sell it on a few months back to a lovely lady from London. I hope she's taking good care of it... Now using a Hughes & Kettner BK300
I gigged with a peavey 2x15 and head for a while - I got my rig for free from a band I worked with as they couldn't lift it - the 2x15 was referred to as "the wardrobe"! Sounded great but way too heavy - I ended up cutting the 2x15 down to a 1x15 and selling the rig for £50. Andy
12. I'm looking at refinishing my 1978 Fender precision in wine red but it seems to be a fairly rare colour. I'm trying to get an idea of how the bass in this colour looks and how dark the red is (and is it solid or transparent?). Anyone fancy sticking some photos of theirs up to give me an idea? Thanks Andy
13. I bought a Fender thumbrest recently and it came with this useful diagram for the Precision and Jazz basses : Hope this is useful Andy
14. That has been hacked around a bit! Neck looks OK - early 76 serial (starts 76 rather than S6) and looks like schaller heads but the rest looks a mess - Hacked body and scratchplate to fit the two jazz pickups and the extra control. Bridge looks too shiney to be original. Nice amount of mojo to the body though! I suspect that his start price is a bit too high for the amount of mods. Andy
15. Just taken delivery of a part-reel of multicore from Jake - excellent guy to deal with. Andy
16. A few weeks ago I bought a 1978 Fender precision bass from Volume on the board here as a project. As it arrived it looked like this : I started by stripping the bass down to see what was there. S/N on the head is S87xxxx which would date it to 1978. Pickups are dated 10/08/78 and 17/10/78 Pots are dated 1377808 which decodes to Week8, 1978 Neck stamp is very faded but appears to read 01032485 which is Week 24, day 5, 1978 All of the body markings are missing except for some stamps in the pickup cavity which are the same as the stamps on the neck (round stamp which I assume is quality control. Neck is straight and cleaned up nicely with just a few minor dings here and there. All the hardware looks right although the thumbrest and pickup/bridge covers are missing (I'll use reissue ones for these). The body is another matter : Originally Sunburst, it has been partially stripped and resprayed blue, the partially stripped again and a very thin clear coat put on. Basically my project is to sand the body back down to bare (except the pickup cavity which I will preserve to keep the stamps intact) and respray the body. For 1978, authentic colours would be Black, White, Sunburst, Natural or transparent Red. Depending on how well the wood cleans up I am planning to go for either Natural or the much rarer transparent red. I'll update as I make progress - I suspect that stripping the various layers of paint off may take a while! Andy
17. I decided to spend some time fiddling with the software (version 1.40) - I fiddled with the compatibility modes (right click on the application > settings > compatability) and when I changed it from win98 to windows 2000 and restarted the editor it worked! I hate it when it is something that simple! Andy
18.
Ashdown do here (pointing to this download file). Was it the laptop you connected to before? You're not going via any hubs or switches are you? And, er, you have got the MIDI/USB switch switched to USB, haven't you?
I tried the Ashdown site already and the link comes up "page cannot be found" - I emailed Ashdown and they say that version 1.31 is no longer available and to use version 1.40 which should work! The superfly is plugged straight into the laptop - the laptop sees the superfly but the editor software won't connect to it. I've tried using the compatability mode (telling the application it's running in windows 98) but that hasn't helped either. Andy
19. Often on boards I hear that 70s Fender Precisions (and Jazz) are heavier than 60s or 80s ones. I understand that Fender was less picky about the wood they used in the 70s but what is defined as light and/or heavy? (Embarassingly - I'm asking this now having been a guitar tech for the last 10 years!) Thanks Andy
20. Hi Folks, I am trying to connect my superfly to my xp laptop and am struggling. I previously had it working with version 1.31 of the software but that isn't available anymore and I can't get version 1.40 to work. Does anyone have a copy of version 1.31 that I can try to see if it works? Thanks Andy

25. I know a few people here like the Squier Musicmasters and the seem pretty rare so here's a heads up : Musicmaster Bass Not my auction and I daren't bid on it having bought two basses this year already!
