1. I swap from fingered to pick, does that count?
2. That all sounds so simple yet Im sure we have all seen big name bands with awful bass sounds especially once they start to use fx? Im not saying I have a fix for it, Im just saying it happens to the best so what chance have we got.
3. No I think it went sold as seen needing a lot of work to put right for about £950 ish Bass Doc might know more? It had a 3 band preamp and all sorts of issues, I think my plan was to buy it and have the body put right then wait to find the correct bits over the years, but how long would it take to locate a '76 preamp? I can see a mint all original '76 with a period case going for £3500 at a dealer, the only reason thats not a common occurance is that they dont really come up do they? A rough '76 has got to be £2k really so its hard to put a value on, this is exactly how expensive collectable stuff starts, like Noel says its expensive so he looks around to find another, looks at one for £1500 and realises its not a '76 but by then has his heart set on a '76 so starts looking some more, by then the only one is a mint one from a collecatble bass dealer with all the receipts and as much proof as possible that its the real deal just in case he wants to sell it on at alater date, by then it £2.5 - 3K. Lots of people see them going for that price which drags the bottom of the market up and the really rough ones get made in to fake '76s which entice people in only to realise they are fake, but by then they have their heart set on a '76 and so it continues! .......look at Fenders.
4.
That's what rehearsals are for. If you're too dumb to be able to sort out a little thing like level matching them you're probably too dumb to be in a band.
Even if you were lucky enough to play a full run through at a massive venue which unless you are the headline act at a big paying gig rather than a pub band once it was full of people it would sound totally different, I think calling someone dumb for that is harsh. Its nothing to do with level matching, I used to use FX and get all my levels spot on, but the different types of venue made them all to cock, if it was as simple as just watching the little red lights and make sure they are all peaking to the same level we would all be sound engineers.
5. See I dont like Muse for all the tinkering around, it fine in the studio and sure Im not saying you have to have one sound and no fx but just as you think man that bass sounds great the next song starts and its too quiet or too loud or does not cut through etc
6.
Great tone served up in a nice clean signal. Players who constantly tinker with the sound throughout a gig are a nuisance tho.
This is why for me unless the player does something really important with his actual amp sounds (very rare and still no matter how nerdy the bass player its still coming from the PA) then a clean DI is always for the win, even then an active bass can make some fairly big adjustments to the sound if they meddle alot.
7. Sounds complicated Even after all that its still coming out of the PA and if the sound engineer mixes you a sh*t sound you have, well, a sh*t sound
8. Thats all too true mate and keep away from motorbikes!
9.
No offence to the seller, but starting bids of £1,900 for a butchered '76, that's a bit rich, isn't it?
Well its like anything whats a none butchered '76 worth? Thats about top money for a clean later one maybe like mine so it depends on if you want a mint 77 or later or a mint but none original '76? Also this one is from a known source and is being sold as what it is, once it has been sold this time any later sales might not be so honest anyway. It was the one I was thinking of then Bass Doc, from what it cost needing work and the work thats been done I'd say the price is more than fair, that does not garantee a sale obviously but I can see how that has stacked up
10. I used to think like that and declared it quite clearly then I changed my mind and decided It was something I would like to do as did a few others and this thread was born, If you can already read but play instictively you are all the proof we need that it need not be the case to lose any natural feel if you can read when your not
11.
Where do these deaf moron sound men come from? They'd never consider doing that to any other instrument (especially guitars) so why is it considered OK to treat the bass guitar that way? I must be lucky because in 30+ years of gigging I've never had the misfortune to come across one of these idiots. If I did I would ask to see what effects they had in their PA rack and then ask how good their psychic powers were to enable them to switch on and off drive, chorus and timed delay to match what I was doing with my rig.
I really dont see this as a problem, If your using effects then you just put all that before the DI if its all amp based effects and the infamous 'your amps tone' then unless everyone at the venue can hear your rig as 100% backline then most your sound is still coming from the PA system. Flea has 1 of his 1x10s mic'd up out of 16 10's and 3 15's how much of what the audience hear is anything like what he can hear on stage?
12. I still don't really need to read, I don't really need to play at all I guess as I'm only a hobby player like a lot of us on bass chat, shame there's not more hours in the day to do everything we would like to do. I can't see any mojo being lost because you can read, maybe a bit while your reading but unless your sight reading you can put your own mojo back in after you have learnt the piece.
13. As long as could hear myself it would be fine with me, people worry to much about getting their exact tone they have spent ages perfecting in the spare room reproduced on stage and out front of house IMO. So what if you have got a coupe of barefaced cabs and a 1000watt head it's still no match for £20k+ of pa system
14.
I bought a brand new 4 string classic ash/maple a few months ago but I've been playing the Steinberger and Precision with the band. Think it's still got the plastic bags over the tuners and pickguard. It's hardly been out of the case. It has the Louis Johnson vibe with black guard. If anybody is looking for an 'as new' classic £1200 + delivery will seal it... pm me if you are interested.
If only it had 5 strings
15.
Not too bad then. Still, you'll probably feel it for a day or two eh.
Just got in from the pub, the aches and pains are kicking in now!
16. Just a hedge in my way, about 25-30 mph! Bike has a few light scuffs and I have a few aches but I cant complain, It could of been much worse for either me, the bike or both of us. My mate has been and helped me put it all back together and a bit of T cut here and there has got it looking good, couldn't of happened to the 12 year old bike I traded in for it a month ago though could it!
17.
it´s very similar. I also had the original 2EQ from my Stingray in an OLP, I had a SUB5 with 2 band EQ, and I have a 4 string SUB too... I guess that´s just how I like it!
I need to try one of these pre amps, why do you live so far away?!
18. Fell off my motorbike earlier!, when the Wife finds out I might just have the funds for a Classic5 after all!
19. Good post 4000 A lot of my fave players also sound and play nothing like me (lucky for them ) but I know exactly what your saying, I love Duff and his P bass special sound, I love John Deacon who plays nothing like me nor do I try and emulate,If anything I have been compared to muse before and Im not really a fan of their work as such, dont hate them but I dont own any tracks by them.
20. Here you go http://basschat.co.uk/topic/111038-bass-clef-yts/page__hl__yts
21. Just a bump really to see if anyone else has stuck with it? Im still very average but If someone asked me if I can read I can now say "yes". Just managed great wizard on the clef game and dipping in and out of my books when I get time. I am doing a few dep gigs at the moment and its been handy for learning the little bits and bobs of songs.
22.
I haven't but I believe I will start. I want to start getting into reading music.
We had a bass clef YTS thread a while ago, but I think I was the only one that kept it up? Its worth a read though, I will find it for you.
23. Done it 1 second dead! Off for a dog walk now....
24. http://www.studybass.com/tools/bass-clef-notes/ I have not been on it for ages and cant get the top score of great wizard, just a regular wizard with a 1.1. I have done it before so either the dogs go for a walk or I sit here until its done.......
