    My mate calls them “scratch guards”. Makes me feel sick.

    My wife also calls the glove compartment of a car The drop down.

    Also makes me feel sick.

    And when Chocolate is shortened to Choc.

    rancid.

    I generally use pickguard.

    You need to have a word Andy. Unless you keep lots of menus in your glove compartment, ‘drop down’ is not a suitable nomenclature. Pretty sure ‘scratch guard’ is a thing, just not what your mate is referring to. Choc? Yep, that’s just wrong 😂

    EDIT: I think ‘Choccy’ is acceptable though?

    Wow - who's that, Warren?😥

    Nat. Broken foot. Query broken hand. Requires surgery on her hip.

    She’s OK. Hospital messed her about a bit with the x-rays. Car is a write off though. Happened a few weeks ago, so no immediate cause for concern. Just need to get her fixed 😀

    There have been gigs in France since last week. We were booked for last Friday (26th) It was cancelled, but only due to impending bad weather.

    Ah, sorry man. Didn’t realise you were abroad. Very pleased you’ve managed a gig tho mate. I know it was down on audience numbers, but I bet it felt great didn’t it - to be out there again?

  4. I’ve requested a postponement of our October gig as I don’t think standing gigs will be particularly popular even then. Adjourned until July 2021. Everything else for 2020 has been cancelled by the venue. I’m resigned to not gigging this year. One of the band has been involved in a serious road traffic collision and will require surgery in the last half of 2020. Date TBC.

    All a bit crappy really. I look forward to a few productive rehearsals where we can work on some obscure Bowie back catalogue.

    Started again,  at 9.00pm Last night. (Friday) Just got in. Resaurant/bar gig, outside, about half as many as we usually pull in there so punters being hesitant.

    Went down well, got fed, got paid.

    Not back to normal, but it's a start.

    I’m a bit confused as to how this occurred. I thought tomorrow was the kick off?

    Avg = 4.3 / 5

    Excellent = 92%
    Bad = 8%

    Good. That’s seen the ‘Jonas’ the door then.

    I don’t know whether it’s a spurious camouflaged complaint from someone who has ended up at the sticky end of a Mod or one of those random people that seem to enjoy complaining about everything without provocation. He/she probably works for FedEx. Apparently the Washington Redskins have been ‘told’ to consider renaming the team. “Reconsider” as in ‘if you don’t, we will withdraw our sponsorship’.

    The European name of the first Native American to address Congress is coincidentally ‘Red Jacket’

    I took the easy way out and bought the Phil Jones Bass ones, they sound great for about £70.

    I think I might buy a pair of them. My current ones are on their way out and they don’t make them any more 😬.

    (Panasonic RP-HT X7’s - actually, I think the model continues, but the new ones are not the same)

    My "superior" ears have been decidedly inferior since the first concert I attended, which was Motörhead in 1979!
    I'm just reacting to what I am hearing (from a pair Yamaha monitors, not headphones).
    What I often find with these A/B tests is that, although one might be able to detect a difference of sorts, both sounds are excellent and my preference would be for whatever instrument (a) costs less (b) feels nicer to play or, and this is the most likely, (c) is the best colour.

    Strangely enough, Lemmy and Co were responsible for most of my hearing loss. I remember seeing them at Hammersmith in 1970something and there was a bloke at the front with his head IN one of the bass bins. I often wonder if he is still alive. Here I am at the front at Brixton seen on their ‘25 & Alive’ DVD (I’m the one with the white t-shirt underneath my newly acquired gig shirt).

    I should also say that the Moollon is a little bit louder too, not by much, but it's audible. I matched the levels in Logic as best I could to keep it purely about tone.

    Si

    ...and it is, as they say, ALL about the tone.

    Thanks so much Si for taking the time to do it. You suggested you would and I didn’t want to nag you.

    Great playing as well by the way.

    I just spec'd my old bass up again, and give or take a few quid, it came to £1299. Glad I gave them a try when I did haha

    Mmm, that is a bit of a leap, but as a business model, I think they have done the right thing. They made quality basses for a really good price some years back and have gradually increased their prices whilst clearly maintaining their sales (and quality). I’m sure they are carefully monitoring price against sales so one does not impact on the other. Still competitive and I guess Moollon is they one they should be watching. I wonder how much impact the UK coming out of Europe has had.

    Tone full: The Moollon sounded brighter but I guess that could be the strings? Basic tone was almost identical to my old, knackered ears and both are brilliant, classic P-bass tones with the Moollon winning out because it sounds so plummy and round, yet super articulate.

    Tone off: The Fender had the edge here for me, sounding a bit punchier, with the Moollon smoother and darker overall. If forced to guess why, I'd suggest a more harsh treble cut from the capacitor (maybe a different value) but it might be down to other factors I suppose. Probably academic as the slightest little bit of an adjustment to open the Moollon's tone control a tiny bit would probably equalise the difference.

    Please take all this with a pinch of salt as I'm no expert. What I did hear were great P-bass tones played really well. It's making me want a P, despite my (admittedly cheaper) two basses both having a P pickup. They're close but don't seem to do that classic 70s P sound I hear on so many funk and jazz records.

    I should add that my hearing is partially fecked, so I bow to your superior ears 😀
