  1. That first clip was amazing you can actually see the D string oscillate to the frequency of the note as a sine wave up and down the board, the scale length of the double bass adds so much to the sound and harmonics, just cannot be duplicated on a 34" electric, however much we try and boy I have tried most things. great clips thanks for sharing
  2. Great bass sounds available, nearest i have ever got to an upright. seeing The Squaronaires bass player use it live made me get one. Sort of Royal approval to play synthesized electric bass in a Big Band Have a bump from him 43 sec in https://youtu.be/0sfnAvFzDjw
  3. There are some very good players in the former Yugoslav' countries, great jazz festivals too and bar music to be found, on talking to the bands many of them are working the Croatian coast because that's where the work is and they are in Europe. It also attracts many eastern European muso's as well who can drive down there. I'm booked up for another holiday and will be enjoying their local wine and Jazz again this year enjoyed the clip, have always loved local traditional music - a good find - he knows his way round that bass I must check out these guys when i am there at some point http://www.wreckguitars.hr/
  4. As i have a very nice picture of mine waiting for me under a spot - I'll share the moment with you. and i played a blinder
  5. I didn't really hear anything as you described, But look into what Howie suggested, but also is the bridge saddle screws making good contact with the base plate, some saddles i feel are too close together and if one screw is up and one down the saddle wants to twist and the saddle either side prevents this and the result is poor contact on one screw only. This alters the tone. just go over all the little Allen keys with a light touch to check if they are all taking the same strain. Good luck.
  6. could be a loose wrap, I have had this and returned them to Rotosound, they will deny problems exist as all manufacturers will, but probably replace it FOC. If you don't wish to do this - could try twisting the string from the headstock end in the direction of the wrap with the ball end in the bridge and refit silk end to tuner. I know this is what you try and avoid doing when putting on new strings but it may prove a point. I have done this just one full rotation seems to do the trick.
  7. "A happy wife is a happy life" an awful lot of truth in that
  8. took her to see Donny and Marie at Bournemouth, there were loads of old people there with grey hair, I went to the loo looked in the mirror thought mmmm snap
  9. I am with Grandad and Ed. If you are in the business off entertaining, Customer satisfaction should be your main focus, If you are playing for money you are by definition "professional" even if just that night. So you should collectively sound, look and present yourself professionally. On and off stage. OK so you look and sound good on your web site, you now have one foot in the door to being booked Do you then turn up like the cowboy builder with a smoking 25 year old transit van and gear with knotted leads and cables pulled out the terminals. Its like a cowboy plumber who puts his tool box down in your kitchen and says "cuppa tea would be nice love" Would you be happy with the builders bum ripped jeans and rusty tools or would you rather pay the professional going rate for a Corgi registered guy trained and insured. Pat testing is about demonstrating you have a risk assessed approach to safety of electrical apparatus that can be damaged because it is portable. An extension lead under your computer desk is unlikely to get damaged so a competent person could judge it be tested 3 yearly. But an extension lead used on stage each week will work harden so the cores will stiffen and break over time. people will stand on it and it will be run over and pinched by heavy objects. I have probably said enough, I am a spark i have bought my own PAT tester to do band kit, so i don't kill someone, I have public liability insurance so if a drunk at a wedding knocks the PA over on to someones Granny I'm covered. Ain't aint cheap to run a gigging band that cares
  10. Is this a physical issue, as above - technique or maybe high action and pressure required left hand, or you have fallen out of love with your bass and hand issues have convinced you a change is required. My only advice would be get another bass player friend to look at the set up action does this need attention. Now for La Bella white nylons, I have just put these on my Status electro having had the blacks on for a year or more. These are great strings and did make a real difference to my bass but make sure the action is low so the tension and compression in the neck from bridge to nut is under control, i believe these made the bass sound better. If the action is wrong too high the neck will bend and take all the strain and sound and action will be even worse. This goes for any type of string but more important with heavy higher tension sets.
  11. Some good points you are making ref the gear we can justify. Like most here, GAS has taken hold at times and I have always bought basses i like or lust after that may have led people at times to assume i am a better player than i am. It is in the back of your mind. But whether bass, Amp or Cab I feel, if i have eliminated the gear from the equation - bought the best, I can't blame it. I am then only crap because i have not practiced enough. I have also talked myself out of getting the latest gear and to spending the money on Lessons. but it doesn't last long
  12. Now there's a sideline, Tornado shelters in Orange
  13. There's a thought if you can't sell your gear on here, just find a local disaster spot and go lay down your gear and take a few shots and claim on the insurance
  14. I came across this about a year ago via a Buddy Rich composition video with Hakim on drums - so here you go 4 masters - Bass players not bad. do wait for the bass solo https://youtu.be/JixfzsQWZ8c
  15. Thats the first time i have listened to Demons eye in over 40 years, but i can now hear how and why I found and got into Led Zep after that, that sort of incidental rambling vocal commentary at the end that runs under the band, not sure its supposed to feature as a main lyric really, it seems to be a very British Prog Rock style other bands adopted too.
  16. At some point the room acoustics will bite back, its recognising when that point has been reached and all being aware what needs to be done to bring the offending frequencies under control. if you cross the line and take no action the bands performance as a whole will be seriously compromised. Nice to hear so many of you have found bands and people you can work with to produce music you can be proud of.
  17. The bass player has left the building
  18. Demon's eye was always mine - it was a B side of Fireball so was accessible on the pub juke boxes and i think my most selected song ever. If you were ever in White's Bar Oxford in about 72
  19. Having posed the question of large powered bass amps on another thread, and if we really need this much power. some of you, I accept may do The next obvious question for debate is are you happy with stage volumes on gigs. has everything got out of hand. Who decides when enough is enough. Have you been in a band where you feel you are all too loud only for someone to use band funds to buy an even larger fold back system. How many times do you feel sick due to volume, or just miserable enough for it to show in your performance because one or more members is on a mission Do you feel you have lost punters or gigs through volume - when do you decide to walk or take the sensible guys with you and start over. Over to you
  20. Yes yes and yes Chienmortbb my man spot on
  21. Very important pedal in Compressor history, I couldn't find one anywhere when looking so I bought the EBS which is based on the same need to address high and low peaks differently. Grab yourself this baby while you can. A compressed Bimp from me for a great pedal
  22. So we now have agreement we can gig happily with our old 1960's / 70s combo rigs at 60 to 100 watt if we can get the guitarist ('s) to play to a reasonable level. Keyboard players will also be limited to a mono 60 watt combo with left hand cable tied behind their back. Now we need to do something with that Kw of fold back.
  23. I agree with all your sentiments as Bass players we need headroom and so should have special dispensation from the environmental lobby to pack a reserve amount of wattage over and above the Guitar and Keyboard. On the grounds of enjoyment (need to feel the Bass). So maybe we limit guitarist watts to 30. I feel another thread coming on.
  24. I am just picturing you switching on your amp last, and all the venue lights dim and the fruit machines re boot up and his valve amp jumps back into standby mode.
  25. I remember doing the Queens hall Dunstable with a pair of Wem column speakers and a Wem 6 channel mixer, Don't think they heard us
