1. Biggest thing is DR Fatbeam strings, pricey but they last for ages so they're actually pretty good value for money. Hi Beams are also close, just a little brighter. A Sadowsky preamp helps, I've got one of the old outboard ones with just bass, treble and volume but it adds fatness and helps to push any Fender Jazz towards the Marcus Miller sound. Medium weight ash body Jazz basses seem to me to be the best choice but any Jazz type bass will get close with Fat Beams. I don't think changing the bridge to a high mass one like a Badass makes much difference, he also has a 70s pickup and a vintage 60s pickup (can't remember which was changed for a vintage, possibly the bridge?) Again, I don't think it makes a huge difference. The rest is in his fingers, phrasing and note choices, good luck with that!
2.
Yeah I've ordered some, just worried they won't be snug in the holes. Thanks though, I will try the cocktail sticks!
I generally use match sticks as they're a bit softer.
3. I typed "Guitar Tuner Screws" into eBay, plenty of choices and not expensive
4. Take a look at the grooves on almost any bridge, it just has to be deep enough to stop the string moving from side to side. It's more of a problem on the bridge as plucking hard could pull the string out of the groove, less of a problem at the nut. I agree an adjustable nut is a bit unnecessary and I had one for a while, set it once and never adjusted it again. Pretty pointless IMO.
5. Hard to explain in words, but I know what I mean! I'm playing strictly alternating finger but I'm playing two notes with the first finger by raking. First time round you'll need to play the root with your 1st finger but then: The first of the octaves with the 2nd finger. The second of the octaves and the root in one movement with the first finger. etc. That might be even more confusing than what I wrote before
6.
I just tried it at 100 bpm (what bpm is it at?) I went for low F# with my 1st finger then octave with my 2nd then 1st to finish and repeat.
Have a go at doing the 1st finger stuff in one raking motion (muting the A string so it doesn't sound) and your 1st finger is in position to play the low note again. It turns it into a sort of rakey galloppy 1>2>1>2 alternating finger line rather than a 1>2>1>1>2>1 line. Oddly I find it hard slowed down but up to the tempo of the song it's easier. Edit: I'm guessing BPM is around 125 to 130ish
7.
Don't think I've ever tried to continue eating, while fending anyone off lol .......
There is such a thing as a free lunch
8. I'm pretty relaxed about being left handed in a right handed world, with the exception of scissors. It's easy to make scissors that are comfortable in either hand ( I have a couple of pairs), why limit your market and make them really uncomfortable for left handers? I've seen plenty of right handers swap to their left hand to snip something that's awkward to reach with their right hand. Oh, and cheque books. Why not bind them across the top so the stub doesn't get in the way of either hand?
9. Yup, time flies! Your old red P bass is my favourite Precision by a distance, it's a tone machine and a joy to play. I think I worked out the date on the neck stamp, it decodes to an early '72. The body must be after late '74 due to thumbrest position although I read somewhere that Candy Apple Red was discontinued by Fender in '73 so something's not right there. Neck plate is late '75 or '76, pots '73 but from different batches. No wonder you couldn't date it accurately, I reckon it's got to be a bitsa, and possibly a refinish. It's a great bass though so I'm very happy with it, my search for a P bass is over. Still can't chose between the two Jazzes you played, they're both exactly what I want from a Jazz bass. I generally go for the one that has the freshest strings, which is the chicken coloured one at the moment All the best to you and your family, I think if you traded them for basses you'd probably regret it
10.
God's Teeth! Will you all stop calling her "You Tube Girl"! Her name is Marta Altesa. She's really rather good, isn't she?
Sorry Spidy dancy bloke.
11.
This works for me as well, I will keep increasing the tempo until I can play it slightly faster than needed - which makes it seem easier at the required tempo.
And for the gig when the drummer counts the band in 20 bpm too fast
12. Yup, I saw a Youtube video of a Spanish girl playing this tune and thought it'd be fun to play, after all, she's only been playing a couple of years, I've been playing a couple of decades and can play most things without too much practice etc.etc. And found I couldn't even begin to play it at any kind of speed. I think it's a fairly unusual pattern that I've just never encountered before, so now I've been playing this tune a couple of times a day for the past couple of months (yes, that's about 8 weeks maybe more!) and I can just about hold it all together, sort of. But I very nearly gave up on it. Stick at it, practice really slow and look at different fingerings to find what works for you, I use first finger to pluck the E string, then 2nd > 1st again for the octaves on the D. And raking the 1st finger across the A and E strings to get back for the low note again (while muting the A string with my fretting hand). I tried three finger plucking Billy Sheehan style but that didn't sound right, thumb and two fingers was too cack handed, and pick was disastrous. You can try speeding up gradually but I found that was taking forever, so I ended up just going as fast as I could and relaxing, and hoped it would fall into place. And it does, eventually. Sort of. Good luck!
13. Welcome to Basschat! Nice basses as has been said above, the Washburn is probably quite unusual. I had one of those Aria 5 strings years ago, I've a feeling the string spacing is quite tight. Most 5 stringers are wider. Good luck if you decide to take up playing.
14. Wow, some changes since I saw you last year! Some great basses there. What's next on the shopping list?
15. Unfortunately I don't have an ohmmeter, I've twiddled and jiggled the pot to see if it cuts out or crackles so I'm pretty confident cleaning it won't help. Now it's a volume control it works smoothly and progressively so I think the pot is OK. I think I'll try the cap first, then the pot and if that doesn't work I'll borrow a meter and check the pickups. Thanks!
16. Wow, quick reply! Thanks for that, that's pretty much what I was thinking. I've got some spare caps and a soldering iron, and some plasters for when I burn my fingers! What could possibly go wrong? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rr7bPmGTQUk
17.
But then i would be playing right handed and there would still be no basses for me.
Now I understand why left handed people don't live so long
18. The tone control has packed up on my old Jazz bass (it's a volume, volume, tone), it seems to now cut the overall volume of the bass. My guess is the capacitor has failed, but could it be the pot? There are no crackles or cutting out, it's just not a tone control any more. I'd normally replace both pot and cap but it's the last remaining '73 pot in the bass so would like to keep it if it's still working.
19.
You are all traitors and the reason there is a limited amount of left handed basses.
Don't blame us, it's all the right handed players that should be playing left handed basses that are the problem
20.
I can only think of this happening to me once before (by the Scarbee Celinder) but today was totally out of the blue. While visiting a chap to trade a hard case for his compressor pedal, he let me play a p bass he put together himself (He'd mentioned it in our communications and that he liked working on guitars). It was without a doubt the finest p bass I've ever played, and I've had some nice basses through my hands. Being this guys personal labour of love, I know it'll never be mine and it's already driving me a bit mad! This ever happen to any of you?
P basses are simple machines, it's sometimes a few small tweaks than make a bass great. Why not get him to take a look at one of yours and see if he can add some magic to it?
21. There's loads of us on here, I sometimes think there are more lefties playing righty than lefties playing lefty. I tried both and found that having my more dexterous hand on the fingerboard made more sense.

IMO

Every post on any forum is mostly opinion. IMO.
23. The advantages of putting the screws in are you won't lose them. Also on some thinner finishes it's possible to catch the edge of the paint and flake a bit off, probably less likely with the screws in.
24. There was a thread on here about disinterestedness / unfriendliness at the Gallery a while back, basically Alex posted and apologized if he came across as grumpy but that his approach was to let people browse in peace. My first visit was the same, didn't feel like I wanted to give them my business. But then I went back when they had a used bass that was exactly what I was looking for and the service couldn't have been better. Been back quite a few times and they've always been great. They've got some amazing basses there so it's worth the effort in my opinion.
25. Another thumbs up for Wunjo. Seems like the rest of Denmark Street has upped it's game too, generally it seems a pretty friendly place to browse and buy. It used to be terrible, dunno how many of the shops stayed in business their service was so bad.
