Jazz body and Precision neck of unknown provenance (pretty sure not Fender, despite the headstock decal) -- described to me as 'Japanese' by the BCer who I got it from (who I believe did the assembly). Tuners and a 5 string conversion hardware are Wilkinson -- for those who haven't come across this before, the D string is anchored in the string retainer and you get an extra headless-style tuner at the bridge. It's a bit of a PITA to string but keeps tuning really well. Pickups are EMG -- you can just about see the logo where it's not been worn away, but not sure what model as there's no labels I can see. I think there's a 9V battery in there but I've not been into the cavity to check. The neck pickup needs some more material underneath it to bring it closer to the low strings -- I added some already but not enough, apparently. When I got it there was a lot of relief in the neck, which meant it played nicely at the nut end but the action quickly got very high. I've shimmed the neck, adjusted the truss rod and fitted a set of light Elixirs and it plays much better. I think it could really use a fret dress though, there's one low spot around the 14th fret that doesn't sound properly. String spacing is tight but not unreasonable, it's pretty similar to my 7 string bass. The body has it's fair share of knocks and dings, which I've documented in the photos. The pickguard has some extra holes, and the pickups show plenty of playing wear. Controls are standard VVT but the pots seem to have different length shafts. You can see the holes where a different bridge was previously mounted. The headstock face seems to have a different, lighter lacquer(?), maybe from the the decal was done? I took this intriguing piece in trade recently as a potential project, but at the moment I don't really have the time or energy to do anything with it, and the Precision profile neck doesn't really do it for me. If it doesn't sell I'll save my pennies for a fret dress, or a Status neck. Collect from Glagow G51 (near the south end of the Clyde Tunnel) or courier in the UK should be about £25. You're welcome to come inspect and try it, I make a pretty good coffee. £250 ono. Not really looking for trades although you're welcome to try me, especially if you have a 5+ string fretless. Nice. *shredding intensifies* Floyds are great if you can get the setup right then leave it there, IME. As long as you don't want to change tuning or gauge they stay in tune forever.

Acoustic guitar with buzzing preamp — grounding issue?
velvetkevorkian replied to velvetkevorkian's topic in Guitars
Update! It went away all by itself Took the battery out, put the same one back in, tried unscrewing the preamp from the body before realising that wasn't practical and gave up. Plugged it in and it sounds fine ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ -

Hah, small world -- pretty sure the person who sold this is my dad, unless someone else listed the same thing at the same time for the same price

Just got this back from setup: This originally belonged to the guitarist in my first band many years ago, who gave it to me as a fixer-upper, which I did, then it went to my sister for a while, then it sat in my Mum's front room for a few years when my sister moved abroad. Sounds pretty monstrous with a bit of gain on.

Jim Fleeting 9 string bass

If I was shelling out £3k-ish for a second-hand bass I'd probably want something I could adjust the action on. -

LettsBass 13 string bass

Rather taken with that, though I doubt I could afford to keep it in strings. Some interesting tuning possibilities if you forgo straight fourths, too — 6 string bass + 7 string guitar in one, maybe? -
Time to move on some long-stay patients to free up some room in the rack. Not sure what model these are — they're often sold as International Series but that applies to a lot of Peavey gear. You'll struggle to find nicer playing basses for the money though. Almost convinced myself to keep them. Both basses are set up with very low action and light gauge Elixirs (£45 or so a set!). String through bridge or body (currently through bridge). I play with a very light touch, and both basses have pretty flat relief and have had the B, E, and G bridge saddles filed to get the action low enough for my taste. Passive, VVTT. Nice cutaway neck joint for shredding up the dusty end. Nice quilted veneer(?) top. Fretted (red): Good condition. Minor playing wear, one small chip in the finish at the neck pocket. The volume knobs have been swapped around for some reason. The truss rod nut was stripped when I got it, it was replaced by Strung Out Guitars in Glasgow and works fine now. Rarely played since I got my Conklin. Fretless (orange): Good condition, some small dents but nothing through the finish. Nothing you can see without looking for it. Defretted before it arrived with me, fretlines have been filled with veneer strips or similar. Some minor roundwound wear on the board but nothing that affects playability. Mwah for days. Looking for £130 each or £250 for the pair. Trades/PX considered, basses with 5+ strings or guitars with 7+ strings in particular. Rather trade up + cash, especially if you have a nice fretless. Local deal preferred but shipping can probably be arranged. I'm in Glasgow G51, near the south end of the Clyde Tunnel. Welcome to come try, I make a pretty good coffee.

I have a cheapish Yamaha acoustic with an active preamp for the piezo pickup. When plugged in it makes a horrendous buzzing, totally overwhelming the sound of the guitar, except when I touch metal parts of the jack cable. I guess this is a grounding issue? Can anyone say whether it's likely to be difficult to resolve? Thanks.
