Cheapish pedalboard recommendations

Alright folks I've just got rid on my multi effects and have a bought a few pedals.

I don't envisage more than 5 pedals (tuner:limiter:chorus:octave:preamp/distortion), any cheapish pedal board recommendations that would suit this sort of thing. Do I need a powered board or can I daisy-chain from a boss power supply?

Thanks in advance

Stevie

Well thats a pretty wide ranging question with many possible answers. Here's a few.

Daisychaining could be fine if you use all 9v centre negative powered pedals with low current draw, however the minutre you want to put on something that is say more than 9v or has a high current draw (like a delay) then you will naturally run into problems. Also the biggest drawback of daisychaining is that if the cable or the pedal from which the chain follows is damaged then your whole board wont have any power (not great in a live situation). So if you need relability then I would recommend saving up and getting a specific power supply with isolated outputs - Rothwell Audio make one and its great, maybe even look at Diago although its not isolated as I understand!

Pedalboards - well I would still probably say that Pedaltrain make the best non-powered boards around and if you are using 5 or so Boss sized pedals you may even be able to squeeze them onto a PT-Mini (although you may have problems fitting a power supply too). Alternatively you could pick up a Gator Pedal tote super cheap on ebay - I got mine for £11 plus £7 postage the other day and its handy and light enough just to take a few pedals to rehearsal without lugging a maddive board.

Cheers

Chris

Having just taken delivery of one today I would very highly recommend the power supply from effectpowersupplies, VERY reasonably priced at £22.99, including delivery, right-angled tips, and a UK plug, and, just like it says on the tin, completely noiseless. Spot on. You, like me at the moment, need it for 5 effects, and it supports 6, with more than enough power to supply everything, at 1.3A.
If you want it cheap then DIY is the way to go! For 5 pedals I would imagine it wouldn't cost more than £10-15!
Hi Jack I looked at the Gorm thread on talkbass, I thought the orange one the bloke made was dynamite, however, I think mine would look sh*t cos I'm completely hopeless at any sort of DIY.

If you want a simple DIY job then I made this last year - http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=...t=0&start=0

Only problem I've found is carrying it around - it doesn't really fit into any bags that I can find so I've ended up only using it in the house. It's absolutely solid though and I'd have no worries using it for regular gigging.

Check this out http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=58038 it cost me about £30 to make and I'm not a DIY expert as well!

Alright, I was in the same position a few years ago and managed to get my hands on one of these for about £30 off this very forum:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Warwick-pedalboard-P...=item2305d1a2b2

I know that obviously it is priced at a lot more than its' worth, but that seems like a good solution for you. I would sell you mine, as I upgraded to a much larger Diago Tourman years ago and never shifted it, but it's very useful for smaller sets and acoustic gigs when only a few pedals are needed. Great bit of kit.

Alternatively you could make your own, much, much cheaper! May I suggest a OneSpot (or daisy chain wallwart equilivilant power supply) if you're only looking to power a few pedals, or a that Johnny Shred Freak power supply (clone of a Diago Power Station) if you think you may have a few high draw pedals. Very cheap anyway. Basically the same unit. As far as a board goes, my guitarist bought an old case from a charity shop, fitted it with foam and made a small custom board out of some old wood to fit inside; like a glove! I think it cost him £3.20 or something silly like that to make and it does the same job as my Diago, but I spent a hell of a lot more on mine...

These aren't bad either for the price:

If you look they come in different sizes too :).

Hope that's of some help.

I think those are unbranded Stagg cases - exactly the same as far as I can tell...

Great value for money apparently.

That's what I use. They're fine for the sort of gigging I do, but they're not the toughest things in the world.
Closed, mine's solid as you like, but it goes a bit floppy when you take the lid off. Having said that, it goes on the floor at that point so it doesn't really matter does it?

I've decided to put together a little pedal board of my own, so this thread will prove very helpful!

I've been a long time 'rack system' user - but have found a great FAT bass sound in a few pedals. Once I have taken delivery of the last few components I want, I will start sizing them up for a pedal board.

One thing I *would* like is a way to protect the knobs from being bashed - I'm not used to having 'controls' down by my feet - I have always just had a MIDI controlelr in front of me!

Any ideas what I could use?

Bought the unpowered Gator tote gigboard from a bloke locally, can I take it that I can daisy chain a TU2, A Boss limiter, a boss Chorus, An MXR Octaver and MXR M80 from a boss power supply or do I need something with multiple outputs?

Cheers

I guess it depends on the current output from the Boss PSU. If it is in the region of 300mA or more, I reckon you are fine! (That's taking the draw of each pedal to be 50mA and a bit extra to be sure! I prefer to use regulated DC power supplies for less 'noise' - I can not confirm if the Boss is one though.

The PSU I have - and will be supplying just 4 pedals is 1.3A - Which I think is MORE than enough! lol Overkill

Bought a Johnny Shredfeak PSU just in case, much cheapness if it doesn't do the job I haven't spent too much cash.

Excellent! PSU's are the sort of thing that when you don't need 'em - you can bung 'em in the cupboard - because you just know that one day you *will* need again!
The one that I have for my pedals is from a piece of IT gear - and it's tiny! not much bigger than a matchbox and can supply over 1A at 10V. So I'll defintely use that to supply power to my board. I just need to decide what board I want - as I really don't need any more than 4 pedals.. 5 at a real push!
