Bad paint job

I've been offered a Lakland 44-02 for, what must be said, a very low price

However, there is a reason that it's so cheap - the owner has re-sprayed it and made a complete dog's breakfast of it, not just on the body of the bass but also the pick up covers! I'm guessing that he has just sprayed over the original finish, but as I haven't actually seen it so I'm not sure.

I am a bit tempted but don't think that I could live with it in it's present state - any ideas for restoring it to it's former glories??

Laklands are made from good bits of wood. Should hopefully look something like this:-

I'll bet you could sand that all off and wipe in an oil finish like on a Warwick.

That's what I would do, anyway...

As for the pup covers, you could try scotch-brite pads on those. The paint might come off very easily.

Yep, that's the one on ebay that everyone seems to have seen!

Can anyone have an educated guess what he has used to spray it?

This looks sufficiently amateurish that chances are he's just squirted that green crap (Halfords rattle can, I expect) on top of the original finish. If so, a bit of fine wire wool & very fine grade sandpaper will get the spray off, and T-cut & elbow grease will get the gloss back on the original finish, assuming it's poly. The pup covers will probably clean up in the same way.

Jon.
