Hi, if that is the bass you are looking to upgrade to the one you have must be pretty useless, in my opinion thats what i would consider a very basic beginners bass, , if you are upgrading then looks are the least important and you should be looking at second hand in my opinion, cheers, Jez

Thanks Jez.
You´re spot on though, as the one I started on was pretty crap. I was lucky it had strings!
Managed to somehow sell it though and did alright on the price I got for it
I only want something I can abuse in a rockabilly type context-slap and twang and all that.
If its pretty light, even better.
Just kinda liked the look of this one.

Hey Colin -

You could do worse than getting one of Thomann's double basses. I recently bought one costing £780, which included free delivery, and I'm more than impressed. I asked for a low set-up and they did a great job with it. I even played one from them that cost about £300, but with a great set-up it played like something cost five times that much. To put it in perspective, my last bass cost me £3000, and I honestly don't miss it now that I have my new one. I've been playing upright for 10 years, all of that professionally (I'm a cheeky bugger), and I'd buy the same cheaper bass again over the expensive one, it terms on tone and playability.

Bear in mind that if you're paying a hundred quid or so on shipping that it doesn't add to the value of the bass, so Thomann's free delivery makes it a very attractive option. If you fancy taking a spin up just north of the border, near Newry, you're welcome to try out my bass.
Thanks Jake.
After reading some posts from other BC users, I will definately take your word for it.
:)
May I ask if you know of anything somewhat similar but less pants sounding?
Many thanks

Being honest mate I don't. I tend to drool over basses that are 15K
Thanks very much for that Gareth, very much appreciated.
I have been looking at some of the options from Thomann in the last day or two.
I may be up around your neck of the woods early in the new year (like every second person in the South, :) )
Thanks a million

Good luck finding some parking when you're up here!! I'm actually gigging in Newry on the 3rd and I'll be in early afternoon for a soundcheck, so if you're in town that day let me know, I'll have my upright with me. Then I'm away on tour on the 6th so after that I'll be of no use to you!

I'm thinking of selling my 3/4 size rockabilly bass.
Im not sure what make it is but I would guess it to be at least 20 years old.
I bought it from another bassist in a rockabilly band when I was in a rockabilly band, I had to leave because Im away too much for work at the moment :) . it just sits in the spare room which is a shame.
It looks very cool though rough and ready looking with the roackabilly white line around the edges, it has slap pickups on it and new strings called Innovation super slaps, they cost me about 90 quid! they have hardly been played, and aparrently last for ages and ages. I still have the strings that were on it when I bought it and a spare set of Nylon(?) strings.

Anyway, if your interested let me know. Im in Luton but can transport it if needed, Im in London at least a few times a week too.

Hi there. I'm in Ireland too and I was also looking at the Thomann basses, which look pretty good, although I eventually managed to get my hands on a second-hand Shen from a guy in Dublin. You might want to take a look at this one :-

It looks like one of the better Thomann basses and a much reduced price - well worth a trip up to Dublin to take a look at it I reckon.

Talk to these guys. They ship international, I'm just not sure how much. They sell Prima Basses I didn't pick one up myself, but I played one in their store and it was fairly top notch. Chinese made, nice ebony board, a good set up could make it a beater for years.
With the Euro doing so well, you could make out really cheap.

I bought a 'solid state' bass from the same supplier (Gedo Musik) last year - very nice wood, made in Czech Republic, but finished off in Germany by Gedo Musik. It cost around £1500 plus shipping, and they have comparable models available at present.
e.g.

or

or 3/4 size

The cheaper models, like the one you linked to, are laminate (i.e. plywood), which is typical of basses in that price range. But if you want something better, the solid wood versions are very good quality for the money. They come with a basic bow and a decent soft case too.

Delivery from Germany was really quick too - ordered on Saturday, arrived the following Thursday.
