jmsjabb
OK, looking around at amps, can someone clearly explain the main differences between bass and guitar heads? It seems people like Waters played bass through a Ampeg V4 guitar amp. I understand the cab will have different speakers for different frequencies. I used a Marshall 100 Super Lead amp for years. I thought it had more punch than the bass version. I assume bass and guitar EQ's are different in order to match up with the range and tone of the intended instruments.
Delberthot
I remember Doug Whimbish saying that he only used guitar effects, never bass specific ones as he preferred them. lot of people in the past have used guitar amps and some still do
jmsjabb
IIR it was a guitar version, not the B. I think he used to use Daves stuff, pedals and amps
Mr. Foxen
Preamp voicing is different, guitar preamps tend to be mid and treble biased, and often there is a high pass filter to prevent mud and speaker damage to guitar cabs. lojo
I gigged for around a year (pub circuit stuff) in the early 90s with an old fender guitar amp combo, it sounded great and very loud but I cant explain why cause amp tech aint my thing
The Funk
Preamp voicing is different, guitar preamps tend to be mid and treble biased, and often there is a high pass filter to prevent mud and speaker damage to guitar cabs.
Agreed. Is the output transformer usually smaller on a guitar amp, also resulting in less bass?
EssentialTension
IIRC, Fender Showman amps were popular with some bassists in the late sixties (e.g. Jack Casady) while some guitarists liked the Fender Bassman.
