Over the years I've done just about everything imaginable with Fender style basses and this could well be one of them.
If it's not mine it's very spooky that someone else may have had the same idea. You see I liked the sound of a Rick but was more comfortable holding a Fender. I think one of the main reasons for the preference was my (then) playing style which involved using a plec and palm dampening at the bridge - you can't do that on a Rick. Can't quite remember how I would have aquired the Fender neck but I was well into swapping parts at the time and maybe someone would have swapped me for a custom-made fretless neck. The electrics almost certainly came from a real 4001 which I bought from a guy who had written off his bass in a way that the broken neck and body was deemed beyond repair.
As far as the body is concerned I would love to see a photograph of the thing without the scratchplate but it is most likely to be a Vox Symphonic bass body which carried the twin pickups in the same position as the Rick ones now look to occupy.
I still have a Vox body of the same type (routed out for a Kahler trem believe it or not) and it looks to be made of the same wood - mahogany-type grain but a lighter brown colour.

I take exception to the use of sexual innuendo in giving the bass a nickname - suffice to say the present owner may well also have a pair of Ernie Balls.

Intriguing! I've been scouring the web for a piccy of a Vox Symphonic, but no luck, they seem to be incredibly rare. Any chance you could post a pic of the body you still have?

I've asked on RickResource if anyone knows where this lives now.

Answering the request for a pic of the (almost mythical) Vox Symphonic bass here's the well butchered example I referred to. You have to use some imagination and blot out the routs for Kahler trem, J pickup and bass half P pickup and then you will see where the two Vox pickups would be (still showing signs of the original sunburst finish).

I tend to think now that the Prick is a custom body as it does not show signs of scratchplate holes which would be present on the Vox.

Cheers for that - no, I don't think that's the body - the contouring where horns meet neck pocket is different.

It turns out this was found on on the Alembic forum - there's another pic, showing the bass in use, looks to be a couple of decades or so ago:

The amount of old H/H gear visible on that stage does sort of make me assume the pic was taken over here.

The guy who posted that on the Alembic forum seems to go by the name of Greame, and strangely enough shares the same city as you Jon. Still gigging as well it would seem - http://www.bigtuna.co.uk

Edit: And it would seem that he still owns it, a 79 P with Rick parts.

Another edit: And here's his BC profile! http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showuser=519

I take back everything I said about the wall paper. Sort of. :)

I see your Prick (ahem...) and raise you this:

Of course, it´s neither Fender nor Deluxe. That website is full of wacky fakes.

I keep a small towel near me when I'm playing. :)
