TGEvans
Hi all, I defretted my spector performer a few years back and I love it, until now I have been using tomastik infelds roundwounds. my question is I have started using this bass to play with a hardcore/rock band and its pretty interesting.I have been thinking about using a different type of string but not sure what.what do you guys put on your fretless basses and do you play heavier styles with a fretless? can the type of string affect the fretboard too with it being defretted? any feedback will be good, thanks,t
Delberthot
Soul = Flats Rock = flats Funk = flats Pop = Flats With fretless, I've found a lot of it has to do with the setup of the bass. I can get mine to more or less do everything i want it to do and with flats, it doesn't chew up the board

dannybuoy
Status Hotwire Halfrounds They are rounds that are then ground down to be as smooth as flats. They are very smooth indeed, so no finger noise and they're kind to your fretboard, but they have a bit more sing and sustain to them than regular flats which is great for fretless. Bags of mwah with these - only £16.99 too! Edited June 24, 2009 by dannybuoy

I also have TI jazz flats on my Spectorcore and they are really nice. Smotth to play and a lovely warm, rounded sound. You can hear the Hot Wires on my ReverbNation page on the tune 'Maple Leaf Angel'. Link below. Edited June 24, 2009 by BassBus
Delberthot
I have to disagree about TI flats being all about warmth and smooth tone. I can get mine to be pretty aggressive and punchy. I can still get the Rick tone when playing fingerstyle when we do 'Town Called Malice"
BassBus
Fairdoos, I'm just not aggresive player so don't get a chance to hear those tones.
WinterMute
I prefer roundwounds, usually Rotosound nickels. Sure they chew the board up after a while, but that's just the price you pay for the tone. My sweat is nasty stuff and I kill strings quite quickly, even with a careful clean after playing, flats don't cut it for me in the high end, and groundwound die too quickly. I'll keep the roundwounds a stump up for a new board every couple of years like I used to I think.
hubrad
I used to use roundwound Elites steels, as they were the only thing I could find for 5-string headless.. http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=44673 but now I mostly use flats - Picato made me a special set, so Ive got into their strings. If you use rounds and the board gets chewed, a decent repairer can skim the board.. the fretless equivalent of a fret dress.
bh2
I've been using rounds on my fretlesses for thirty-ish years no probs... RS66's are my favourite.
