nekomatic Posted Monday at 18:14 Posted Monday at 18:14 I've had this as an earworm all day and can't for the life of me remember what it's called. I'm fairly sure it must be by some mid-Sixties quintet or bigger band, someone like Herbie Hancock / Wayne Shorter / Joe Henderson / Freddie Hubbard, but I've had a scan of their likely-looking albums on Apple Music and not come up with anything yet. This would be the A section, it does something else after that that I don't recall. Anyone recognise it? Quote
BassTractor Posted Monday at 18:49 Posted Monday at 18:49 (edited) Don't recognise it, sorry. I tried Musipedia to not avail; have you tried any other online resources? I'm not knowledgeable about these sites, but do know one such site exists that lets you hum the tune. Edited Monday at 19:15 by BassTractor Quote
nekomatic Posted Monday at 19:14 Author Posted Monday at 19:14 Thanks, I did try Musipedia which gave me a lot of what looked like trad folk tunes and some other you-hum-it-I’ll-recognise-it site which reckoned it was Dua Lipa 😄 I’m sure someone will get it soon and I’ll kick myself. Quote

I hope they do and that you'll kick nekomatic. 🙂 Sticking me neck out here, but the tune doesn't give me any impression of having been written by one of the greats. Though maybe it's the development of the piece that does the trick ... and I'll have to kick BassTractor. Quote
Dad3353 Posted Monday at 19:24 Posted Monday at 19:24 I've tried it out, but it rings no bells here, sorry. Quote
Homatron Posted Monday at 19:43 Posted Monday at 19:43 From the rhythm it could be a take on "Do nothing til you hear from me", but the melody doesn't quite match what I have in my head. Quote
nekomatic Posted Monday at 20:18 Author Posted Monday at 20:18 I should have said, it's over a pedal D chord (in the key I've written it, which is probably not the original key obvs). Quote
Hellzero Posted Monday at 21:15 Posted Monday at 21:15 It could be almost anything from the bebop era... Hard to tell what from so little. Quote
Hellzero Posted Monday at 21:22 Posted Monday at 21:22 It could be Anthropology from Charlie Parker, it sounds like that... Quote
nekomatic Posted Monday at 22:25 Author Posted Monday at 22:25 Thanks but nope. Definitely a sixties sound not bebop. I’m sure you’d get it instantly if you knew it, but maybe it’s more obscure than I thought. Quote
BassTractor Posted Tuesday at 00:39 Posted Tuesday at 00:39 Yup, kicking BassTractor as we speak. 🙂 (Still dislike that theme, but do like the track.) Quote
Homatron Posted Tuesday at 07:38 Posted Tuesday at 07:38 Gah! Also kicking myself... should have played it through rather than just glance at it. Great track. Quote

That's nothing! I even did play it through. My problem (apart from not remembering the track) was me being old and slow ... and taking the 180 tempo to mean something like 117. 😄 1 Quote
Hellzero Posted Tuesday at 10:09 Posted Tuesday at 10:09 You are right, it's indeed Passion Dance from Mc Coy Tyner. I played your partition on the piano, but it didn't ring a bell, certainly because I couldn't get the feeling. But now here's what I hear and I hear an F as the first note, not a D, sorry for the writing, but it's not the most important thing to me as I use it as a reminder only... 1 Quote

What I'm kicking myself about is that in my memory the piano part did a much heavier chord on the 1 of each two-bar phrase, like BOOM! da-da-da-da-da-da-daaa, BOOM! da-da-da-da-da-da-daaa-daaaa, and how much more McCoy Tyner than that can you even get? NONE MORE MCCOY TYNER. 2 Quote

NONE MORE MCCOY TYNER. Yeah, ain't those things weird? I do those things too, to the point of playing tracks again and again in search of that element ... which then isn't there. On another note (no pun intended), to me, the essence of the theme is the tension created by the heavy chord under the syncopated high G. Tmight be totally different for other people, Idunno. 1 Quote
