I listen to all comments, criticism, praise etc out of politeness but the only ones I take serious notice of are from people who's opinions I respect, and the respect is born out of experience and understanding. That means mostly musicians, but I value our non-musician sound man's comments which come from a lifetime of listening to a wide range of music and his knowledge of the band's sound having engineered with them for more than 5 years.

That's fair enough.

Does it need to be said? Does it need to be said by me? Does it need to be said now?

Not really, no, no.

My friends band is pretty rough but they're so convinced they're amazing I can't say anything. Lovely bunch of people and I'll go and see them occasionally but usually, not many people show up

I’ve a bunch of mates who are in a band that aren’t that great, but they get really good audiences when they play so people like them.

I've come across bands that are musically awful*, but do well because they play what people want to hear and keep the volume down.

*As in so bad it's almost painful.
