Overall length is 2cm short (bit of a stretch but probably manageable), but body length is 7cm short for my bass. My guess is that I could just about squeeze the Alcoa into this gigbag but it would be pulled out of shape with inevitable potentially disadvantageous consequences. I.E. I'd end up breaking something. Not keen to spend £835 to find out. As an owner of the bag, it's the bass that would come off worse 👍 1 Quote
PaulKing Posted August 25 Posted August 25 (edited) I'm still really happy with my Roth & Junius after a few years heavy use. Recommended, good value. https://www.thomann.co.uk/roth_junius_bsb_04_3_4_og_bass_soft_bag.htm £219 Ample protection, thick foam, really sturdy handles everywhere you need them, comfy 'rucksack' shoulder straps with back-up straps round the neck, strong zips. Doesn't show any signs of strain anywhere. They do a 4/4 too, if the Alcoa needs it. Only downer is that it is quite bulky for storage. Doesn't easily fold down or compress, so needs almost as much space as the bass itself. Edited August 25 by PaulKing addition 1 Quote

Duckyincarnate Posted August 27 Posted August 27 Useful thread, thanks everyone. I have just gotten seven years of use out of this Roth and Junius bag which seems alright, given that I am schlepping it all around town and on the Tube, and not just in and out of a car like many. It's starting to fail in the zip now, and open seam around the neck joint and just general wear of the fabric. I did look at a Soundwear last time (£650 then) but it was too roomy for my bass, and they stopped making a 1/2 size one. Might try the fancier R&J this time around, or splurge on a TuffBag. Quote
Happy Jack Posted August 28 Author Posted August 28 (edited) Things I have learned today ... Mooradian are actually still in business. https://mooradian.com/ *************************************** 9 days later: Or perhaps not. I tried to contact them over a week ago using both the email address given and their own Contact Us form. No reply of any sort. So either they're gone, or they may as well be gone for all the use they'll be. As you were. Edited September 6 by Happy Jack Quote

Happy Jack Posted September 17 Author Posted September 17 Their website currently offers only a 1/4-sized Upright Bass bag. 🙄 https://www.tkl.com/product-type/bags/ Sadly, their website is a bit of a joke. The 'Find A Dealer' section contains more mis-spellings of US State names than I have ever seen before and the links don't work, plus there's no pricing info at all. Apart from that, we're all good. tinyd Posted September 17 Posted September 17 I've had one of these for about 8 years and it's great - well made, loads of handles plus wheels https://www.gear4music.ie/Woodwind-Brass-Strings/Westbury-Deluxe-Padded-3-4-Double-Bass-Gig-Bag-with-Wheels/1MBI Quote
Happy Jack Posted September 17 Author Posted September 17 I hate to say this, Tiny, but that's exactly the rapidly-disintegrating gigbag I already own. Quote
tinyd Posted September 17 Posted September 17 (edited) Yikes! Mine is still in perfect nick but then it's not like I'm taking it out multiple times times per week.... Out of interest, are aluminium DBs heavier than wooden ones? Edited September 17 by tinyd Quote

That's a reasonable question but, actually, if the school bass was also my main gigging bass, yes. I was walking into a venue for a gig I'd been really looking forward to about 15 years back with a DB worth around £1000 in a case worth around £50. A complete prat decided to try and 'nip' through the door ahead of me, in doing so pushed me slightly off balance, and the result was that the bridge hit the door frame, was knocked down, which broke the (f***ing expensive) wound gut E- string, but which more significantly caused the soundpost to fall. I was in a small, relatively dark venue with about an hour to fix it all, so decided instead to get my fretless electric backup and use that. Not the end of the world but the sound and performance was way off what I and the band had hoped for, especially given it was a trad music venue. In short the cash I subsequently spent on the Soundwear had nothing to do with the value of the bass and everything to do with getting that bass in and out of venues with hassles. And it did, it's one rugged, robust, and reliable bag 👍 1 Quote
Happy Jack Posted September 19 Author Posted September 19 After a truly ridiculous amount of to-ing and fro-ing, measurement and comparison, emails ignored or answered uselessly, I've ended up buying: https://www.thomann.co.uk/protec_c313_deluxe_34_bass_bag.htm Will it be any good? Watch this space ... It should be good,I have two of the cheaper Protec cases and although they have less padding and different handles they have been very tough and I have had no issues with them. The zippers are well made but I get the edges close together before I try to zip up the case, I think when people use the zipper to pull the case together it puts too much strain on them and they fail, guess how I know.🙄 Quote
Happy Jack Posted 2 hours ago Author Posted 2 hours ago It arrived this afternoon. Nice enough bag, certainly way tougher (and better looking) material than 20-denier nylon, but not yet convinced it's £330 worth. We'll see. Something that was clear immediately is that it's a very snug fit for the Alcoa, especially over the bridge. Hmmmmm. I can read that as a good thing and as a bad thing. Quote
