on electric basses they have been almost solely cosmetic (Jazz bass) or to hide routing (P bass).

Exactly... many are cosmetic- TZ's routing only claim doesn't stack up. Egen if you don't like them they aren't all there to cover routing.

OK, they're either there to cover routing or to try to make it look like your bass was made on the cheap by pretending they're covering routing. They're still an affront to, well, everything.

I know it's irrational and it's all down to personal taste and I know I'm the d!CK here but this is s safe space right?

Custom colour fender basses should have white/mint guards , look in the books , nearly all white guards , why oh why do people put tort on them, sunburst, yeah tort of course, Olympic white beautiful, fiesta red OK I'll let it pass there is the odd one (although more than likely a sunburst bass refinished by the distributor like selmer or kitchens to order when new) but Daphne Blue , all wrong . Shoreline gold, I feel sick

Apart from looking all wrong the celluloid tort is really hard to replicate unless you drop a fortune on a spitfire, why oh why do fender put awful cheap looking tort guards on custom shop custom colour basses , with an aged mint guard you'd have to get close to tell it wasn't the real thing with a tort one it catches my eye a mile off

Sorry everyone!

Same. Tort looks great, when it looks great. Sunburst, black, white. They're pretty much the only finishes that work IMO. It's like wearing tan leather loafers with a tracksuit, both of which are sensible fashion choices in the right circumstances but those circumstances should never align.

I'm the opposite. White/mint guards are very rarely acceptible to me! They remind me of cheap starter basses from when I started. Black is generallly my preference. Never had a tort, but I wouldn't say no if a bass I wanted had one.

Ok I can see a case for a tracksuit if competing at an athletics event, but tan leather loafers?

My Kala U Bass is black with white guard and it is a common thing online for people wanting to change it.
