G string with old string sound

Good evening, friends. Here's the thing: I bought a set of Rotosounds SH77s a few months ago. I took it to my luthier, he put the strings on, and right away I noticed that the G string had an "old string" sound, completely dull. Well, I asked the dealer here in my country for a replacement string and they gave me a brand new set. My luthier put them on, and when I got home, the G string was dull again... Now I'd like to know what could be happening. I tried taking the string off and putting it back on, and I didn't see any difference. Maybe my problem is with the Badass Bass bridge or the tuning machines. Has anyone else experienced a similar situation? I've read elsewhere that it's a problem that can happen with Fenders... By the way, my bass is a Japanese Fender Steve Harris.

I had this problem with E strings many years ago and stopped buying Rotosounds. That solved it.

IME Rotosound strings "go off" even if they are just sat in their packets on the rack in the musical instrument store.

 

Either switch to a different brand, or only buy Rotosound strings direct from Rotosound at their stand at a music instrument show and fit them within a couple of weeks of purchase.

Yes, it’s a shame this happens with Rotosounds, I had it a few times with the E, no idea about G as back in those days the G was like an unwanted/unused free gift.

Everybody blames strings when setting the witness point at the saddle gives the strings their tone and 'voice'. Maybe try this out when initially fitting strings.

Hmmm...... I put a set of Elixirs on a Jazz bass I have. I was practising some slap (a very rare thing for me) and noticed that the G string was very dull sounding. As the action wasn't great I took the neck off and inserted a shim in the neck pocket.

 

When I put everything back together the G string sounded fine.

 

I'm not sure what changed, possible something to do with string tension over the nut?
