jackthejesusfreak
What’s the opinion and consensus on which strings to use? I ordered two extra sets of D’Addario EXL170S for the short sale bass I bought. Any opinions or advice? Jack
Mr. Foxen
There is no consensus, use the strings you like, try lots, clean them with meths, pass them on. In fact, we should have a strings test/trade program going, you use a set for a week, and post it on, one person who likes new, one who likes old, one who with clean them. I have various newish roundwound sets that I'm willing to swap.

The past few years I've been questing for my perfect set of strings. Trying out different gauges, brands and materials getting a new pack every couple of months. Like most things, it's a personal thing. There is consenus to about what rough aural properties string material can make, i.e. stainless steels are brighter than nickels, and nickels are softer on the hand than stainless steel. But different strokes for different folks. Oh... and I did manage to find my perfect set of strings, DR Sunbeams 45-100.
BigRedX
You'll probably also find that different strings suit different basses. Just to make it even more complicated...
chris_b
I use DR Lo-Riders 99% of the time. These days 5 string sets are expensive so I can't afford to experiment. I stick with what I know, and they are good.
