The Secret To Pino Palladino’s Fretless Sound

Recommended Posts

I’ve made a video about Pino’s sublime fretless bass line on the intro to Paul Young’s, Wherever I Lay My Hat.

Pino quotes an interesting source for part of the melody.  Anyone know who that source is?

I was going to say the answer was a Stingray until I saw the Jazz! I'd still like a fretless 'Ray some day, Every Time You Go Away is one of my favourite bass lines.

Great video - im sure far beyond my fretless abilities, but you make it look effortless.

Thanks! Spend some time on it & you’ll be fine.

Pino did use a Stingray for the track. I haven’t got a fretless Stingray or I would have used it in my video.

I put the link above to let the pictures do the talking...plus specs.
As I’m going in a different direction, I’ve decided to let this one go. In mint condition! Plays like a dream!
I spoke to Alan Cringean himself (luthier) and even he says he went in deep with this one and some lucky owner would enjoy immensely.
The electronics is the East-UK, Uni-pre as I’m more familiar with this setup and so has a vast variety of tones in the engine! Partial lines and luminay dots on lines on the side.
I’ll put a fresh set of strings on and a new 9v battery before collection or shipping (probably Newtones).
I’ll add some home pics but the original pics are more professional so have a look at both.
Aylesbury collection possible but UK shipping and Hiscox hard case included in the price.
Note: this spec would cost approx £3000 (and you would have to wait!)
      Now....who’s feeling lucky?

Now priced at £1500 to go

Bought from a fellow basschatter a couple of years ago. A very late '77/early '78 factory fretless Fender Precision. (Serial no says 1977, neck and pickup dates say 1978)....
In great condition for a 42 year old Bass, the finish has sunk into the grain in parts on the body, a few little marks here and there, and some lacquer chips on the headstock, but no major dings anywhere.
Judging by the crazing in the headstock lacquer, I'd say it's been finished in nitro cellulose.
The scratchplate has a slight warp in it, which isn't unusal for this era.
The nut has been changed to brass, a long time ago from the looks of it, and likewise, the bridge barrels have also been replaced with brass items. Other than those, and some of the scratchplate and pickup screws, this is a very original instrument.
The fingerboard has just been reshot and dressed to the correct radius by Mike Smith Guitars, Southport, and is a lovely piece of highly grained Rosewood, in perfect condition, that plays like new.
Weight is typical Fender fretless fare, I'd say between 9 and 10 pounds. Not as heavy as the maple necked one I sold on here a few years ago, but meaty enough.
A semi rigid case is included with the Bass, but for an extra £60, I'll throw in a Hiscox instead.
Happy to courier, (I estimate £30-35 with insurance extra), or any buyer may collect.
      Any questions, please ask.
      Cheers.
      Mart

Amazing analogue bass chorus, this is the 2nd gen true bypass version.
Internal trim pot to set FX mix level.
External controls for rate and depth.
Chorus, pitch Mod and Flanger modes.
Fixed internal crossover (around 150-200Hz from what I remember ) so the bass frequencies remain unaffected.
      Velcro on the bottom.

      No collections or trades thanks.
Due to the CV19 situation getting things posted may take a little bit longer than usual as I an only dropping of parcels when going to shop for food essentials so please be aware of that.
      No trades thanks.

      Only tested at home.
Great on fretless bass and lush on guitar.  However, I've got duplication and am after an Acoustic Simulator stomp, so this has to fund it.
