EUB Retailers in London / SE

My son has been getting into playing jazz bass and is keen to have an EUB for his 18th birthday. Having taken a look at various forums etc I am amazed at how many there are to choose from... and thoroughly confused to boot! The obvious thing (well, to me, anyway) is to try a few out and see what we like the sound/feel of, but it's obviously quite a specialist piece of kit and most retailers seem either to be acoustic purists or guitar shops with the odd EUB if you're lucky. Can anyone recommend somewhere where we could try out a few instruments and hopefully get some decent advice about them too? London area. Thanks for any suggestions!

Hey dude!

Umm well don't get a cheap one lol, like the Dean thing! Eugh

The most popular EUB is probably the NS Design Upright, can be seen in most of the Bass orientated shops in London, Cellar, Gallery, Centre etc.
The Bass Gallery in Camden usually carrys a few other makes, some second hand etc.

Then theres the few Custom builders in the UK, Mo Clifton is in Blackheath in london and John Shuker is in Sheffield. Theres a few other builders to.

I personally play a Shuker 36" scale EUB, and a good friend of mine has the Clifton Mini Mo, both cheaper then the NS Design, but you have to wait until they're built to try them obviously. You're more then welcome to try my Shuker if you want a trip out to south Bucks.

Hope this helps

Coughs...You don't always have to wait - I've still got a Mo Clifton 36" mini upright for sale......good as you'll get, half the price of a new one (sorry Mo..)

There's some pics somewhere in the for sale pages

Pm me if you're interested?

So usually the NS Design uprights come on Tripods and are active, the CRT is a passive bass on a spike, aimed at acoustic upright players. In this way its very similar to the Mo Clifton mini, although that is active.

So your options so far from this topic are:
NS Design CRT: One for sale here - Tryed and tested basses personally & worldwide, great tone 42 and half inch scale, spike
Mo Clifton Mini Mo: One for sale here - Personally tryed and tested, great sound, 36" scale, spike
Yamaha Silent Bass: One for sale on Wardour Street, untested by me, i see very mixed reviews so definatly try before you buy! 42 and a half inch scale, spike
Shuker Upright: Custom Order, Any woods, options and scale lengths you want, Tripod. I can personally recommend these basses and can offer you try mine out before you buy.
