Massive unfocussed GAS attack...

Not sure what's going on, but I went to the 'Basses for Sale' forum to do some Friday afternoon window shopping (always a mistake) and after monkey-button clicking the first few posts realsied that the whole top of the list was super high-end stuff... well over £20k of bass in the first 8 listings. Do these people know something that is causing mass disposal of quality basses? I'm used to seeing some lovely instruments (that I can't afford)... but not normally Every Single One. I need a lie down... and a better paying job!

Elrick, Ritter and Sei, well they are high-end, but I can see only three, not eight?

You certainly noticed, that there are lots of those F-word bolt-ons available. For some reason, whatever it might be, but certainly they are sold in numbers.

Maybe it would be more accurate to say high-price... since any bass over about £500 is an expensive one to me! I would still consider a 'correct' vintage Fender or ealrly Warwick etc. to be extremely desirable though - in fact I'd take them over most of the high-end basses by your definition, although it's all academic - I was only window shopping 😉

Boutique basses - especially multi-string are definitely out of kilter with the visual and sound aesthetic at the moment. In these days of rock, funk and jazz now all minority or specialist music forms creates a perfect storm of redundancy for these old world tools of exploration and growth. The UMG music fire, mainstream adoption of urban and dance music and the Spotify/iTunes industry shift is creating a mass extinction event for rock music and bass within that.

Shorter less pretentious answer is boutique not fashionable - sell but at high price to recoup loss whilst Fender has the mojo at the moment so sell opportunistically at a high price. Any way, it's a buyers market for boutique basses...

Prog rock and math metal, post core and what have you are all very popular at the minute. Some of those particular basses have been for sale for months and get bumped up regularly.

Indeed but I find this sub-genre is quite gear specific - like gospel favouring MTB basses, Math metal seems to thrive on slant frets multi-string so Dingwall, Boden and Kiesel. All lovely basses but not old-world boutique...

That's because for a long time, the Basses For Sale folder has been populated by a lot of high-end sellers who likely make their living this way, and for whom the subscription fee makes sense.

Don't think I'm alone in thinking a separate folder for basses of £1000 & over might help to democratise the For Sale listings.
