Looking for a bass amp getting back into playing after a few years off. Anyone got any recommendations about the 500 pound mark. Combo would be best or do you get separates for 500?. I was looking at the Ashdowns which look pretty neat. Mainly because i seen JJ Burnel using one. I,m using a P-bass special if this helps

Hi there,

I would say that for under £500 you can't really beat the Ashdown MAG range and I think probably the C210-300 would be your best best if you like the JJ sound

Check the combo out here;

and best bit is you would still have enough change for one of these!

Ashdowns offer good power/cost ratio. Also some people are subjective about the "Ashdown " sound. I've used Ashdown Mag series stuff for five years and loved it. Still got an Ashdown rig, but keep it for rehearsals. What music are you playing? As i find it's best used in the rock genre.

Another alternative which is currently getting a lot of people excited is the Hartke LH500 - I think Coda are doing them for around £200 including shipping. Pair it up with something like this and you'd have a great set up.

Thanks for the plug for my cab guys :) I must admit, even if I do have an interest in selling my cab, a LH500 + the Seco 2x12 works out at £365 for a pretty decent 500w rig.

Thanks folks always had a hankering for hartke heard some great reports about them. The pedal looks cool but i use waves gtr3 and a laptop as my efx. Have you tried this amazing. Love the doubler and od especially with the p-bass sounds orgasmic. Although you do need a a decent usb soundcard with asio2. My dream setup would be Ampeg svt and 8x10 but it,s just to big for transporting. I am going to check out gear next week i,ll let you know what happens

Don't forget that by buying second hand you can get much better quality for the same price as new kit.

As an example, there's a David Eden Metro combo in the Amps and Effects For Sale section for £450, which is so much better than anything Ashdown make it just isn't funny!
