Shine are IMHO pants, best avoid!
Ah, the reviews of the Shine and the Harley Benton 6-er, which is the same bass, are generally OK for the money.

Oh well, if it is pants, I imagine I'll be able to get most of my money back again. Though, is there anything wrong with it that would make it unsuitable as a cheap "project" bass to do something with.

Given what I paid for it, the following reviews look to be quite good. Assuming this is the right model:
that pic on ebay makes it look like a 12 string! you can't go wrong at £60 tho' even if its a POS it'll mod into something better unless you're really unlucky
I was hoping to practice setup, including "fret work" (I'm not sure exactly what it entails) on it. I've been told that some people buy these 6'ers to set them up with low action and practice tapping on them. I hope I'll be able to do that.

It may well be great for tapping. Good luck and let us know.
I have to admit my "Shine are pants" was a sweeping generalisation (which I hate) I was just inferring in as few words as possible that they are Korean/Chinese factory made and tend to be knocked together from cheap parts. This is reflected in the RRP. Oriental build quality is getting better and better so who know there might be some good apples in their rotten barrel. LOL :)

Well, I can't justify spending the money for Made in USA or Germany basses, or boutique basses. So, pretty well anything I'm likely to get is going to be far east factory made. I have a made in Indonesia guitar, and a made in China bass already. Given my skill level (haha!) I'm sure the bass itself is not going to be the limiting factor.

Here's someone selling the five string version for over twice what I paid, not considering postage.

Here's the six for over twice what I paid including postage.

I used to have one of these, paid £120 for it new and sold it for £90 on ebay
Mine was a nicer dark cherry finish and had an extra pot (2xvol, bass, mid and treb)

It wasn't pants at all, although it wasn't by any means desirable. The pickups were much too loud and you had to roll them back to get a decent sound. The hardware was surprisingly decent, i remember the bridge in particular looked well made and chunky. It was a double truss rod neck and seemed like a "proper" 6er, tbh i was expecting to find all sorts of shortcomings when i got it home but it was pretty good

At this price you can't go wrong really! Sniff out some better pickups and it'd be a winner

EDIT: That Squier was a standard too! Someone got a bargain...
If the pickups are too loud, couldn't you just lower them?
There wasn't much scope for lowering them, they just had a stupidly high output anyways so don't think it would have made much of a difference. Played a shine guitar which was the same, nearly impossible to get a clean sound out of it with the volume anyway near full
