Is this a good guitar? Its damn expensive and looks like it has taken some damage. What is the year about? and is this a collectors item or a guitar you would play on...

Thanks, please dont flame me for being the new guy!

Leeroy,
You'll have to get used to calling them basses not guitars .. :)

There's a ton of stuff about Fender and the history of the company and basses on the web and in about 2000 books ...
You could start on this page from the same website

Hey leeroy, why not go on over to the Introduction part of this forum and tell us a bit about yourself :)

I'd say that this bass is around 2,400 Euros (£1900) too expensive. The year suggests that it's going to be heavy as hell, I assume it's all original (apart from the finish) as they haven't stated otherwise, although that is something to be very cautious of.
The fact that it's a refinish usually knocks about half from the 'fully original' price, but having said that i don't know what affect on the price the fact that it's left handed would have, could go either way. Fully original I'd say this is worth around 2,000 Euros (£1600), but with it's (badly relic'ed) refinish, I wouldn't wanna pay more than around 1,000 Euros (£800).

All these prices are subjective though

Wow - €3500. That's over £2700. I know the pound isn't doing well against the euro, but that an awful lot of cash for a refinished '75 Jazz.

I don't know where you're based Leeroy, but on UK ebay I might expect this to go for about £1500.

Edit: Yeah, what Sibob said! :)

Yes, the bass has been repainted, and the damage you see on it has been simulated as part of that process. Refinishing is a common practice, although knocks value off of 'vintage' basses such as this. Relic'ing is the practice of making something look aged and is becoming more and more common after Fender introduced it as an option on their 'Time Machine' series. The refinish here looks good enough but the Relic job is pretty poor.

Indeed - relicing (if there's such a word), sad cynical marketing ploy. You'd get a nice clean one of a similar age for a fraction of that money. AND... why do these people insist on taking them apart - to show what exactly?
Im sure, the price is over the top. Ive fallen for the colour tho, i need to find a J bass with that blue tone :)
ha ha 2 days in and the GAS has set in already

Leeeroy, you might like to have a look around the WIKI area of the site (look at the top of the screen, above the picture of the black bass ..)
There's a load of info for people starting out in there.

You can see the Fender colours on the Fender.com website. Fender make "re-issue" versions of basses in colours like that.
just have a prowl. You'll find something like it, and the colour names.

Have fun

So you can special order colours? Cool
ha ha you can do anything if you have enough money

That Mark Hoppas Fender is Daphne Blue. £500 from Thomann (big online/mail order music dealer in Germany)
Not really a jazz bass though, right handed only I suspect and fairly common on ebay so probably not that good....

So are you going to get a left or right handed bass?

Ok cool, i might get me or borrow a real cheap ass righty and have a go see how it feels before getting a better quality one.

Just a question, when playing bass do you ever bridge your fingers because i dislocated my ring finger at the end joint so it doesnt bend upwards. Its almost impossible to bridge 2 strings effectively.

But bass is more single string finger work right, not one finger holds down all strings because i cant do that at the moment, hopefully over time the joint will become more free but maybe not.

I chopped the ends off my middle and ring fingers left hand last October in a work accident and I have found a way round it over the last year... and yes I regulally use my little finger to "bridge" two strings you just have to find a way :) I had o play with just index and pinkie for 6 months, it's amazing what you can do if the drive is there

PS for those of you that are wondering, they did sew them back on but they don't feel like they used to lol
