Tinnitus advice please

Recommended Posts

All good advice but you'd be crazy to put this above going to see a doctor/audiologist. You have no idea what the ultimate cause of this is and neither do any of us really.

This is from Wickipedia

I suffer from intermittent tinnitus in my left ear (being left handed the drummer's always on my left) I use ACS moulded ear plugs but it's still definitely worse after a 2 hour gig then over the next couple of days calms down again, for those that have not seen it this is the best online test I've found for hearing loss

I find that the kind of high frequencies from ride cymbals causes a "spike" in my tinnitus. I now where ear plugs that are more heavy duty and reusable compared to the single use yellow foam ones. They definitely help. A friend also has the two part goo for making moulded ear plugs, I'll find out where he got it from because it was a fraction of the price of the branded kits.

This is a timely thread. I developed tinnitus around September last year - I may have had a milder form earlier than that as I would occasionally hear the dreaded shriek I have now but it never lasted long. Since my nasty bout of sinusitis and rhinitis in September it's been constant.

I was at a 3 month checkup yesterday and I'm glad to say the sinuses are much better, but the tinnitus may be here to stay. I was concerned about how bad my hearing had become so the consultant had it tested yesterday. Sure enough there's a MAJOR drop off just above 2khz with the right ear a little worse than the left at higher frequencies, but the tinnitus is loud and clear in both ears at a significantly higher frequency than 2khz.

Having said all that I've found the tinnitus easier to manage than I first expected. For a few weeks it literally was driving me round the bend. Irritable would hardly describe it. My wife asked me quite seriously if I'd thought about doing something stupid... But I've found that background noise helps me ignore it - it's always there, but it can be ignored like you ignore any other constant noise. The wife's snoring is therefore proving very useful at night, ahem...

Yes please. I might even be able to take my own impressions and make some DIY dentures by up-cycling teeth from local road kill. Anyone fancy running over Tom Cruise for me?

Seriously though, yes please.

I've got mild tinnitus that I'm often not aware of unless there is almost silence. When I had a hearing test last year it showed no loss, thankfully. These days I never rehearse or gig withour my ACS ear protection. Not cheap but you can't put a price on your hearing. I used to use cheaper plugs like Alpine, which were ok but muffled everything too much.
