I hate the way he infers that he's not a trader & that they're all his personal basses. There's nothing wrong with being a trader just be upfront about it. His stuff is always well overpriced & a lot of it has some kind of issue. I wouldn't touch any of his stuff with a barge pole.
I thought exactly the same thing, though anyone looking at his feedback should realise that he sells a few to many basses to just have them for personal use.

I don't think he's particularly overpriced though. He seems to sell a lot of stuff on it's first listing, which suggests he's actually selling a reasonable market price. The fact that he's picked it up from the 'bay much cheaper and relisted it just shows the power of cleaning up a bass and giving it a decent listing. Something Jon would probably attest to. :)

Hell yeah - I wouldn't deny it for an instant.

However a good part of what I do aside from buyin' & sellin' is renovation & refurbishment - and I absolutely love pulling some horrific old relic apart, finding out what makes it tick, and doing my best to get it back to the way it used to be 35 years earlier. I'm currently pretty close to finishing some light cleaning & buffing to this (excuse guitar content):

And I have to say I'm quite happy with how it's looking now - pics to follow if anyone cares. This will go back on Ebay (probably) when it's done - I doubt the original seller would recognise it, and any profit I make won't reflect the hours & hours I've spent on it.

I really wouldn't feel happy about picking something up & just trying to flip it the next week for a lot more than I paid - I'd at least wait until the listing I bought it from had expired!

And fair play to you, it's good to see someone saving old abused guitars & basses. I'd like to see more pics!!

Nowt that exotic - just a pretty 3-piece sen ash (presumably) front. Looks a lot like a real L6S. That DiMarzio Super Distortion was a nice bonus too. :)

Yeah, sorry Jon. I wasn't trying to put you into the same bracket as Mr Digits as I know that your purchases are a labour of love and you buy what interests you rather than something you could just turn a profit on.

Is that a copy of an L6 you've got there? I didn't think it was in the Gibson catalogue long enough for anyone to copy!

Indeed it is an L6S - mine's a Kimbara brand, which, if other Kimbara electrics are anything to go on means it's probably a Matsumoku. You'd be surprised though - there are L6 copies from most major JapCrap brands in various different flavours, some of them frighteningly accurate, right down to the weird Bill Lawrence electronics. Only one pup left from the originals of this one & no fancy circuitry, so I'll be wiring it with a 3-way rotary switch basically working like an LP. At least it'll look right!

And no need to apologise - I'm not averse to making a quick quid or two when the chance arises - finding an MIJ Squier Precision for £25 was amazing, but well - I didn't need it... :)

I'll give you £50 for it. Posted.

Well, if you insist:

Just flung it together this evening, no strings, not wired it up yet - but I'm quite pleased with this, so far. Hope it doesn't play like a pig!

Anyway - back to Rickenbuggery!

WOW! What a difference!

I had access to one of these, in the late '70's. From memory, a really nice guitar.
Don't think they really caught on at the time - not easy to do the rotary selection "on the fly"

Perhaps you ought to go into cosmetic surgury :) What a result!!

Wow! That's a fantastic job! How did you get the chromeware to come up as good as that?

I seem to remember that Columbus did a copy of these too.

Cheers gents - really just elbow-grease to get the chrome (and the rest of it) shiny, assisted by lashings of T-Cut on the more stubborn regions - like the entire body!

On the whole I've found JapCrap chrome to be very good quality & hard-wearing, particularly on alloy components so like this, on most of the instruments I've dealt with it's just been dirty. The pup in the neck position is a parts-box replacement, just a bog-standard humbucker with a parts-box chrome cover stuck on it. Had them both for about 5 years - it pays to never throw anything away! :) The bridge position is the original from the neck in the "before" pic - it just sits better in the bridge route & I doubt it will make much odds sound-wise.

Speaking of which - I don't have the faintest idea how to wire a rotary switch to do the same thing as a 3-way toggle - so until I can find out I think I'll have to wire it like a Jazz (2xV, 1xT) so at least I can find out what it sounds like!

Possibly a Shaftesbury the seller says. I wouldn't know, but I'm looking forward to seeing if Jon and others can identify what it is from a not very good description and a small photo.

Could be a Shafty, could even be a Cimar like yours. There are quite a few of these neck-through Fireglo copies knocking about under various names (seen 'em as CMI as well) and the maker or makers are as yet unidentified - my Fireglo Frankenbugger started life as one of these.

This one's had new tuners & Seymour Dunk pickups (bridge pup at least) fitted, presumably recently, it seems a bit strange that the seller doesn't mention them - or perhaps doesn't realise. Odd.

*EDIT* Just realised they're saying it's got twin rods - that points to Matsumoku or possibly an Italian-made Gherson. Never seen a 2-rod Shafty, but that doesn't mean they don't exist...

Still with the pretending he is not a dealer. This is why I didn't make an offer on it. Reeks of dishonest.
