Little or no sound coming from bass

Recommended Posts

Wish I didn't have to start this topic :(

Just acquired a bass from the Bay and when plugged into an amp I need to crank the volume near enough full on my amp to get noise from the bass and not alot of noise at that.

Any possible reasons why this might be?

Thanks in advance,

Alex

Jack is tight.

Passive bass as far as I can see.

Pickup is nice and close to the strings.

Amp is perfectly fine.

Lead is fine too. (tried two leads)

Have you checked the pots and wiring? Try cleaning up the jacket socket in case there's oxidation on the contacts. Clean the pots too. If all the wiring looks sound then unfortunately the pickup might be the problem (the poles might have lost a lot of strength or there could be a short in the windings).

*Update*

Right cleaned pots as best I could just now. All assembled back together. Now getting noise!

However I need the volume to be at a specific position to get the full bhoona the rest is dead.

Going to give it a proper clean at the weekend hopefully :)

For ther benefit of anyone who's not seen a P copy like this before, it's a 1976 (according to pickup code) Hohner, made in Japan by Moridaira. The 8-pole pickup is a Maxon, and is single-coil despite the double rows of poles.

I'm really pleased that the problem's turned out to be the pots, because working examples of these pickups are really hard to find these days. As I type this, I'm looking at two dead ones out of a 1972 Jazz copy, which are sitting on my desk being useless!

Jon.
