Help with 'Valerie' bassline?
With due respect to my esteemed colleagues who have uploaded transcriptions, the rhythmic structure of the bass line is a 3/2 Latin clave diminished to one bar. So each bar is based on:
dotted quaver, dotted quaver, crotchet, quaver, crotchet

Then there are embellishments on top of that (rests and extra notes) but that's more down to feeling it at the time, I would argue. I would wait and see what the drummer is up to before adding too much of that.

Lincoln Goines and Robby Ameen have put together a great book called "Funkifying the Clave" about the mechanics of afro-cuban rhythms, including how they influence rock and pop. You don't have to work your way through the book to play Valerie tonight but it's a good one to add to the collection and it is very relevant here so I couldn't resist a little plug :)
Yep that is a great Book and a must...... I have the first edition complete with Cassette tape...

My chart reference was to 'OTPJ', and that it was in 4/4.
It has a heavy snare back beat on 2 and 4 so being a pop/soul tune was in 4/4.
4 Stick counts at start , but of course that could be read as 'One two.two two'
Then making it.......................

I think you might be over complicating a p**s easy pop tune , sung by a raving
Drug ridden, Gin sodden old looking trout [ who sings great when she is sober.. ]
Hi Garry, I think you're right there. It does vary a little in places. I was mainly going for the bones of the piece so that Mewsie could get through it for her audition. Not bad for a 30 minute takedown, though :)
I hate to tell you this, but in bar 4 you've flatted the flats...
I think there was some spat many years ago between Bon Jovi & Belinda Carlisle. They both produced songs with the same bassline and one tried to sue the other. It was thrown out though, as it was purely coincidental.
Livin On A Prayer and Heaven Is A Place On Earth! I like it when we play those two next to each other in the set, means my brain can switch off :)

As for the chart idea, I think it would be awesmoe if we can do it. I have worked out Wake Me Up Before You Go Go and then compared it to some tabs online and the tabs are NOTHING like what I figured out... Thesedays I do a far more simplified version anyway, no-one needs bass histrionics at their wedding!

Sometimes we go in to Town called malice out of Valerie. Not quite the same rhythm but it works (we do Valerie in D so that helps).

When i first joint my covers band i had to learn a lot of songs quickly. Its only recently i have been going back over some of these songs and realising how different my lines are to the original.
It doesn't have to be exact (and never is) but it gives me something to do.

Indeed. I think I can count on one finger the number of songs I do (almost) exactly, and that's Livin on a Prayer. Everything else is my interpretation or arrangement or completely different line for a different feel.

When we eventually decide to do Valerie, as I'm sure we will, I will have to stop myself nicking your idea :)

Funny enough Livin on a Prayer is also one of the only few i do note for note.

We even did The Final countdown in to Livin once. great laugh (for us anyway).

It does seem to be a bit strange but it looks nice and the demo track all seemed to work.
I cant believe there is another band still doing I believe in a thing called love still. thought we were the only ones ;-)

Well done, Mewsie!

Thanks for posting the charts, guys. This popped up on the same day I was asked to learn it by my band; looks like this is the next Mustang Sally! :)

I think even the singer from the Zutons has said he doesnt look on it as a Zutons song any more.
