I'm giving it a try here, please bear with me :-)

Up for grabs is an astounding 1985 Washburn model B-62 Double Neck Bass fretted/fretless as seen in the original Washburn 1984 price guide for $1499 plus case.
It seems only 423 of those were made between 84 and 85. Washburn apparently has no information more than this on record.

Washburn was on a roll in '85. Artists using them at that time included Bob Dylan, Roger Waters, David Gilmore, Chicago, Heart,Rudy Sarzo ... this was a flagship product from a guitar company in their prime years, and it shows.
You can see it in the "Is This Love" video of Whitesnake.

DESCRIPTION
This is very solid bass to hold and play. These were made from maple neck with alder wings and body; which makes wearing this bass a lot more balanced and comfortable then something this outrageous should be. It weighs 5.5kg.

The final finish is a plasticky black paint somewhere that strikes a good balance between grip, depth and reflectance.

Tuners are incredibly accurate and easy to handle.

SOUND
Clean, big, and compressed. Stable in volume and tone, deep and tight. Passive electronics on both necks.

This string system uses normal strings. This is a great feature since you can use any string you like to really make this yours and you're not looking for double-ball strings all the time.

Each neck has an on/off switch, when both are off it is silent, and you can have both necks on and play over yourself (e.g., ring a harmonic on one and play the other) without messing with your normal one-neck-on levels. But in that case be careful of resonnance of the wood. Or play with another guy on the two necks and make a show when you're live. :-)

COSMETICS
This bass was used but not abused. Some minor dings and scatches but for a 30-year old instrument it's in really good shape. Sold with the special case as pictured.

Controls are Volume Volume Tone.

Four strap buttons in order to find a comfy way to play.

Asking price is [s]900€[/s] 800€/650GBP, seem fair according to the triangle Rarity/Cosmetic State/Other sales I've seen :-).

Trades welcome as long as it's a Dolphin Pro2 or Buzzard BO.
Trades plus cash possible against Dolphin Pro1 or Buzzard NT :-)

Have no idea of shipping cost.
Located in Northern France near Belgian Border, 2 hours drive from Paris, 3.5hrs from Amsterdam, 35mn from Lille if you're on the train from London :-)

I purchased one of these from the Bass centre in Wapping, must have been around 85/86?
Mine had the fretted neck above the fretless. It was a great sounding bass with lots of sustain.
I seem to remember Frank Itt playing one back in the day.
I may still have a Guitarist mag review of one of these, I'll see if I can dig it out for you.

Very tempted in a strange and nostalgic sort of way!!

I heard that Fretted neck above the fretless are one of a kind, And it's the only other one I saw in the US awhile back. Maybe a prototype ?

If you find the review, I'll be delighted !
Even the guys from Washburn do not have the info on this model...

And... yes, be tempted. I'm open to discussions ;-)

Yes, exactly. It's Vol/Vol/Tone, and the swith is ON/OFF.
I usually have two settings : all full blast for a godd rocking tone, or Bridge PU on 50%, tone to 75% to get a rounder, thumpier bluesy tone.

Please note that the fretted neck is currently strung with Piccolo Bass Strings (as seen in the pictures). The strings on the Fretless neck are Flatwounds.
I can of course throw in two sets of Roundwounds if needed.

So, so glad the fretless neck isn't lined - I'd end up in desperate financial trouble if it was - twin-neck prog heaven!

Washburns from this era were extraordinarily high-quality, this was probably made by Matsumoku, although it's possible Yamaki were still building some Washburn models around '84/'85. I've seen a couple of these come up over the years, but it's an incredibly rare bass. Good luck with the sale!

Jon.

Hi Henry
I've been looking for one of these for a while now. I just missed one in the USA for much lesser than yours though. Although getting around buying yours is gonna be rather tough. I'm in India touring the US at the moment but I have family in Amsterdam and London. How do you propose we do this. Pls email [email protected] or pm me and lets talk. Would love to get this guitar.

If you don't mind could you kindly describe the sound out of this baby.. Thanks Henry

Ps I've joined basschat just now after seeing this ad.
Regards
Adrian

By popular request :-), I added some new pics in the Picasa Album. Focussing mainly ont the marks and dings, but also showing the string spacing at the 12th and 24th fret.
I'm also throwing in a Bass Stand (collapsible/Pliable ?) that fits this bass.
I also recorded a small soundclip with Garage Band, directly with no effects. FIrst is the Fretless, then the Piccolo (well, you'll figure taht out I guess :-) )
It shows my lack of playing, but alos the sound of the bass. I fiddled around with the controls/volume.

Good stuff. The fretless was nice maybe I prefer Round wounds. I like the brightness of the fretted side with the piccolo strings. Sounded like a lead guitar. Emailed you Henry. Want this one. Just gonna have to work it out, pls keep me in the loops through pm/email .. Thanks man

Adrian
