TRBboy Posted August 22, 2013 Share Posted August 22, 2013 (edited) Hey folks, This may well be a very stupid question, but I thought it was worth putting out there just in case. Basically, I really love a lot of the bass playing on contemporary Gospel tracks, I love the groove, the feel, the techniques and level of musicality, and generally the sound that most of the Gospel guys go for. The thing is, I'm not really religious and I don't actually like a large proportion of the songs, as songs in their own right. I just really love the bass playing! This is sounding more complicated than it was supposed to now...... It just struck me that there MUST be some non-Gospel music out there that has very similar bass playing on. Maybe some R&B or something? Anyway, if anyone has any suggestions that might fit the brief, please let me know! Thanks for your help! P.S. Len_derby Posted August 22, 2013 Share Posted August 22, 2013 I fully respect your standpoint on your religious beliefs, that's your business and no one else's But, as a church-goer and a player in a gospel band I think you're going to struggle to find secular music of a similar kind with the same passion. God-free Gospel is like alcohol-free beer. I'd be very happy to be proved wrong though, and I'm looking forward to hearing some bass-chatter suggestions. wateroftyne Posted August 22, 2013 Share Posted August 22, 2013 Gospel is a thread that runs though so much music. I'm not keen on the shiny over-produced stuff - I like it with a bit of grit. Try the Staples Singers and Mavis Staples. Mavis' Hope at the Hideout live CD is fantastic. Aretha's gospel stuff is incredible. Listen to that live recording of The Old Landmark. [/quote] Lol, I think this might be the problem! I'm looking for gospel bass playing "out of context" as it were! Some great suggestions so far guys, but I guess I was thinking a little more contemporary really. His debut Brown Sugar is pretty dope too, highlights are: Brown Sugar, sh*t Damn Mutherf***er (sometimes written as SDM) and Lady Also, it's Spanky on geetar. Ironically it's usually the big hip hop guys that like to use the best of modern gospel players on their music. Mike Elizondo on bass for example on a lot of Dr. Dre's stuff, also his producer for a while. Take a listen to Erykah Badu and (already noted) D'Angelo.
