Water-cured Redwood tops are not available anymore, but of exceptional aesthetical and tonal quality. The story behind the "water-cured" was told on the Spector site: Spector went to the rosewood forests of Northern California to find this particular tonewood, where they excavated giant rosewood stumps from trees that had been cut down over 100 years ago, and were submerged by a river for the remainder of that time until collected by Spector. What does this kind of century-long river bank and muck immersion do to rosewood burl? Spector describes it thusly:

The flow of the river water for such an extended period deposited minerals that have hardened the wood and deepened the color to a rich chocolate brown. In addition to this all the sugars have been washed out of the wood enabling drying to be done in the same fashion as the traditional preparation of violin woods.

Thanks everybody :)

The pics do not justice the real top. It has a wonderful 3-dimensional pattern ...

The sound is unbelievable clear, deep and responsive to my fingers, yet organic. Unfortunately the 17mm string spacing is too tight for my fingers - so it gets much too less played ... .
