Hello Basschat,

Hope you're all well & sorry it has taken me so long -ummmm, literally years in fact, I am *so* ashamed- to properly introduce myself. I must be one of the most avid 'lurkers' on basschat!!!

I've been living in Sussex for the last 3 years or so but am moving, tomorrow, in fact...to Maidstone in Kent. Mainly this is for better access to London and quicker motorway access for the rest of the country (I share a flat with my drummer).

I won't give the full life story, but briefly..I'm a 26yr old audio engineer and musician...23 years of playing violin (something I still gig with - frequently it's a 5str viola now)...and, I think, about 6 years now playing bass guitar which has become my first love!

I have quite a few basses, all cheap and cheerful, but well set up. Very happy to talk gear as I have in PM to many of you, both asking and advising. I'll try to get my act together and post a bit more as and when I have anything worth saying ;)

Moving house has given me a kick up the pants to say hi here as it would be ace to make some additional musical/work connections in and around Kent, social connections to fellow bassists are always good...and also I'm going to try and have a really thorough sort through some of my gear and may well be up for selling/trading quite a bit of stuff (some bass related, but mainly some bits of PA etc in fact...I have quite a large stock, some of which might be available quite cheaply).

Anyhow, it'd be lovely to hear from some of you...I've tried to make it to a couple of bassdays etc and work always seems to get in the way, but it'll happen at some point...!

Cheers

Tom

Hiya chaps..sorry for the delay replying

Am sitting in the front of my transit, waiting for floor paint in the new garage to dry so we can unload first of many van loads of gear etc..!!

Anyway, the viola seems to have piqued some interest, so here's some answers

Most violins are (from low to high, in 5ths): GDAE. Violas are 'one string lower' (or each string is a 5th lower if you want to think like that): CGDA. Cellos fyi are an 8ve lower than a viola, so still: CGDA.

Anything other than the above is arguably 'non standard' in the classical string family. Most '5 string fiddles' (most often electric) are violin scale length but encompass the extra low string of a viola: CGDAE My 5str is a little more unusual in that it's viola scale length, but has the extra high string of a violin (so again, CGDAE).

Hope this helps, thanks for the interest!! I will organise pics sometime :)

Please do talk bass with me also!!!

Cheers,

Tom

Haha, well.......!

Am proud to say I bought the Ibanez from BCer Faithless (who sent it over from Lithuania)..he had been using it in high C tuning, which was interesting, but I had BC's very own Mark Daniels give it a lovely setup and restring to play in low B tuning, sounds great!!

;)
