It doesn't say Squier on the headstock and the serial number isn't one I can find on the Fender dating database - it looks like D180766 to me.

Any ideas whether this is a bargain or one to stay well clear of?

Thanks for any help.

Cheers - Nick

Guitardaterproject.org says that serial D180766 is a 1982 USA Fullerton Jazz Bass, so I reckon it's one of the con Fender Decals on a could be anything neck. It looks a decent enough bass but not £170's worth. At least he's not claiming it's a USA Fender

Well what do you know? Another '82 Jazz? I don't think so :(

That really takes the star prize for stupid  2 dodgy basses listed both with the same serial number & decal!

It's an Obvious squier and the seller admits it in the title. He sells loads of these pimped up squiers. It looks to me like he does a pretty decent job as well. I've contacted him about other guitars before and he makes no bones of the fact they are modded. I think he's above board.

How can what he's doing be "above board"? He's selling basses with fake decals & serial numbers, I know he's not the only one but the fact that he doesn't claim they're not Fenders don't make it any more right!

You only have to look at this guy's feedback - 'view item' - & count up how many he's sold with the same serial number :o
http://feedback.ebay...eedbackAsSeller

It also appears that he's sold *something* using the same photo's many times over!

I would be very surprised if a single contributor to this sight hasnt at some stage owned a decal job squier. It's widely accepted as the norm. It clearly says squier in the title I really don't see what's the problem is. He is selling a squier guitar and he says it's a squier. What more can he do.

I don't get it.

He seems to buy them up off the bay for anything under £100, tarts them up into "Fenders" and then puts them back on the bay as Squiers but "not Fenders" for a little bit more than what he paid for them gross. Putting the ethics aside for one moment... he's making hardly any money out of it.

The only thing I can think of is, he's a money laundering bass player on a one man mission to reduce the number of genuine Squiers in the world.

edit : damn you predictive text!

Are you a cop? Not everyone can afford a gold jazz, also it's very few people can pimp a squier to make it look like something they aspire to own. This guy fills a gap in the market. I've done the maths on a few of his conversions and he isn't making any money here, and youd be hard pushed to mod the squier any cheaper yourself.
What planet am I from? Really? Come on now let's not loose the run of ourselves here.

So why don't you comment on the threads on the main bits of the forum where members build basses for other people using Fender logos?
Completely different scenario, show me one of the basses you're talking about - with duplicated serial numbers & being offered on ebay as something they're not, let alone using the same photo's & description to sell 'the same bass' several times over!

As for using the same picture. Do you get the bass you see pictured on the Shops website?
Nah, can't agree with this at all, pics should be of the bass for sale, laziness is no excuse, I would want to see what I am expected to pay for, especially when you know it's been modded. At the very very least it should state that the bass isn't the one pictures if that's the case.

That's not what he's doing, I think you are the one who "really doesn't understand". The guy is modding guitars and flogging them. It's no big deal. He's not pretending they are anything else other than squiers with mods. He's not selling the same guitar over and over again, they are all different. I really don't know what your problem is. These guitars are nice. He does a good job. More power to him.

Would you expect Thomanns to show you the EXACT bass going into the fictional Shopping basket.

As long as he is not representing them like using a picture of a good one and selling something that looks like it's been through a cement mixer. wheres the harm in using pictures of an identical bass. Lets face it how many of us could tell the difference between one unmarked Affinity and another?
There's a big market for the cement mixer look. :)

I don't care what he's doing with these Squiers per se but he isn't exactly squeaky clean folks ... I've spotted a bit of nefarious selling/buying activity - namely a size 10 lady with a penchant for spray tan and hair extensions who likes to buy Squire basses off him every now and then (two in one day once) and leave glowing feedback....

... Maybe she puts Squier decals on them and sells them back to ebay. :D

Gear porn, precision Discreets bass made by the Bass Doc.

I don't see a duplicate serial number?

So your problem is not that they have the badge it's that they have the badge (A fake serial obviously) and being sold even though they aren't being sold as fenders but the seller says Squier?

It's not my problem I was replying to the OP of this thread initially & trying to offer some advice.

Where is the difference in this guy putting a fender label on a squier and selling it and the bass doc putting a Fender label on a bass he's built to sell to discreet?

Because Discreet asked for a logo as his custom made bass is made to represent the best (in his personal opinion) of the features of Fenders through the decades, it's what he wants, it's not something he's buying which is a fake that has to be said is being sold to dupe people. If not the first person that buys it but very likely some poor unsuspecting buyer somewhere down the line.

If anything the Squier is a Fender after all.

I'm not convinced that the majority of basses he sells 'described as Squier's even' are actually made by Fender or Squier, the numbers don't add up for a start. The heads & in particular the surround of the Truss rod adjuster don't look Squier to me.

As for using the same picture. Do you get the bass you see pictured on the Shops website?

Every bass I've ever bought has been the one advertised, I wouldn't have it any other way, even basses I've bought direct from USA.
My original reply to this thread was made with the intention to notify the OP of the probable dubious nature of the bass in question but looking a little deeper I seem to have opened a can of worms.
