#Even Fender call them Fender Squiers do they not.
Nope - they call them Squier by Fender.
Squier is a "Fender" the same way Epiphone is "Gibson" Whereas Armani and Matalan have no connection.
An Epiphone isn't a Gibson, so a Squier isn't a Fender.

By that line of thinking a DeArmond would also be a Fender, as would an SWR.

Personally I think if someone wants to stick a Fender decal (or anything else) on a Squier they have their reasons, and despite whatever anyone else thinks about it fair play to them. Unless of course they end up trying to defraud someone - not something the Ebay seller is trying to do.

Doubtless we'll be seeing some of these pop up on this forum at later dates though. <_<

So they are Fender Squiers then. They are BY Fender making them Fender. Not Squiers by Well Hung m***e guitar company Ltd.

They are even on Fenders own website.
Yep they're on Fenders website. Under "Squier by Fender".

Strictly speaking I suppose it should be Squier by FMIC, the company that owns both the Fender and Squier brands. But that wouldn't be so catchy. :)

Nowhere on the site (aside from posts in the forums) does it mention 'Fender Squires', only 'Squier by Fender'. It seems to me that FMIC do their best to distinguish between the brands, a distinction that's not lost on people who want to change the decal on Squiers.

Splitting my hairy beanbag more like. :D They are not Fenders. They are Squiers.
The Ford escort analogy doesn't work man. Squire by Fender doesn't equate to Escort by Ford ... if it did what would the automotive equivalent to a MIM J bass be ... Ford other Ford by Ford?

I think it would be insulting to everyone's intelligence to deny any connection between the two ... but that connection is based purely on economics. Franchise and outsource then afilliate in order to capture the bottom end of the market and also potentially cultivate sales by virtue of upgrading.

So in other words made by Fender in the hope that people buy the version with the badge.

Which finally brings us back to the point in question, sort of

It doesn't say Squier on the headstock and the serial number isn't one I can find on the Fender dating database - it looks like D180766 to me.

Any ideas whether this is a bargain or one to stay well clear of?

Thanks for any help.

Cheers - Nick

This was the original question, then some paranoid lunatic got it in his head that there was a master scammer on the lose and wanted to call the cops or tell the teacher until he finally got the picture but at this stage he couldn't back down in fear of losing face so the subject kept changing to suit his stance.

Then other dudes got involved depending on what was happening and the original point got lost Along the way.

So I think a fair answer to the original post is--
If you think this is an original fender misadvertised as a squier by mistake for some reason and you think it is a bargain to be had, then don't buy it.

However if you think this is a squier with mods and you are into that type of thing, then it's probably not the best value guitar out there but it definitely not a bad buy.

So in short this is a modified squier not an original fender. Now that you have all the info please feel free to proceed how you desire and if anyone here wants to judge you that's their problem.

I personally feel that a good quality squier should wear the fender badge with pride. Amen.

I am always chilled out thanks, it's not leg pulling when you stoop to using that sort of insult towards anybody. Instead of me chilling I would suggest that you withdraw your remarks & offer an apology. Even on a internet forum there is a line between derogatory name calling & 'leg pulling', which I feel you have overstepped.

If you really don't understand my comment, it's because you don't seem to understand that what the seller in question seems to be doing - adding logos to basses (at least) & selling them as something they are not, is illegal, not good for the industry & not good for the 'straight' guitar buying public.

The JV in this post seems to be a Fender Squier I'd say :) http://basschat.co.uk/topic/176157-jv-p-how-much-maybe-i-should-put-mine-up/page__fromsearch__1

But even in this thread you only seem to have a problem when it is some one on Ebay doing it.
No I don't "only seem to have a problem when it is some one on Ebay doing it" I would not have a problem if he wasn't committing fraud.
....To me this is no different than someone selling a 1.1 with a GTi kit and saying this is a 1.1l with a GTi kit.
I agree 100%.
But the bigger picture is that some of these basses will be sold on as fenders and undoubtedly some of them will end up on here and people will get ripped off... maybe even mates of ours. Of course legally the ebay dude has no recourse to this. And maybe the mugs that buy them deserve what they get - I'm convinced that half the people that rave about their latest Fender purchase wouldn't be able to tell the difference while the rose tinteds are on anyway.
What Howard did for Discreet is basically just a one off (something to turn a blind eye to) and not a production line like this ebay guy. I have nothing against what ebay dude is doing as it is a free market but I have reservations as to why... and obviously the potential repercussions for us.

...So if you are going to criticise one person you have to criticise them all. which seemed to be lost on Kiogon. You CANNOT differentiate between one person doing it and another....
I think you can.
It's like the difference between someone having the occasional puff of herbal and dealing smack. You'd have them both locked up in irons because you can't differentiate between them. :D

Hang on, are you saying you had a Fender labelled bass that wasn't a Fender? ..... Ooh methinks he doth protest too much.

If Howard built Discreet's bass (I've never heard of it until now) then it's probably better than a fecking fender in the first place so they will be getting themselves a fecking bargain. :P

Ebay dude is making a bob... quite literally... that's why I don't understand why he's bothering. He'd make it worth his while by saying they were Fenders and charging appropriately - but he's not.
