Bump with a reminder that this is FS on BassChat only if there are no bids on eBay (auction ends Friday, 41 watchers and two PMs saying they want to bid, one indicating he only bids in the last few minutes). However, I really would wish this to go to a BCer!

Hi Clarky,
I didn't see the notification (so your PM) yesterday evening, i should buy a smartphone with a real screen... Or a pair of eyes...

Last night, i spent time on several sites and the Wal database. Now i know why this Bass, having a Pro Bass serial number PB1857, doesn't have a Pro Bass headstock (larger size and different shape). This Mk1 has a Custom Series look (golden hardware, new headstock) because it was done around 1982, 1983, 1984.
The best know example is the beautiful Mick Karn's Mk1 which has a earlier PB serial number (PB1757)but was done in 1982. So it has a Custom series Look.

To have a sharper idea, Clarky could you unscrew and take a picture of the back of the neck ? Ian and Pete used to write the date.

I answer your PM, Clarky.

This bass is a very early Mk1. So kind of a transitional model. So that is why it has a PB serial number. There are some other Wals which also have that. Nothing strange.
What date is written inside the cavity?

Hi, I will take a picture of the back of the neck tonight if it helps ... and if it doesn't stop me watching the Barcelona v Chelsea match! Cheers Clarky

According to this Wal history the last 'Pro' bass was PB1859, by which stage the bass was the Mk 1 in all but name http://www.trevorand...k/history2.html

Thus my bass (PB1857) was the third-to-last manufactured Pro bass and can be considered a transition model due to the Mk 1 electronics, headstock etc

In answer to question about posting to mainland Europe, I will do this for £75 insured. That is my best guess as to how much it would be, based on the c.£60 cost of sending a couple of basses to Italy and Finland last year, neither of which were insured.

If it costs more then its my loss. If it costs less I will refund the difference via paypal. Sound fair?

Further pics - foil is copper (which is why it looks brown!), no date on neck (do Wal date necks as I don't recall my last one having a date stamp on the neck either?)

All i can say is my bass is older than those two examples and does not have a date stamp. The previous owner before me (BC'er sselterf) dated it as 1981 and based on the serial number (PB1857) that seems right to me (PB1840 and PB1859 the last PB built, two after mine, were both listed as 1981 in the Wal database)

Oh well, 52 watchers and not one bid by the auction close (despite one guy telling me he would definitely bid in the last few minutes and an earnest guy from Belgium providing his phone number, contact details etc and clearing it with me that he could pay by bank transfer instead of paypal). Ho hum!

Not all Wal basses have dates written on the neck. I guess it would be 50%. Most have the date written in the cavity plate. But there is absolutely no reason to believe that this bass isn't from '81. And to be honest it doesn't really matter as long as it isn't a Fender. Wal basses are solid over all years. So it doesn't really matter from which date it is.
It isn't the best time to sell expensive instruments but just be patient
